Nearly every hit was a "soft" hit. The one real hit I got probably did the job.

Playing the Japanese once, I did have fun with them.

Somehow my carriers missed their oilers, so I'm trying to straighten that out.

His carriers are parked one hex east of Marcus. Search planes working well, I guess. Maybe not next turn but we'll probably fight for sure the turn after if he doesn't run.

Two VMFs and one VSB are departing San Francisco for Pearl. My land based naval air is in good shape.

My carriers are tanked up. My jeep carriers rendezvoused with the main groups and they're headed to Marcus together. His carrier are still parked off Marcus. I'm surprised no long range raids have already flown. The jeeps will add a ton of air cover to my regular forces. The fight should happen next turn. I'm looking forward to getting it over with.

Both my plane carrying groups will reach Eniwetok next turn. Need to get planes offloaded and them sent back.

Mississippi ate three sub torps and went down. I'm rushing two DDs I had clearing Eniwetok to them. Revenge can only make 1 kt while Price of Wales can make 6. Not sure of their survival.

Taking stock of my carrier situation. I'll have 3 Essex ships and 3 Independence CVLs arrive by July while Victorious will arrive in a month. If I lose badly, my next invasion will wait until then. I'm hoping I at least break even, though I feel good about stopping his attacks right now. The bonus with sticking a BB with each carrier group is that the Japanese can't resist taking shots at them either, sparing the carriers.

The 9th Australian Division has arrived in Karachi. Sending them south. I'm doing my best to invasion-proof the coast of India, though I think that moment has probably passed. Another base force is enroute form Aden to Colombo. I've done nothing to firm up that island yet, and now I'm getting enough base forces to do it. Troop transports are very sketchy in India right now, like Australia. I'm pretty much stuck to only one operation at a time with them.

Hornet is now only 2 days away from Pearl, so she's good.

Lots of LCIs and LSTs continue to show up. Plenty of good combat transport will be available for the next invasion.

Hornet reaches Pearl. 53 days in drydock, so that's not too bad.

Wasp eats a sub torpedo. Damage is on a similar level to Hornet's. Strange she didn't separate from the task force. I thought I was threading the gap in his subs, but I must have missed. My carriers are headed just west of Marcus where his subs probably aren't. I'm dog-legging Wasp to the SW before heading to Pearl, so she'll probably be safe.

Prince of Wales also eats a death torpedo, leaving the infinitely slow Revenge to try and make it back. Two more destroyers are moving to help escort.

KB has vanished. I noticed my searches from Marcus left a gap around 270 degrees, so hopefully they're that ways. I'm not searching east of the island, so I'm hoping he didn't go that way. He's not within Dauntless range, anyway. I'm down to four carriers plus the CVEs. Transports are headed to Marcus to finish their job.

Planes are unloading finally at Eniwetok. Bettys tried to bomb them from afar, but I have CAP up now.

This game is nuts...

Been fairly quiet, hence the less frequent updates. Stuff's unloading at Marcus, Wake and Eniwetok. All the planes are ashore at Eniwetok. I've sent one F4F and one SBD to Marcus.

Wasp and her two destroyers encountered three IJN DDs near Wake. Everyone withdrew and no shots were fired. I don't know why my bombers there didn't pounce on them, being within range.

There's about 6 subs lurking at Marcus, so I've been keeping my carriers moving around. The Air ASW does a good job of spotting them, but I think they aren't historically good at attacking them.

I make a point to remind my opponent that I have heavy bombers. Two different strikes went out today.

The Battle of Marcus Island.

Our carriers finally clashed. Unfortunately, not the decisive battle I was looking for. His planes mostly went after the CVEs, which suited me fine. All but two of them died. One may get away, but the last one is probably toast. If Hornet and Wasp had been present, I probably could have done better. As it is, both of us have taken fairly heavy aircraft losses I'm pulling back and I'm hoping Steve's thinking the same thing. Yorktown did eat a torpedo, but she's carrying less damage than Wasp or Hornet. That bomb hit on Lexington just bounced off the belt armor. I did get one torpedo home on one of his lesser carriers. Losing North Carolina hurt, with her magazine going up from the torpedo. Wish I could get hits like that. Most of the CVEs' air groups went to Marcus, so I now have plenty of air cover there to cover the transports. Ground air support is a bit short, but should improve. Lots of my planes went in unescorted. I wish they would have gone in as one group, but I know about the coordination issues with the USN.

Betties from Truk tried to hit my ships at Eniwetok and got nailed.

Things are heading down for me now.

Steve decided to pursue and wound up getting hits on Yorktown and Lexington. CAP did their part, but flak seemed to die this time around. It was good seeing him launch unescorted bombers this time.

Left unmolested, my beaten carriers probably get back. That's the trick, though. They've got a ways to go. Enterprise and Saratoga are headed east at full speed and should clear the area. At worst, I'll lose two fleet carriers and this will push the Marianas adventure off until mid-year. Still way ahead of schedule, historically. He seems to have far more carriers than I anticipated. He seems to have a glut of fighters over his forces.

Elsewhere, a big Chinese corps shows up in Ranchi, India. I can probably grow them into a monster. When the time comes, I can probably push overland through the jungle to reclaim Burma.

Supplies in Cape Town have been low, though I notice a big glut of resources sitting there, so I'm shipping some of that to India, to see if that sparks more supply production.

Transports are leaving Pearl to pick up one of the two divisions I've got on Guadalcanal. It doesn't appear he's headed through the Solomons, and I can use them for when I eventually hit the Philippines. I'll still have 3 independent regiments on the island -- two at Lunga and one at Tassafaronga. I may take Kusaie and Ponape with them to extend my search radius.

My Wake invaders will land at Pearl next turn.

24 January 1943

My damaged carriers got finished off. Yorktown fell to Betties, while his carriers took care of Lex.

He's got a small cruiser force roaming around now, which caught my tanker group, sinking 3 of the 4. My other two carriers are clear. I haven't checked on Wasp, but she should be most of the way back by now also. My last CVE also fell to said cruiser force.

My ships at Marcus are pulling out for now. His carriers are 7 hexes WSW of Marcus and I'm moving my ships directly to the NE, so hopefully I can clear the area. My main landing force somehow converted to a "Cargo" TF and isn't unloading any supplies, which is disturbing. Once all the dust settles, I can get the rest of the base units in and withdraw the infantry there.

I've moved another F4F squadron from Eniwetok to Marcus, to beef the CAP, though I'm heavily overstacked there now. When things settle, I'll probably pull planes out of Marcus. I've three P-38 squadrons at Eniwetok, and they'll probably be part of my core air group at Marcus when everything settles.

I see that only two answered my question posted 10 days ago so that is far from conclusive. I will refrain from making any comments in regard to tactics, operations or strategies so I can not be blamed for the outcome of any battles, like the one that just occurred in this contest. However by my count it was 1-1 to my question.

Looking in the states, I have the 5th Armored Division sitting there. The thought of dropping them on the Japanese makes me weak in the knees, but they're withdrawing in 58 days. I also need an outrageous amount of PPs to free them up.

Wasp is about 5.5 days out from Pearl. Likewise with the Wake invaders.

My ships departing Marcus are slowly moving. His carriers are sitting right on Marcus, putting them in air search range. A DD group is rushing there to interfere, and SBDs at Marcus may hopefully attack next turn. I don't want to take big transport hits.

28 January 1943

I think the chase after my ships has ended.

A few days back, his carriers savaged one transport group, but this had the more "commercial" transports, with the "X" in front of their designations. Further north, a light carrier was chasing Washington, escorting my more militarized transports. The battleships and cruisers ate many bombs (mostly 60 kg types), but were able to pull away and now his carriers appear to be headed homewards. Maybe a fuel issue.

Thanks to losing two carriers, I'm probably looking at the start of August to kick off my Marianas invasion. A wait for me, but historically, well ahead of schedule. Wasp, Enterprise and Saratoga should reach Pearl within the next 3 days. Hornet's already back, repairing. I need to get them back anyway, as their scout squadrons are due to withdraw in a month or so, their bomber squadrons doubling in size to 36. I think in April, the F6Fs come online at a rate of 130 per month, so I'll be filling out the carrier groups quickly. Before I kicked off this last invasion, there were two VT squadrons I forgot to flip to TBFs, so I'll take care of that, too. Lots of Avengers in the Pool right now. I probably have about 35 dash-3 Dauntlesses in the pool and over 140 dash-4 types.

Aboard two 20 knot transports, I'm sending my first Corsair squadron and a super long range dash-7 Recon Wildcat squadron to Kwajalein. I'll be able to move them to Wake or Marcus as needed. Regarding Marcus, I'll still have to get my infantry divisions out and support forces in. Once everything settles down I should be able to quietly do this. I'll probably bring carriers along, just in case. The Wake invaders are 3-4 days from Pearl. That part moved slickly, anyway. Marcus is overstacked with aircraft right now, so I'll eventually be pulling some of them out.

I had to keep up with ship withdrawals, which I let slide. I'm mostly caught up, but have to get a gunboat I have at Colombo up to Karachi to remove her. A base force and a supply force are unloading there, so maybe I can get that island built up into a base again.

I can't remember, but doesn't USN shipboard flak get a bonus later in some way? I remember against KenchiSulla, in 1945, it tended to shred anything that came near.

I think there is a boost to the flak "accuracy" values when the VT fuse becomes available, but I don't know when that is. This should be built into the game engine, like the boosts to US torpedo effectiveness through 1943.
