"This isn't the first time the enemy's tried to raid Baker Island with bombers," the officer said. "but we feel our installation there can well take care of itself."

"We maintain a strong Marine combat air patrol over the island at all times," he said. "And the anti-aircraft defense is first-rate."

"In all," the Navy spokesman continued, "our defense suffered only a few air casualties, and all of these were planes with just minor damage. The enemy, however, suffered severe losses, and we doubt he'll be back soon."

For the second day in a row Baker Island was bombed by Japanese planes. "Both attacks came in from Tarawa Atoll," said a Marine source. "We don't know what their intent is, but as always, our base is on full alert."

The 5th Air Force changed targets yesterday and hit an airfield situated near Buin, a village located on the southeastern tip of Bougainville Island in the Solomons chain.

"This was a target of opportunity," said the 5th Air Force liaison officer at Port Moresby. "Our reconnaissance indicated the Japanese had built up a fair amount of fighter and patrol planes at this base, so we hit it this morning with three squadrons of B-17s. As far as we know the raid was successful, with a number of enemy aircraft destroyed on the ground."

In another night air action, twin-engine bombers out of Port Moresby once more worked over the port facilities at Lae.

In Burma, the British command once more launched its air force based on Chandpur at Japanese concentrations around Pagan.

A Japanese submarine was spotted about 300 miles northeast of Cooktown, Australia yesterday. Allied naval assets in the area immediately attacked.

"As far as we know this was one of their R-type boats," said a Navy spokesman. "She must have been hit several times, and broke up directly thereafter. That submarine won't bother us again."

20 June 1942

Another Japanese submarine was spotted yesterday, south of the entrance to Milne Bay. Destroyers of both the Royal Navy and USN attacked immediately.

"There's been increased enemy activity in that area since we moved into Kiriwina Island," said a Navy spokesman. "But we feel our convoys to and from are adequately protected. This last boat was one of their fleet types, and we sank it inside an hour of the spotting."

Fifth Air Force B-17s out of Port Moresby revisited Buin airfield last night and did a fair amount of damage according to officials. "As long the Japanese continue to base their aircraft within range of our heavies we'll continue to hit them as hard as we're able. This was an especially good mission. I'm told the facility was a shambles by the time our boys flew out of there, with any number of enemy aircraft put out of commission."

Medium bombers out of Port Moresby also hit the port of Lae again. The results of this raid were said to be productive.

21 June 1942

The airfields at Rabaul were targeted yesterday by B-17s out of Port Moresby. According to 5th Air Force sources the attack went in as planned. "There's no secret to any of this. The enemy periodically parks fighters and bombers at Rabaul, and when he does we periodically smash these aircraft."

The British air force out of Chandpur has successfully attacked the airfield at Pagan in Burma. This raid last night consisted of Blenheim medium and Wellington heavy bombers.

"We made a pretty neat job of it," said a British military official. "A couple more like that and we'll really have them cut down to size."

22 June 1942

British Blenheim, Hudson and Wellington bombers roared over Pagan again last night to deliver their cargoes of death.

Sources verified that more enemy planes were destroyed on the ground in this most recent air strike into Burma.
