Don't think Andy has assets for further ops; Southern New Guinea ops will continue with LBA support.
Burma offensive requires all air and land assets there.

SRA ops can not be conducted without Allied carriers now supporting Line Islands ops.
So we don't have any other surprises coming me thinks.

Very tempted to hit the enemy fleets at Christmas Island but the Judy nerf plus low fuel reserves makes this a-no-go ops...!-(
Got more fleet oilers coming in to meet with KB; first replenishment fleet quickly dried up all fuel reserves before the carriers could be topped up.
- Our largest fleet oilers were in Java to load more fuel when KB went east so we didn't have our usual reserves at hand.

Well, Tony d is only 7 mph slower than c version AND it gets not only a 250kg bomb, lower service rating but also an extended range of 9 hexes with drop tanks.
This doubles this type's value for me! 100 well armored and bomb armed fighters can be a threat to all enemy task forces. The only other main upgrade for the Tony
is the KAI / Tony-100 models but with a service rating of 4...me not thinks so! [:'(]

The last version of the Raiden with 4x20mm cannons is interesting; will make it just as efficient an bomber interceptor as the Shinden.

PzB, have you considered weighing in on Rader's ground bombing thread? It got a little heated but your previous 60% hit situation in Burma plus today's bombing in the Line Islands are useful data points.

Can always post some results...I find it pretty obvious but it's kinda hard to get acceptance for it.

Massive sea and air bombardments against Christmas Island followed by more troops landing (remainder of troops initially landed me thinks).
The shock attack achieves 1-1, reduces forts to level 5 and cause over 4000 Jap casualties to 2000 Allies.

Amazed we're still holding on but we're getting near the end game!

Christmas Island

This was mostly a good turn that was tainted by the semi-surprising fall of Christmas Island!
- The reason; Andy finally got a good dice roll and a 2600+ AV adjusted shock attack while our adjusted defense was 29 [&:]
So Allies got a 91-1 !!!!!!!! odds

That's quite insane really, 500 AV more than reported combat strength for a worn down enemy force and 29 for our 30k troops with 5 forts.
...the latter is borked unfortunately, such thing will happen from time to time in a game of this complexity I guess.

The combination of another CAG strike - all ac now attacking our key 54th division + another forced bombardment by our troops caused
over 1000 casualties and massive disruption. While the fall of Christmas Island was inevitable unless we gambled with sending in the Kido Butai I'm still
pointing a finger at the uber effectiveness of ground attack ac. Our strongest fortress should have been able to resist for more than a week with over 35000 troops.

Just nothing to be done about it really.

Well, I did evacuate cadres of various key units and the remaining ones will be rebuilt.
Not finished this turn yet, will take some time. Think we just have to pack up and leave the Line Islands and pull back to the Gilberts.

To compensate we had a string of successes today:

1. A naval force wiped out a large LCT convoy at Merauke
2. A renewed air effort from Fanning Island claimed 6 B-29s shot down
3. Strikes from Fanning Island against an unprotected Allied invasion force claimed 8 torpedo hits on assaults transports, troop ships and a heavy cruiser
4. The battleship Revenge was confirmed sunk of PM earlier this year
5. Numerous enemy ships were reported damaged or sunk as result of collisions after encounters with Japanese ships

E.g. Tony Ic should update to Tony Id in 04/44 but 18 days in and with plenty supply - no upgrade.
Same issues with some Helen IIbs - hoped they would upgrade to Peggy but nope.

What is your source? BTW I went through my aviation literature yesterday and the D4Y performance values in various subtypes are pretty close to or precise wikipedia stuff. It looks like there are very few sources for Japanese hardware and some of them are contradicting each other, sometimes even themselves. For example I have 2 IMHO(otherwise) very creditable books that say Ki-61, Ki-100 and Ki-44 armaments in every sub-model are different to what they are in Witpae. Neither of them lists their own sources so what can we do... So much easier with the German stuff as online, there are 50+ Rechlin tests for both prototypes and production examples for everything at every altitude, temperature, flap and radiator position etc. [:D]

I don't know about the 29 adjusted AV of your forces, but the adjusted AV of Andy's force seems more in line with expectations for a shock attack. Look at the unit list and you will notice that he was finally attacking with all complete units. I do not know what his interim leaders were (for the 4 division fragments operating previously), but it is reasonable to expect that the permanent commanders of those divisions were among the best available.

I agree, it should have held out at least 30 days if not 60. But, in the thread in MAIN there is little to no support to any change. They discount Iwo as being the exception and feel even 7 days to be too long. I'm quite surprised by that. Thanks for posting.

Oh well, just means more HR's in PBEM. I'm very surprised that point in my discussion was not picked up. No one even brought up C&G's AAR and why it ended. Oh well, you can lead a horse to water ... [;)]

And for those of us who play the AI and can't use HR's, it means more editting. I'm using Nemo's fix for the 4E's now: put the 500lb bombs into sticks of 4 - 8 each. Still testing on the balance yet in Downfall. Time consuming of course. And worse, very few people will ever expend this effort ...

Keep up the good fight. I am sure this will go down as the premier IJ AAR that will ever get posted. I doubt anyone will ever duplicate your results.

Without wanting to come across as unpleasant - have you actually looked at the two islands? Iwo Jima is smaller, sure, but in terms of actual land area the difference is less than you'd think - the thing about Christmas Island is that most of its 'land' is actually extremely saline lagoon - horrible, horrible place, unless you're a seagull.

As far as defending it - Iwo Jima is a volcanic island, about 200-250ft ASL on average, with high (if somewhat seasonal) rainfall - so you've got a constant fresh water supply wherever you are, it's practical to store what you can collect on a fairly large scale, and you can crack down into extremely hard bedrock for your caves, gun pits, storage etc.

Xmas is an arid carbonate atoll - well, there's very little rainfall, but you can actually hit fresh water just by digging down a few feet at some points, so it's not conceptually as completely arid as you might think by looking at the climate, but I suspect at this point - after hosting tens of thousands of Japanese for years - that resource would mostly have become saline; you're removing freshwater from the carbonates, basically, and that's a reservoir that recharges very slowly. Most of the island is only 10ft or so above sea level, if that, there's no fringing reef to make landings difficult, everything you build has to be at or above the surface (because anything you dig into the carbonate will flood), you can't retreat into the interior (because it's nearly all hypersaline lagoon and you'll die of thirst within a few days) and the size of it means you can't concentrate against landings effectively. It's more or less the worst place in the world to try and hold on to against an armed, pissed-off landing force and I'm astonished that it (conceptually) took as long as a week.

It didn't really take three years though, did it? I mean - the Central Pacific stuff really begins with occupations of Tarawa and Makin (Nov. 1943), then Kwajalein and Eniwetok (Feb. 1944), then the Marianas (June-Aug. 1944), then Iwo (Feb. 45), then ends with Okinawa (Apr. 45). So really you're talking a year and a half - and that's including invasions of the Palaus (Sept. 1944) and Phillipines (Oct. 44 - Mar. 45) which from a purely military point of view are probably not capital-N Necessary, just nice to have/politically useful. Given that a B-29 can do Marianas-Japan you're effectively starting to bomb Tokyo in about September 1944, which is what, ten months?

Clearly there was plenty going on in the period between Nov. 43 and Dec. 1941, but that's by the by - there's been plenty going on here, too.

OK, 18 months ... implication to the game? Think it through ..

Ok, let's look a bit closer at it (and we need to look at the game facts first here):

Christmas Island: atoll, flat and open, but a very large island without stacking limits at all. So plenty of space for digging and building a defensive installation with depth as presumably represented by a "fort level of 6".  Given the time PzB spent preparing the island, you can consider probably concrete bunkers and tough coastal defenses (though not comparable to a fixed installation, i.e. fort >=7).  Airfield and port limits 5 and 1, resp. (+3), right?  Airfields of size >4 represent more than just a single airstrip (for <=4, i.e. the bomber limit, it may be more representative of the size of a single strip), i.e. there are going to be large bases on PzBs island.

Iwo Jima: terrain type rough, a tiny island with a staking limit of 30,000 troops, 8,000 supply and 3,000 fuel; max port and airfield building limits 1 and 1 (+3). So can hold 1 airstrip with a sufficient infrastructure for 4EB.  But supply is not going to burn fast here under LBA and naval bombardment, if the IJ stations 30,000 troops here.

PzB had about ~35,000 troops, Andy brought some 66,000 party crashers (and sure these numbers alone don't tell the full combat value story). I estimated reinforcements by subsequent the battle statistics, but there is FOW and disabled recovery adding some (?) error bar.  Losses to date were (should be about all):

The difference of the subcategories to the total are landing and autobombardment losses.  There was one naval bombardment by Andy's BB's, and it was not overly destructive (363 cas. 24 destr. and 34 disabled of all categories), but relatively caused more destroyed squads than air missions.  Otherwise it strikes that despite little effect, the auto-bombardment of Andy's landings caused very significant IJ casualties (some 100 destroyed squads alone!), almost more than air, and therefore probably although lots of unnecessary disruption.  I don't believe a Japanese commander would have kept up that effort after the 1st or 2nd bloody nose full of Allied shells. Would be nice to be able to turn such wasteful stupidity off (which is true for AI also!).
Note that the aerial bombing, though comparably light due to the fact that only some 150 B29 were involved and the Allied CV strikes set in late, didn't cause large numbers of destroyed, but very significant losses in disabled squads despite the defenders being heavily fortified. I wonder what these losses would have been without forts -- that would be a interesting comparison.

Overall, the Allied losses are comparably low, which may in part be due to IJ retreat/rout.  Allied suffered 94% disabled squads, vehicles, guns (93% only squads).  This speaks for a much different medical infrastructure, and different idea of treating wounded.  Japanese suffered 55% disabled (64% squads only).  Prior to the last battle, the Allied losses with 5662 men (4267 battle) were about half the Japanese, 10,744 men (6947 battle), though. While it doesn't change Allied disablement ratios, Japaense suffered 76% disabled (78% squads only) prior to the rout. As evident from PzB's last battle report, almost half of the destroyed IJ combat squads, and almost all of the other destroyed elements are due to the last defeat, while disabled account for less than half of the total.

Now compare to some historic battles. But which mimics it best? Tarawa is surely a bad comparison -- very small atoll, very small garrison, but large yet unexperience allied assault force.   Tinian, Okinawa and Kwajelein seems to be poor comparisons either.  Especially Okinawa: just too different to extrapolate from some 1,000-20,000 men to battles involving some 150,000.  There is no simple linear scaling as we all know from the ongoing discussions.

Iwo Jima, Palau, and Guam seem to be closest matches. Iwo Jima has very different terrain and was much much smaller, but had comparable IJ preparation time. There within almost 4 weeks, of 70,000 attacking Allied soldiers some 27,000 had dropped.  Of the 22,000 well dug-in defenders, barely anyone came out alive.  So it took a lot longer, and was a lot bloodier -- longer and bloodier are linked, sure.  For the time factor, keep in mind that the examples below propably refer to the total cleaning of the island, probably not only to taking the key installations and control.  PzB may hold out a few more days, but I bet it will be less than 2 weeks in total until the last IJ troops fall.

On Guam, within some 3 weeks, 7,700 out of some 36,000 Allied landing troops, and 18,000 out of 22,000 japanese defenders made it onto the casualty lists. Guam compares well in size and terrain with Christmas Islands I guess. The Japanese are claimed to have not been heavily fortified and well-prepared there, which is supported by the relatively low allied losses.  So clearly, preparation is different and should make a huge difference, but despite that, it took the allied forces 3 weeks.

On Palau, a drawn-out battle of almost 2 months took place in which the Allied attackers suffered some 9,000 casualties (out of 21,000) and the Japanese lost basically all of their 11,000 defenders.  Palau is a little hilly, but not too small, of similar climate, and was also well prepared (as were the attackers). Force ratios are close, so it seems like a great match.  For the total force strength, multiply by 3 to get to PzBs numbers, hence also 27,000 Allied versus 33,000 japanese casualties.  Apparently, this battle for Christmas was also over much much quicker, and far less bloody.  Despite fortification, terrain and preparation being rather similar.

So all that I can conclude from this is that obviously you must picture the battle as a major surprise, say once sector of PzBs trenches and strongpoints held by a very disrupted minor formation was targeted by the Allied for a major breakthru, and suddenly gave way.  With Allied troops streaming past the line into the depth of the Japanese position, all their discipline and training went overboards and a rout ensued.  Perhaps this is a way to view it. Yet such an instance should not be too common.  Once this AAR is over, you could take the save games, change things around a bit and play the invasion a couple of time to check this.  My gut feeling says the random effects lead to a bit broad distribution of the outcomes, rather than a little more sharply peaking distribution.
Maybe it is unfortunate that we can see our AV (and without FOW, communication errors etc), which means a lot more than pure combat strength, but also represents the course of the fighting and a lot of other unforseable effects.

Nice analysis. The one thing I would say is that Christmas Island is an atoll in the game and therefore the terrain is not really comparable to Palau or Guam in that respect.

Fanning Island was hit hard a few times but engineers kept the place going; when all Allied ac concentrated on Xmas Island
I seized the opportunity to send bombers and fighters back to the island. To bad I didn't send more bombers but I expected enemy CAG to CAP Xmas.

As I see it; when a base is captured in this game it's game - set & match.
Supplies are lost, all troops are routed, all base facilities are lost.

Will take Andy only a few days to mop up the last 10k troops as you can see screen below!

Japan has many things going for her in WitP AE but this particular aspect works in the other direction.
Perhaps it's necessary to force bases to fall more quickly to enable Allies to advance on Japan...
Very very seldom do we see someone invade Japan proper, endgame after loosing on points is more usual.

Technically Iwo Jima goal was to secure islands airfields, so from game point of view, base should fall within few days, but Japanese troops should NOT be defeated, and should still keep their fortification levels, so... how to simulate that?

Have you tried shortening range of defensive bombers MGs? Nemo tried to cut their accuracy, but after halving two times without much effect, there is barely anything to cut more.

Actually, the main problem is that winner get very few permanent casualties. IRL wounded should be transported to rears, and can never recover. In-game, in two weeks, you will have most of your disabled squads operational, without ANY effort.

Our adjusted AV was 8000 while enemy was reduced from 7500 to 2200 or so.
This time I had 2 Area Army HQs and 3 Corps HQ in range, plenty supplies, rested troops but only 3 forts in a jungle base hex.

Ok we got 3000 AV left at Moulmein but plenty of reinforcements nearby.
So the questions are:

1. Should we reinforce Moulmein or leave it as is?
- My plans are to move out the depleted units and move in fresh ones and bring AV back to 3600-4000 asap.
2. Was this a mortal wound to Allied assault capabilities in Burma?

My gut feeling is that we got some time now; Andy will mull and rest his troops at least 3-4-5-6 days before attacking again.
Expecting supremely heavy air attacks before another attempt goes in, alternatively the enemy units east of Moulmein will do their move onto
the west - east railroad, but we're ready for that.

Nice! Not sure how much of a breather you've bought, but I would guess about a week. You might want to shore up Moulmein until you feel sure you can stop attacks by this stack while the rest threaten flanks to bleed off his reinforcements.

I agree, it should have held out at least 30 days if not 60. But, in the thread in MAIN there is little to no support to any change. They discount Iwo as being the exception and feel even 7 days to be too long.

Technically Iwo Jima goal was to secure islands airfields, so from game point of view, base should fall within few days, but Japanese troops should NOT be defeated, and should still keep their fortification levels, so... how to simulate that?

Don't know. I do know the implications on the game if the most heavily fortified island bases fall within 7 days.

And for those of us who play the AI and can't use HR's, it means more editting. I'm using Nemo's fix for the 4E's now: put the 500lb bombs into sticks of 4 - 8 each. Still testing on the balance yet in Downfall. Time consuming of course. And worse, very few people will ever expend this effort ...

Basically, with LBA bombardment, the allies can take any island in 7 days. So, once the allies get 2:1 naval a/c advantage (to negate the KB) how fast do you think you can take Okinawa and be bombing the HI? That stands in contrast to the 3 years it actually took.

That is the fundamental issue. Think this through and I beleive you'll see what the end result is going to be ....

Actually, the main problem is that winner get very few permanent casualties. IRL wounded should be transported to rears, and can never recover. In-game, in two weeks, you will have most of your disabled squads operational, without ANY effort.

I think you're missing my point. Walk this through, if the best defended island can be taken in 7 days, what does that mean in the game? Doesn't matter how it is taken, simply that IJ cannot hold any island for more than 7 days.

Scary thoughts Pax. Do we know why the Devs are so wedded to the auto-bombardments? It seems that was a big factor here. Is it one of the little oddities hard coded deep in the bowels of the game they just can't rip out or is it in for some other reason?
