It will be interesting to see what they do next. Bombard Miri and Brunei? Resupply Luzon? Rescue troops? Invade? Surface raid, Sweeps and bombing of Cam Ranh Bay or Saigon followed by 4E bombing...

I have a battleship and cruiser and 8 destroyers 7 hexes away undetected...the Akagi a little further north spotted.

Air Hqs at Balikpapen, Luzon, Kuching and Saigon/Cam Ranh Bay.

Saigon has 5/8 DL now....

Shoho continues to pump out the counter flooding, probably for the next two days then will most likely begin work on the system repairs.

I fully expect beasts at night here (17 hexes), and or perhaps at the juicy target of Cam Ranh Bay (20 hexes). B17D have an extended range of 22, the E 18 and the newly arriving F at 16.

And of course the Allied carriers are close enough to strike.

July 3, 1942

Night time search reports ABDA fleet a little east of Brunei.

Lots of sub encounters...

Super aggressive...

Actually punishing some subs this day so far...

1st Sentai, some of the best pilots in the IJAAF, sortie against 5 Mitchells...two get thru out of the original 5 but miss as they try to skip bombs into the cargo ships in port.

Here They Come...

A little to the north...the one turn highlight was damaging a Soviet sub.[:)]

Shoho crews hard at work. I will fine tune the repair facilities this turn to prioritize her patch to get her out of here.

No night bombing.

good job getting her to a port ... amazing she made it ... I doubt I would have been able ... I would have heard gurgling for sure. [:(]

But still any little blip, yard fire, whatever that causes sys damage to increase by 3 would be disaster.

It is my experience that Sys damage can't reach 100. I documented this at some point or other. I had several cruisers in a port being bombed daily or almost daily, but the puny Japanese AP bombs couldn't punch through the armor so as long as fires didn't reach 100 they wouldn't sink.

July 4th, 1942

A day with lots of carnage...several night bombing runs here and at Miri and Brunei...Shoho safe for now.

First strike....the ABDA's fleet location is surprising, and the worst possible for all the restricted range attacks.

16 Planes get thru, and target carriers some of which are smoking with minor damage.

But alas, despite being excellent pilots they all miss. A second squadron goes in without escorts, and a Val/Zero strike stands no chance flying at 15K.

An afternoon strike gets Nell thru and misses.

Allied strikes fragment and don't target the battleship next door, but savage a lot of merchant shipping. In the afternoon the CV strikes still fragment, but some do go after the battleship. A6M3 does well for day. A6M2 not so much.

This squadron gets in two strikes, brushing aside the Lightning CAP, and manages to miss the CLs present, but does hit some junky merchant shipping in both the morning and afternoon.

About 2 weeks later than I had hoped to accomplish, the first Tojo sweep arrives.

Strafing Nicks in a small Chutai....savage and sink an AVD.

Tried to get cute and use restricted range naval attacks around Luzon and pay the price.

Ouch. almost 150 planes lost in a day against about 40? ... that hurts, bad ... I hate to say it, but this looks too much like one of my games ... my 2E's get through the CAP and don't hit anything ....
