The VPs would start accumulating faster after this.

It's still amazing to me how fast everything went between Jan 15 and Feb 1. The Allies landed at Mersing, then Kota Bahru, then Victoria Point, then took a few bases in SW Indochina with paras and fast transports. Then larger invasions hit the East side of Indochina at Quinhon and Tourane.

At this point I'd planned to slow down and backfill to take important bases at Saigon, Cam Rann and elsewhere, but I noticed that some bases were lightly held on the Chinese coast. I had an airfield at Luangprabang that paras had taken and engineers had expanded. I sent the same paras in and took Pakhoi, Kwangchowan and Kiungshan. This gave a quick foothold on the Chinese mainland and bypassed IJA strongpoints at Vinh and on the Chinese border. I instead sent reserves in here (that were originally prepped for Saigon and Vinh) and very soon was marching up toward Nanning (with new prep for that base accumulating).

This move also allowed me to consider pushing forward a next step that I'd been prepping but hadn't planned to implement for at least another month or two; a dual invasion of Swatow and Northern Luzon. More on that later.

This is the info page for Feb 1. Still making progress, but caught up a little bit in these two weeks. Allied troop loss points are staggeringly high, (and the implications of this mean many Commonwealth troops are very understrength with no hope of ever filling out), so there is a lot of work to do here. The majority of the Burma Army is now behind Allied forward lines, and has little hope of escape. Those points will not be reduced and gained freely though, so I needed to quickly also get into Strat bombing range, which is the next goal.

Two weeks on and the forward progress has slowed, but significant gains were made in several areas. All but Saigon has fallen in South Indochina, and troops are marching on Vinh, beating up and isolating a large IJA force near there. A large army is about to cross and take lightly defended Nanning, opening the door to the rest of China while closing it for the escape of IJA troops to the South.

Most of Malaya is in Allied control, as is Burma, with troops about to move forward at Moulmein. The next stage of movement has begun, with the invasion of Luong and Swatow shortly after already moving. After that the next goal was to get a foothold on Formosa, which I'd planned as my major Strat bombing set of bases. Most of my troops were prepped for Kagi, but I switched at the last minute to the more lightly held Taichu, careful not to over-recon the base before getting close. Another benefit is that this base already has a size 7 field built. In fact the Japanese were very busy building facilities that the Allies are now taking full advantage of after capture. Some repair yards at Saigon, Hong Kong and Singapore have even been enlarged, which are in dire need right now.

The Singapore invasion by sea was almost due to land as well, a choice made to avoid the forced shock of crossing the causeway.

This is the info screen for Feb 15. Good progress. The IJ score down by 15 VP while the Allies pick up 4,005 VP in two weeks. [8D]

I'll now start to fill in the reports beginning as Hartwig Modrow takes over the game. He asked for no concessions in terms of rolling things back or having any slow-downs in the action, but decided to just hit the ground running. I had several ops on the way in and a lot just beginning in terms of control of the air over China, so I think the first weeks were a bit overwhelming, but he played well and offered some challenges right away.

As I pick this back up the Allies have just landed in several bases on Northern Luzon and are beginning to march to Appari. The Swatow invasion is moving in.

I've also made the decision to shift a lot of troops from the Indochinese coast to Pakhoi in order to march them up to mid-China and take more advantage of the breakthrough there. I need troops as close to Japan as possible, and the Japanese are reinforcing Vinh enough that it'll be a long drawn out battle if I go for it now. Better to let the airforce hit these bases for a while and bring troops from the rear to then begin a slow reducing campaign there. I'm lifting about 100k troops Dunkirk style off the beach in Indochina, which I've never attempted before, and so it's a bit dicey as the IJA is coming in fast to challenge.

The Swatow invasion lands and large formations of B-29s hit the IJA troops troops hard I preparation for the attack on the 21st. It's almost impossible to hold in clear hexes like this against Allied air power and late war units, especially with a 2.5:1 AV advantage. Chaochow also is taken by paras and follow on troops will head there.

After a few weeks of fighting Saigon falls, and Samah is about to be taken. These bases give big airfields, a new repair yard and great proximity to frontline operations for the next few months. The troops haul for Saigon is fairly good as well.

Troops are walking now toward Liuchow about the cross the river there, but it looks like there isn't much there to contest.

For the past week or so the Allies pick up +1,648 VPs and the Japanese gain +365. Not bad at 4.5:1, but I'm hoping the IJ score goes down, not up! [;)]

Here is a shot of the area of main operations. Eventually I'd like to get to Central China and link the coastal bases like Amoy by main roads to the area around Changsha and up to Chengteh in order to quickly move troops.

This will also isolate Canton and Hong Kong for the following troops to more easily take them and the units there without retreat paths. Retreat paths cause a lot of units to be bogged down chasing shattered troops across the map in order to completely wipe them out. I'd like to avoid this if possible by bottling them up first.

The main goal though is to get to Chungking to release the zombie Chinese Army who can take over this role of mop-up and garrison duty.

Fighter pools have recovered a bit since taking over Nov 30, 1944. I've jigged a lot of units to release frontline fighters to the units with the best pilots as the others train up defense. I'm now getting the best pilots back from many training units and will be upgrading to P-51D and other more plentiful models as I need to now.

USN planes are most plentiful, and Corsairs do a lot of the heavy lifting.

For bombers I've shepherded them carefully, and now have some decent pools in the USN and RAF, but the USAAF is still low. This might be the case for the duration. I haven't found it to impact my ops yet, but I'll really need the B-29B coming soon once I begin Strat bombing in earnest.

The Allied navies went on a rampage over night, hitting every base on Formosa and Hong Kong, with good results. This seemed to quell any strikes against the fleets near Swatow, and 250+ planes were destroyed no the ground for the day. Some of those were left at Swatow when it was taken on the first attack in spite of level four forts.

Samah, Medan, and Liuchow were also taken with big losses for the IJA.

On the 22nd the I-19 hit CVE Hollandia with two fish, but she'll survive, moving directly to Saigon for repairs.

The Japanese sent in numerous sweeps to Swallow but no bombers to follow. I had all CVs out of range and no CAP up, so they hit nothing. This is the bait. The Japanese can bomb my bases, but they won't know beforehand whether CAP will be up or not, and if not, there will most likely be a lot of AA as well to greet them.

The Singapore landing went well, allowing a small unit now moving to open the hexside without having to disrupt my entire army. Another 1k AV is sitting quietly a Johore waiting to move in.

This looks like the losses for the December strike in the South China Sea. Quite a few very good IJN CVs and surface ships went down it seems. The Aso was bombed at Taihoku, but may have made it out safely. Not sure.

I did notice that I had a lot of context to add to the last few pages, and I also think the first post with Hartwig is actually the one with the kamikaze hit on the PT. Yes, that's what I'm referring to. I haven't seen it since, but it's not in port either. I doubt that sunk it, but there is a chance. I'm guessing it had enough steam to make Shanghai or somewhere nearby.

It'll be great to hear more deeply about your side at some point. We're now about three weeks ahead of this date in game so I have to get some catch-up done here.

I know the strike in the South China Sea was incredibly fortunate for the Allies in how it played out. All of this would have been much more drawn out, painful, and potentially impossible if that hadn't happened.

On the 24th I was surprised by a ground move I hadn’t seen coming. The Japanese had assembled a large force from Manila to oust the Allies from Southern Luzon at Boac. It worked. I hadn’t noticed the movement icon and was caught completely off guard.

It’s a bad day as obviously these are permanent VPs, and nothing I can do about it now. A few units gone and about 450 VPs to the Japanese.

Not much else happening. A lot of moving pieces but not much action.

I need to get in Strat bombing range ASAP.

Here are the allied losses from the December South China Sea battle.A LOT more were damaged and due to a shortage of repair yards they're out of the battle for a long time. Some are too messed up to make it back to PH or Sydney, so I've just got to get them in pier side and hope I can take a bigger dry-dock facility soon.

Notice below on this list the massive defeats at Oosthaven and at Balikpapan. The Allies were very lucky to catch the IJN by surprise in December.

After many weeks of recon and study of Central China I've developed a better idea of how to move forward here as quickly as possible. There were several bases that had small garrisons and the IJ have been using a lot of smaller airfields throughout the area. Most of these are not on the rail network. I decided that once my 4Es had adequate bases in Indochina, Burma and India to reach these forward positions I'd begin a concerted air campaign to close virtually all of the airfields the IJ have developed here.

In conjunction with this I'd paradrop into very forward positions that are relatively less well defended. Then through air supply and troop lift I'd flesh these out into working forward positions through which I could push more troops in Strat mode along the gray roads.

Today I began sweeping Kweiyang, the biggest and most well used airfield currently in the area. I'll probe and then go all in to close it, since it's not on the rail, and bomb until those air groups can't fly out and have to disband.

Also, I sent paras to Chikhiang and will try to build and hold that base until the roads are connected in the next few weeks and I can Strat move a whole army here quickly. This will hopefully then link to Amoy on the Chinese coast in the future.

The Japanese swept the Allied CV CAP heavily at Swatow as the CVs moved to protect TFs bringing in more troops and supplies.

Allied recon had a fail on the 26th. I'd been getting reports of only one unit of less than 5k troops in Chungking, and knowing a Chinese HQ is usually there, I thought there was a chance he'd moved out the ID that would be needed for garrison requirements usually. Maybe to meet the threat to the South, moving something else in to Chungking that hadn't arrived yet?

I sent paras speculatively after some decent ground strikes, but of course as the bombers were going in I realised my recon guys were dead wrong; three parts of an IJA ID were there split into regiments, and I lost some good paras. At least the attack showed only level 6 forts, and the airfields were hit hard, so. I think I can keep the forts there until more numerous troops arrive in a few weeks.

Sweeps hit Kweiyang, which put up fierce resistance. There ewere also more battles at Swatow and around Luzon, with the Allies getting a slim advantage. Not enough. At Kweiyang it's acceptable since here I'm playing a long game and bombers will hopefully make up the difference in a few days.

Today Tsuyung and Chengtu were hit but not yet closed.
