Dec 14th more of the same. A few of my ships got into a deathtrap at Singkawang because ships dont move towards their home base when they retreat from a combat, so instead of retreating NE or NW towards Cam Rahn Bay, they have been retreating SW and the next move phase puts them right back in Singkawang where they fight again and retreat SW again, then move back into Singkawang, then retreat SW ect. Not exactly sure how the retreats are calculated.

Admiralty Islands fell to a fragment of the 66th and an eng company. Base construction starting. Hong Kong fell. 48th and 16th division closing on Clark from the north. Should be in the base next turn. Going to try to direct his retreat AWAY from Bataan to see if I can by not occupying Cabanatuan (east of Clark). 33rd div closing on Batangas (just south of Manila). Not sure if they will arrive next turn or the turn after. Wake invasion force should hit the beach next turn. Tarawa fell to a single support squad of the 52nd.

As I just caught up on this AAR, please forgive me for returning to a topic from a few pages back, namely, the long setup time for the first Japanese turn.

I have always wished for a setup phase in which the Japanese player can, within reasonable limits, place units in accordance with his plans. I know the "magic movement" can sort of be used to accomplish this, but it still requires taking stock of scattered units. To me, it's much easier to say, I have XX divisions in Southern Area Army, where do I want them? Back in the days of board games, setup was crucial. Given that the Japanese player is the government (whereas the Allied player takes on the role of a theater commander), setup flexibility seems reasonable. I would even think it ok to designate HQs that bases report to without paying PPs. Pulling units from restricted commands for free would be unrealistic, however.

I doubt a setup phase is contemplated for AE, but could this be modded by changing the starting locations for units? How easy would it be for a Japanese player to create one or more "mods" where the only difference is unit start locations (e.g. SE Pac variant, India invasion, etc.)?

Sorry to hear about your tooth YH, and hope you're on the mend - sounds as though it's a bit worse than something oil of cloves would help with as a palliative. [:(]
 
I have difficulty in understanding why empty bunkers should lead to system damage.  I appreciate that without steerage you're liable to be slapped by beam seas, but it shouldn't be beyond your crews' wit to rig a drogue.
 
For that matter, I can't really see any rationale for ships being retreated away from their home base:  "Hey, Toshio, we've been hit - let's head for Pearl."

As I just caught up on this AAR, please forgive me for returning to a topic from a few pages back, namely, the long setup time for the first Japanese turn.

I have always wished for a setup phase in which the Japanese player can, within reasonable limits, place units in accordance with his plans. I know the "magic movement" can sort of be used to accomplish this, but it still requires taking stock of scattered units. To me, it's much easier to say, I have XX divisions in Southern Area Army, where do I want them? Back in the days of board games, setup was crucial. Given that the Japanese player is the government (whereas the Allied player takes on the role of a theater commander), setup flexibility seems reasonable. I would even think it ok to designate HQs that bases report to without paying PPs. Pulling units from restricted commands for free would be unrealistic, however.

I doubt a setup phase is contemplated for AE, but could this be modded by changing the starting locations for units? How easy would it be for a Japanese player to create one or more "mods" where the only difference is unit start locations (e.g. SE Pac variant, India invasion, etc.)?

Well what most of us "old timers" do (as the Japs anyway) is set up a "default" first turn and any given game we start we use this and make whatever changes we want to it. So yes, you might put 24 or so man-hours into that turn, but after that you can modify it to whatever you want in future games in an hour or less. And you would have to ask Tree how long the first allied turn takes because I have never done it.

I have difficulty in understanding why empty bunkers should lead to system damage. I appreciate that without steerage you're liable to be slapped by beam seas, but it shouldn't be beyond your crews' wit to rig a drogue.

For that matter, I can't really see any rationale for ships being retreated away from their home base: "Hey, Toshio, we've been hit - let's head for Pearl."

Dec 14th more of the same. A few of my ships got into a deathtrap at Singkawang because ships dont move towards their home base when they retreat from a combat, so instead of retreating NE or NW towards Cam Rahn Bay, they have been retreating SW and the next move phase puts them right back in Singkawang where they fight again and retreat SW again, then move back into Singkawang, then retreat SW ect. Not exactly sure how the retreats are calculated.

Admiralty Islands fell to a fragment of the 66th and an eng company. Base construction starting. Hong Kong fell. 48th and 16th division closing on Clark from the north. Should be in the base next turn. Going to try to direct his retreat AWAY from Bataan to see if I can by not occupying Cabanatuan (east of Clark). 33rd div closing on Batangas (just south of Manila). Not sure if they will arrive next turn or the turn after. Wake invasion force should hit the beach next turn. Tarawa fell to a single support squad of the 52nd.

If players don't want the uncertainty of the PH result they can agree on a replay beforehand. That way you get the result you want and have plenty of room for those who prefer the randomness of the attack.

After all PH was just a single incident that turned out the way it did. It could have been any other result as well, like a total disaster or a total success. It just happened to be a mediocre result that we take as a guideline and expect to be reproduced by the game.

But this is not about replaying history, if you want that, read a book. The game has to be within historical plausible boundaries, thats all. Comparing to real history leads you nowhere because you're not replaying history, nor can you with a (any) game.

Another option might be for the Japanese player to put a squadron or two of Kates on airfield attack?

Its all ships, the smaller they are (as it appears to me) the faster they accumulate damage. You can put PBs in with barges, you can also stick an AO in with them. Frankly a PB is good as you want an escort with them or a sub can shell them to death whereas it isnt going to touch them with a torp.

That was 2 or 3 days of running without fuel. And I have yet to get barges into the fray. They might be useful in China in the rivers, I havent tried that yet.

Well frankly, the reason I am doing it (and only with 1 of my barge TFs) is my "barge assembly point" is a fair distance away from Japan. Im sending them to Peleliu for use in the NEI. The Dutchies are extremely weak and there are a lot of dot bases in the area. Getting troops in and out of these bases is still evolving. My theory (at least as it is right now) that the most efficient way of taking these bases is with 2-3 barges in a group and I want to test out that theory.

Well the low fuel thing is just another of the micro-management that is prevalent in AE, but on the plus side of that you get a listing in your operations report of all the TFs that dont have enough fuel to complete the mission. And the really handy part is you get this warning BEFORE they run out of fuel [:D]

If you want to move barges (and other buy-for-supply types like PT or midget sub) over long distances you can do it by returning them to the pool and buying them where you want them. This emulates packing them on a ship and moving the ship to the destination.

Just return them to pool (button on the ship screen), get supply to the destination, and buy them back. Some limitations but it works fine.

Since barges are used for close in-shore operations, having them accumulate damage when they've run out of fuel isn't that far off-base. Picture them being washed ashore by tides and/or currents - some will be salvageable and some will be lost entirely...

Larger ships at sea accumulating a small amount of system damage is also believable - a ship drifting helplessly is likely to take on some damage as it is tossed about by the sea. Hopefully no large ship will be in danger of sinking to this game mechanism - but now having to pay a price for miscalculating your fuel load seems to be a good thing to me.

I've never used barges in WITP without them running out of fuel! If you have to refuel them every 2 or 3 hexes, unless their range has changed in AE they are useless, costing more supplies/fuel than they can deliver.

But in stock I have used the barges to carry supply far beyond their "range". I have often used them to carry supply from Paramushiro to Kiska for example. The barges in stock perform this mission just fine. And of course they have to make the return trip as well - they are "in the red" during 90% of this journey with no ill effects. I tell myself they are "hoisting sail" !!! [:D][:D][:D] to offer myself an explanation of this behavior.

I haven't tried this in AE. If the barges take damage when out of fuel like other warships - then the "hoisting sail" trick will not work in AE.

I think your the third person on the AE team so far who said they haven't tired barges in AE yet![:D]

I agree barges shouldn't be able to sail around the world like ships but, they can float/sail with currents/tide part of the way. They were useful in WITP for three reasons the didn't cost much fuel(no fuel needed for return), immune to AI air attacks, they could go where ships couldn't. In AE the AI aircraft will attack them?(I've seen the AI attack PT boats, haven't seen barges yet in the AAR's) and they cost much more fuel to run, don't know if they can sneak in or out near an enemy airbase. If they use more fuel than they can deliver they are now useless. Nobody is going to spend 200 fuel points to deliver 60 in the game, and no one is going to manage fuel dumps every 2 or 3 hexes, even if it's historically correct.

Maybe some barge types need to modeled more like midget subs?

Sounds like a bug that could be hard to squash without seriously messing with the retreat rules...

I don't know about Japanese barges, but in CHS (at least) US barge TFs generally will have a 6-7 hex range. It isn't much, but if you stage them from base to base (rather like the Japanese did when sending them down the slot) you can make use of them without them running out of fuel. 

In WitP Im like Joe, I use barges to haul supply into enemy air range over sometimes long distances. Barges suffer no ill effects doing this on empty fuel tanks. In AE you need the fuel. But that doesnt mean that you have to go base to base 3 hexes (the maximum range of a barge). Stick a single PB in with a few of them and suddenly they have a range of 27 hexes (34 with just 2 barges). Once you get into an area that has enemy air, yes, you will want to cut the PB out of the TF so you will need an area like the Solomons so you can go base to base. But also remember that in AE, you have a truckload more bases than even in CHS.

Here for example. You can see all the additional dot bases between Borneo and Malaya that could be used as barge staging points:



And herein lies "the experiment" for sending in the barges to begin with. Taking all these dot bases isnt that hard to do, but getting the troops back out is problematic (as of right now that is, its still evolving) because loading rates are based on port size and you can only load something like 6 squads a day off a 0 sized port. So my working theory is simply, dont put more than 6 squads on these islands to begin with. I just took Tarawa with a single support squad last turn.
