I would be interested in hearing your opinion on this book. Can you share that?

The Clay Pigeons of St. Lo by Glover S Johns, Jr.

He wrote it in the third person. It is mostly about when he, as a CAVALRY officer, took over an infantry battalion a month or so before the capture of St. Lo. Since he was CAVALRY, his battalion did better than the other infantry battalions in the regiment with fewer losses as well.

Currently reading Day of Battle by Rick Atkinson. Covers the fighting in Sicily and Italy in WW2. I really enjoy this style of history telling, where you get a look at everything, the big picture, the generals, the leaders of state, and also lots of personal accounts from individual soldiers at the front. Of course, it makes for an extremely long read though.

I'm reading "The Witcher" books. The style is dry but the tales are very rich in content. This means that every word is there for a reason.

While I'm enjoying them, this sometimes creates a problem: there are many places and characters in every tale and the author assumes that you keep in mind everything. The result is that they are not "easy reading". They remind me more of Raymond Chandler than of the stray fantasy book you read for escapism.

Reading and re-reading anything and everything I can get may hands on concerning the Norwegian Campaign at present. But that's no hardship - there is some great books out there on this hugely interesting subject.

Their anthologies of "Hard Boiled" detectives were excellent. Several volumes or noir detective fiction from Dashiell Hammett, Mickey Spilane and Raymond Chandler were very nicely done.

Yes, indeed, have read the Raymond Chandler and also an anthology LoA did, lead story in that was The Killer Inside Me a very chilling tale....can't remember the title of the anthology ATM, but it is a very good read.

OK, well, the postman just dropped that two-volume Sci-Fi set on me WOOP WOOP so I'm going to be huddled tonight w/ that and making selections for the next few months ... when not playing TOAW!!

Still reading Wharton / etc. but I had to return Mysterium Magnum, that was just too much Medieval Philosophy / Theology for my taste, but still interesting in a weird sort of way. Good fodder for help solving crosswords, though.

Yes, I like how and what the author writes. The Odessa file is excellent with a nice twist at the end.

Still waiting for my next Library of America selection to arrive, in the mean time, I returned the books I had borrowed and checked out these just yesterday. They'll keep me busy for March:

Somebody that I knew who lived through that time said that when they relocated some graves at a cemetery, the coffins were all clawed up inside. The people were buried because people thought that they were dead but had revived in the cold ground.

Not a patch on Haarr's work I'm afraid. I mean not an uninteresting work but there are quite a number of typographical and worse, accuracy errors noticeable. Shame.

Unfortunately, I was not impressed on his Finland's War of Choice either, depicting Finland's second war against Soviet Union in 1941-1944. First one was Winter War. Old, English-only sources, resulting to what you describe above. Unfortunate, again, as the so called Continuation War and the path to it is not well covered in English literature. Now including his, too.

Finishing up (for the third re-read) on Samuel Morison's

History of the United States Naval Operations in the Second World War. Volume 12: Leyte. A perennial masterpiece. [8D]
