I learned on a Tan 1978 Ford Pinto. 4-Speed. We called it "Root Beer" Fun car (and no.....it had the regular rear bumber so did not explode.) Actually that thing ran like a charm once we replaced the entire CAM. The "Professor" (and yes.....he actually was a university professor) we bought it from for $600.00 had litterally not changed the oil in 10 years of owning it. He had simply topped off the oil as it got low. Put 40k miles on the thing in under two years and it never even threatened to break down. Sadly....it's career was cut short after being hit by a stolen Toyoda. I was fine.....after all cars still had metal fenders and steel bumbers back in those days. I liked that car. [:)]

Been driving Nissan Sentras ever since..and each one including the present one have all been manual transmission. Thats how i ended up being the designated driver in England during a buddy and mine's trip. He had failed to specify an automatic and we ended up with a manual trans. car. So I had to do some quick learning how to drive shifting with my left hand and driving on the left (aka the WRONG!) side of the road.

I learned how to drive stick shift (manual) from friends and just kind of hung on to it as a developed skillset, "just in case". It's been helpful, as I can pick it up again pretty quickly.

I've only owned one manual, a 2001 MR2 Spyder. Loved driving that thing, but it was oh-so impractical. It did have a fine gearshift.

Also, for you flatlanders, it's easy to talk about how fun driving a stick is. Not so much for Seattleites and San Franciscans and people that live on steep hills. I wouldn't want one if I lived in such places still.
