Thing to do is pull back and dig in before the Soviets start their offensive. Unless you're right on top of a critical objective you should be on the defensive from at least a couple of turns ahead of the earliest date these events can hit, with your mobile units in reserve to respond to crises.

Now you tell me. Two turns before the SWO started I had all my front line troops in "F" states and they were all green with great proficiency and I had a full division per hex facing the threat and they STILL broke through. I shall eventually try it again, but right now I'm fairly well burned out.
