Hi Warspite
Regarding A War of Empires, I have not gotten to it yet, but there is quite a buzz about it on Twitter from specialists in that area. The author himself is quite a good guy also.

Thank-you for the response. I am keeping this under consideration. I’ll probably take the plunge at some point based on what I’ve seen and heard.

I found an interesting book on the weekend: Flying Corps Headquarters 1914-1918 by Maurice Baring. This is the account of the hq by Baring who was a war correspondent then and took up residence in the HQ and gives a detailed account of the activity there, the campaigns involved and writings on the war. Written in an easy engaging style i found.

I like reading historical fiction. I often think that if I could have gotten rich off being a history major, that would have been my field. Which isn't to say I got rich off what I eventually decided upon, but the chances were better.
Right now, I'm reading...
5 books in a row.

Kunal Basu's 'The Japanese Wife' and other short stories are currently on my reading list. It's a collection of short stories, and I've just finished the first one. It tells the story of a Bengali man and a Japanese woman who fall in love, marry, and communicate solely through letters. I simply adored the author's depiction of an extremely complex concept in a very simple and beautiful premise.

Nope the picture has gone sadly. There is probably a way of getting her back (as others tried to explain) but its all too complicated for my small brain to figure out.

Hi - yes that's the one. Orm posted the picture in a PM this morning. I took a look at this but it all looks too confusing so I've decided to 'retire' the picture and not have one going forward. I'm
very grateful to the people who sought to help me with this though.

"A disinterested love of facts, without any regard to the bearing which those facts may have on one’s hopes or fears or destiny, is a rare quality in all ages, and it had been very rare indeed since the ancient days of Greece and Rome."

I'm reading "Case White - The Invasion of Poland 1939" by Robert Forczyk. It is an interesting book, as it begins with a summary of the story of Poland from XVI Century onwards. This immediately gives better context to the XX Century events. This book also debunks, in the intro, a lot of myths, first among all that "the Polish air force was destroyed on the ground on the first day". Historians ranging from John Keegan to Antony Beevor have considered this a fact for decades, but primary sources show how only 7% of the Polish warplanes was lost on the first day of the war (and some of them while fightning in the air).
I have reached the point when German Generals are ordered to prepare a plan for the invasion. In is a very elegant and absorbing book and I'm happy to have bought it - as I did it in a whim.
