It show only auxiliary planes but base can be full of damaged frames.
So if during last bombardment run You damaged enemy planes they still must be there

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The Allied subs continue to take a beating without any real success against our TFs. I know this could change at any moment. One hit on a BB could spiral out of control, slowing the TF and resulting in lots more problems, so I will continue to send Es in droves to their doom in order to clear the way for bombardments and SAGs near Moppo. One E lost to a sub today but about 5-7 subs sunk, a few more damaged. Some more HIT messages from air crews.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]KOREA: [/font] The Allies remove a few divisions from Masan and seem comfortable with bombarding and holding there. Once the removed units transit around and as I'm assuming they will, head North, I'll try to get in behind the army at Masan. I have a tank division moving over now that could get in there quickly.

Looks like the 3,500AV with armor will move up to try for Gunzan. It's dicey there still with only one fort and a clear hex. A big CD unit is about to unload to head over there and about another 1k AV plus tons of arty are still awaiting AA to move in. Another 2k AV reserve is preparing to rail over from Fusan. Just dropping some supply as well and I'm going to move the Kwangtung Army HQ in to help draw some there. It has to hold the first big attack so I can see how much more it needs to be steady before I can allocate an infiltration force to get behind the enemy lines.

Moppo is likely closed for now, and I've got the now spotter equipped Yamatos heading in again tomorrow. Should be more mines as the DMs were back, so fingers crossed. I'm sending in PBs and Es first to get a DL on the new minefield, then hoping for the best. Upped the escort for the Yamatos and I'll send three CL plus four DD to one hex beyond Moppo to hopefully deflect any quick moving Fletcher TFs that arrive. I was surprised they didn't post at Moppo yesterday.

The fleet moved North of Moppo and didn't announce in any readable way it's intentions. Why would they not send in the SAGs to Moppo and get the transports in if that was the plan? Why are they hanging out North of that base slightly closer to LBA and KB strikes and farther from their support in the Ryukus? It all points to a move North somewhere. Not sure we've got enough to repell a big landing, but some pieces are at least in place now. Kaishu, Chinnampo, Keijo and Gunzan are prepped, The CD guns have gotten into combat mode in the two northern bases and the heavy arty at Keijo should be a tough deterrent to a landing there in addition to the +3 swamp. Gunzan seems less likely of a target, but has 2k AV and some arty currently. The AA will be ready tomorrow and the rest will flood in.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING:[/font] Some small strikes go in alone to Tsu. Were these intentional? About 20-25 B-24s are shot down for no hits on factories. Interesting. Could it just be a test to see what kind of CAP I've added? The CAP here performed, well, okay. Still not enough bleeding over. I've got more air support heading this way, some new AA with radar and the fighter units should fill out n the next few days, repairing damaged planes. Other areas get new coverage as well.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]HOME ISLANDS: [/font] The main focus is allocating fighter groups, as mentioned above. I did notice as I was changing training groups to kami that only a certain amount can be changed per day. I went through maybe ten the first time doing this, but this turn only was able to range about 2-3 groups before the option became disabled. Seems random. Has anyone seen this before?

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] Hong Kong will fall in days. The first Allied DA gets a 1:2 and cleans up on the small IJA units here. The Northern Army is doing fine, building forts as the Allied forces move in. The door is now closed but Psingyiang is being approached on three sides by our forces. I'll have the base barring major Allied troop transport in a few days, then will attempt to open all three NW-N hex sides trapping the Allies back and freeing our troops to move on if necessary. It's not decided by any means, but it looks like this stalling measure is close to working. No Allied air strikes today though which is ominous. Have they begun to rebase?

It show only auxiliary planes but base can be full of damaged frames.
So if during last bombardment run You damaged enemy planes they still must be there

Yep. For he second day in a row they were rained out. Thunderstorms over Hiroshima! Grrrrrrrr. [:-]

As for the damaged, he could always simply fly one or two planes out, then disband the groups, incurring the losses and costing supply to refill the groups elsewhere, but he may not want to do that thinking the engineers will get it working. It could also be that a massive Allied naval move wil stop the bombardments and it'll be able to be reopened soon, but I'm hoping the bombers can add in and keep some decent damage on the fields.

Around 350 Peggys and Frances are aiming there again tomorrow, all ground bombing trained at around 70 skill, with 1-2 groups trying to hit the port as well to take out the AGP, any damaged ships and subs lurking, and lots of sweeps will precede plus some LR CAP over the base and the Yamatos. If it all goes in then it will be a big pile of dust there soon. If not, back to the drawing board.

Yeah, if there is not a land bridge to another base in my experience the airframes are lost. The loss of the 200-250 fighters and Patrol planes there is nothing to sneeze at for sure, but even more important is getting the field to stay closed.

If the bombers fly tomorrow and get some more hits I'll then start to add in strikes to the ground troops to keep disruption up. This could be tough to recover from without another airfield in the area. I also have to really get some more stuff onto Saisho To in case he realizes how important that could be, although it's field is at 0 now, so I could likely suppress that too.

The ground troops are mostly in the clear as well and as they begin nearing Gunzan some strikes will divert that direction.

Are you serious? No wonder I'm scratching my head at the rate Jocke is unloading amphibious TF's. I see 9 DD's and 1 xAP and wonder how is he unloading so fast. Sorry, but that's a brutal change if the beta won't identify more than 10 ships in a single TF. I can guarantee there's a good chance a player might play/react differently knowing he's trying to intercept a TF of 50 ships. Jocke's informed me that the beta has also reduced the effectiveness of search. No wonder I'm struggling spotting anything or getting enough intelligence to make informed decisions. I may think only a few transports have unloaded supply when it could be 10x that number. Wow, hardly a change for the better in my opinion.

Just to clarify this from what I've seen in game:

On mouse-over of a TF it will show a number of ship types (the first 10 as mentioned above) and then a +number of additional ships - I think this has been so for years.

This definately true for friendly TFs, I assume it's the same for enemy TFs with high DL?

This is a long war. We started on 11/24/2011. That is a long time to play one game with one opponent. Over the course of that time we've gone from relative beginners to fairly experienced players, although with still a lot to learn. We've gone from a friendly, optimistic comaraderie, through some mutual frustration, some minor disagreements, short flares of actual discord, and back to a different kind of camaraderie infused with all of the other interactions we've had through the game. It's been fulfilling to last this long with this agreement and mutual respect that keeps us playing still intact. It's been fun to battle it out with someone who plays really hard, learns very fast and continually adapts to challenges in game.

At this point in the war I'm sure both of us feel we can read each other pretty well. In fact it's this long time playing that develops how we play, and only now at the end of the game do I feel each of us is coming into our own. Jocke has systems figured out for the massive undertaking that is the Allied war machine. I have figured out a lot about how to keep the Empire competitive even after many serious setbacks in 44 and early 45.

It's the reading each other part that I wanted to touch on today though. After the first big bombardment hit Moppo I should have changed everything in my defenses. Why? After each setback of some magnitude Jocke strikes, and strikes hard. Usually the very next day after something bad happens he hits something completely unrelated. This time the day after he went all-in with the 4Es in daylight against airframe factories, one base just a single hex from Tokyo. That takes guts, and he pulled it off. I wasn't playing him, though, at this point. That woke me up a little.

For the rest of the game I'd like to work on this psychological game. Play the opponent. Use deception. Predict reactions. Interpret clues. Change up everything often. Don't be predictable.

Even if the Home Islands have certain spots I should really stack up on and cover consistently, I have to change the tune, or at least how the tune sounds from a distance. Recon is not perfect and there are lots of ways to play with what the Allies can see. I'll have to scour the ops reports and look at where he's looking, see what has DL every turn, and move units in new ways to increase confusion.

Now that there is doubt surrounding the Allied invasion of Korea, now that the air force has been temporarily reduced, the pressure has to stay on. I have some new ideas, and things I have not tried, there are a LOT of planes and ships in the area, a lot of troops on the ground and on their way to the battlefield. This feels like the grand culmination of the war. The decisive battle. The next few months will decide a lot.

I've not seen the + with an extra number of ships when seeing the opponent's TFs. For the opponent I never see more than ten, no matter how many I find there later, for each TF.

Here are some examples. Each of these includes amphib TFs that are sometimes more than 50 ships, some of them also include CV TFs which are often larger tan 10 ships once engaged.

Damn! The air strikes again fail to fly. Not even sweeps going to Moppo right now. Three turns in a row?[:-][:@][&:] ???

The Allies decided to contest the sea at Moppo and wiped out a lot of Es. All big DD TFs and small DE TFs.

The Yamato and escorts pounded against the DDs but were halted, even with Tanaka {EDIT: sorry, not Tanaka. He's with the four lob BBs. Another though with 70 naval and 76 aggression, so no slouch. Rant deleted.] in charge, from moving in to bombard. That sucks. Not even the clearing CL charge got the DDs out in time for the BBs to move in and they turned back. {EDIT: later I realized the Yamatos ended up with only one DD, so probably good to back up and try again later. Maybe these guys now what's up after all?][:D]

The CLs do alright, but still don't really pound the opposing DDs even after they've already fought three other battles.

Airstrikes picked off only one beat up DD after the days engagements, and tomorrow will now be critical. I need planes to fly! No sweeps from any base hit Moppo, no strikes from Hiroshima flew, only a few Jills went for the damaged DDs.

Here are all of the planes not flying. I think Hiroshima had something like light rain today. Even the Frances that are on naval/port strike didn't go to get anything at Moppo or nearby. Not too pleased with this. I'll have to put planes on from multiple bases tomorrow, but now CAP may have a chance to get in the air, so it could again be a pitched battle and back to square one.

You are my inspiration, you know that right? [:D]

At times I struggle to understand the game mechanism that makes groups not fly on a given turn. Sometimes I discover (by accident!) messages in the ops or event report, that I would have missed, which explain it. Like a group that looked as if it didn't fly (no damaged planes, no or virtually no fatigue) but there was a 'could not locate target' for one reason or another type message.

Other times I am just guessing and I don't have a lot to offer in the way of ideas!

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The Allied subs hang on, take more pounding, then get a few stragglers after naval battles near Moppo. The attrition has to take a toll after a while, but I've not seen much change around here. The DL is through the roof though. Most ASW TFs get attacks in without subs launching, and that means we know where they are. As a bonus, the Es and PB have been sweeping a few mines, likely making these new fields 'known' at Moppo.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]KOREA: [/font] The bombing strikes not flying to hit Moppo has become critical. It's time to make sure. I'll have to use more than the chosen 2Es and just hope for some hits with 30-35 ground skill pilots. It does seem that it's weather over the base as none of my sweeps have flown there from the four different bases allocated to fly. Fusan and the Ki-83s there has 2200 air support and good supply, a level 9 field and it's only three hexes away, so if that's not going, it's over Moppo. Allied experimental weather control devices!

On the day the Allies lose around 6 DD and we lose 4 DD plus a shedload of Es. About 15 I think sunk. Still a lot left to use! [:D]

Yamato and Musashi take no damage from 1-2 5" shells, but account for 5 of the sunk DDs although Jills finished one off.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING:[/font] No sign of anything today. I imagine the B-29s need to refill and rest for a while.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]HOME ISLANDS: [/font] The Allies sweep Kumamoto but no air strikes follow. Some Corsairs and Mustangs get 2:1 today, but again, our pilots survive most battles where the Allied aces are left on a small island off Kyushu.

Most free troops have now moved to Korea. Now I'll be trying to pick up some more brigades and loose change from Formosa in case it's needed.

I'll have to play tomorrow carefully, but with multiple options going. There will be naval activity, and there will be some airstrikes flying. We're going to have to assess how much, as I am getting the tingly feeling that the sweeps over Kumamoto were not by chance and that the Allies will try to take advantage of the focus on Fusan to hit elsewhere in the HI. Still, that base is most important now, but I can't let the bombers that have been waiting for days get hit on the ground, so a good CAP will be up.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] The RAF found and hit the small units heading toward Psingyiang. They were for the one in the clear, which is behind the other, and trashed the already weakened regiment. No worries, the mission is still moving forward.

[font="Trebuchet MS"]Now it's pretty clear that the TFs with the Allied CVs are indeed amphibs, but it is less clear where they are going. The fleet moved South just by a hex or two. Seems now like they're hanging around, but not too close.

Have all of these movements around Moppo given the Allied commander pause? Will they simply drop support and reinforcements to Moppo or will they move up to start a new spur of the invasion? The next few turns will tell.[/font]

At times I struggle to understand the game mechanism that makes groups not fly on a given turn. Sometimes I discover (by accident!) messages in the ops or event report, that I would have missed, which explain it. Like a group that looked as if it didn't fly (no damaged planes, no or virtually no fatigue) but there was a 'could not locate target' for one reason or another type message.

Other times I am just guessing and I don't have a lot to offer in the way of ideas!

I checked through for those and didn't find any, plus the sweeps are coming from 4-5 different bases and other flights went from those, so it has to be weather over Moppo. Looks like thunderstorms all over in China too, so if that system comes in we could still be out of luck.
