'45 Allies is exhausting and it helps promote misplay from him.

Man am I ever discovering that to be truth. I have a large tendency to leave air squadrons on autopilot flying the same missions day after day simply because there are so damn many of them to have to issue orders to.

I'm particularly lazy with the Death Star. My bombing runs are massive overfill doing 250 runway damage because I am too lazy to want to issue orders selectively to hit more than one target at a time.

The "issue the same orders to all carrier dive/torpedo bombers in the hex" selections has become the only method I use in issuing orders to DS squadrons.

I love the "same orders to all in TF" as well. It helps differentiate if you want to change it up for a part. It is a grind, but so much fun too. In my Allied game it just feels so crazy to have the luxury of stuff like 1,400 Heavy Bombers on map at once!

The action slowed a bit on the 22nd. Only 48 Allied panes shot down to 21 Japanese.

Since June 15, when the big Allied air offensives began in the North and South, the Allies have lost almost 1,000 planes in total. My count shows 937. The Japanese are at 881 by my count during the same time period, but more of the Japanese losses are fighters. Probably 3/4 of the total. The Allies on the other hand have lost almost 200 4E and about the same number of 2E during the time. All Allied losses were over enemy held territory. A lot of pilots KIA/MIA.

Japanese pools haven't been this strong since before the Allies landed in Hokkaido in 44. I had over 100 of each of the top fighters before doing some upgrades and filling out a few groups. On top of that I'm about to upgrade a 36 plane group to the new J7W Shinden. [:)]

The Allies tried an odd raid at Hakodate. Unexscorted B-24J against the CAP. Lost almost a dozen 4E. The Allies also swept Wuchang with three different groups. The Japanese CAP broke even or won against all three. [:)]

Singers remains closed, as does Johore. All Japanese air strength in the area pushed back to Palembang.

The Allied army from Burma looks now to be pushing forward. Lang Son is captured. Now the real battle for China is on. Will the Allies try to tackle Nanning head on? Will they opt for the longer route and go around through small roads? Or along the coast toward Canton/Hong Kong? There are risks along each path. The Japanese can't defend everywhere, and I've chosen my spots.

On the 23rd things quiet down. Just some Allied milk runs. Troops moved into Johore Baru. About 2k AV of good Indian troops mostly. It looks like this could be a battle we can hold for a bit, so I'll move in another large brigade.

On the 24th a massive set of sweeps and raids goes again for Nagasaki. He does get to some industry, but the 2Es suffer especially. In the past 10 turns the Allies have now lost 1,100+ airframes.

At the bottom of this info screen you can see Allied fleets moved forward out of the Yangtze delta area where why've been now for a good while. The CVs moved out too, so this could be the next big step forward. I'd guess it's a landing on islands just off the coast of Kyushu or Korea, or both. We'll see. I get a screen tomorrow.

The Allies take some steps forward on the 25th. They drop on a number of bases around Singers and toward Palembang. It looks like they're supporting a move into the area, getting a foothold for search, etc. They also bring more troops into Johore, now up to 2,200 AV.

Up North the milk runs at Shanghai continue, and the Allies again try to bomb troop at Liuchow. The B-29s are not very effective in bad wheather against the good AA units and forts here. They is encouraging.

The Allied move that appeared to be heading toward the Home Islands or Korea has evaporated back to China. All of the ships, including the DS and company, are now back at the mouth of the Yangtze. Interesting. Another feint, and a test of air defenses.

Corsairs do get some good kills over Nagasaki. Still they get about a 3:2 advantage on the day. Not really a win for the Allies over enemy territory.

A huge set of airstrikes hit Nagasaki on the 26th. First B-29s combine to hit Manpower and the airfields at night. Then waves of sweeps, 4E and 2E bombing strikes hit during the day. The Allies get some fires going and reduce other factories with direct attacks, but the defenders again make them pay a price.

Only one set of sweeps arrives before bombers, and it is a combined set of about 4-5 groups. This helps us a lot, as the CAP was fresh after only a fairly short combat and ready to take on the bombers, including a large number of A-26B Invaders. These suffer especially but do dish out defensive fire as well.

On the day the Allies lost another 154 planes, including about 50 A-26B. This brings it to about 1,300 lost since June 15. It's hard to imagine going through this many airframes and pilots in such a short time on the Allied side. On my side I've been doing extensive pilot work to keep high experience/air skill/defensive skill pilots on the front lines, and I'm losing a lot less than the allies.

It looks like the Allies are planning to walk across and shock at Nanning. That would be interesting. I've got now a very well supported and dug in army there of 3,500 AV.

It’s really interesting to see how a well-managed Japanese air force fares against a good Allied player. Clearly there are things Canoe could do better on the strategic bombing front, but you’re certainly not making it easy on him. I’d be curious as to the Allied fighter and bomber pilot pools at this point, because it seems like attrition is ridiculously high. Assuming A-bombs are on the verge of availability, I would be afraid of using them at this stage; what happens if you shoot down the plane carrying one?

It would be interesting o make available much more to the Allies, if needed sooner after the end of operations in the ETO, and MTO, possibly at an decrease of VPs , vice PPs. I don't think it's possible to shoot down the A-bomb B-29s. They get a free shot and the skill of pilots plus the dice rolls determine the damage inflicted. I've heard, (never experienced though) that the damage is not as great as it might be if modelled on historical examples. I'm sure he's saving them for Tokyo and Osaka.

The Allies had fairly good airframe totals available when Dan took over. I don't know though what his pilot situation was at that point. I've been trying to keep a pilot quality imbalance by not losing too many massive battles and fighting most often over home territory. He's been losing a lot of pilots, both fighter and bomber. We'll see if that starts to mater, or if I can tell. [;)]

Would he get European theatre pilots too?

Not that it would ever happen. It would be interesting to see something like that, but man, the Allies have a LOT of air groups now. It might be almost overwhelming to add 1/3 more clicks into the air war.

Pretty scary when compared to the trickle of Allied replacement they get. In in the game, you are Truman, Stalin, and Churchill all at the same time so you don't have to worry about leaving anything behind in Europe.

A recent lesson for me has been that EXP levels are important for all squadrons, not just fighter pilots!

Most fighter pilots are grouped by EXP and I keep the best as top CAP in the low layered CAP. Most of the top ones for IJN go to the KB (still) and the George groups. Now also the one active J7W group, which hasn't seen combat yet.

For the IJAAF the Franks and Ki-83 get the best, but the Ki-100-II has been doing well lately against the bombers and has built some good ones. I try to keep 60-70 EXP pilots in the middle layer of the CAP and 50-60 EXP with good defensive skills in the low layers.

The NF groups across the board get 70-80 EXP pilots as well.

A ton of IJAAF bomber pilots are in the 70-85 range. I'll keep them around doing not much and use them in fighters late if that's all that's left. I could even transition them now to rear CAP (if that exists anymore) to gain air skill. Some have defense in the 80s, so would be tough if they're in Franks.

For the IJN the various strikes have taken out about half of the highest EXP pilots for TB/DB, but more are giving now as they train and fly search. Recon and transport pilots have the lowest EXP.

Pretty scary when compared to the trickle of Allied replacement they get. In in the game, you are Truman, Stalin, and Churchill all at the same time so you don't have to worry about leaving anything behind in Europe.

Soon he will get the next level P-51H and the B-17G. So a lot of those do start to flood in.

The B-29s were in the Pacific only, so what are the very heavy bombers? I don't think any B-32 were over there.

That Wiki page is for the entire USAAF, not the 8th. Thus, B-29s and B-32s make sense for "very heavy."

A big day all over the map for several reasons.

The Allies try to push forward and begin to establish some patterns I'd like to exploit as we move on. It's tough to keep a base like Shanghai closed for ever, but he's been trying both there and at Hangchow. The results is a lot of milk runs, most recently using several hundred 1E USN bombers. Hard to defend those as they're pretty fragile. I'll see if there is a good time to go for it soon. In the meantime the DB are hitting balloons and flak is getting some too.

A night attack at Hankow by B-29s is thwarted by the NF now installed there. It's interesting that although they didn't get a lot of kills, the beasts didn't hit much either. I did lose a handful of NF though in the process.

The big news is that the Allies attacked with a DA at Johore Baru. Even though it's only forts 3, the defenders are very experienced, and hold easily with a solid 1:2 (nearly a 1:3) producing heavy disablements in the Allied forces. This after several days of big bombing runs of almost 300 bombers of all types. That's encouraging. Most of the losses are to the crap garrison units and INA units, as well. I'll send a few more brigades in for the next one, reducing Singers to about 1k AV and keeping the good 33rd ID there as reserve.

A few Jakes tested the RN DS CAP again. It's looking pretty strong, nothing an LBA strike in the area can handle.

Getting up to 1,400+ airframes destroyed for the Allies since July 15 now. A lot of P-47N lost on the day, which shows in repay but not on the CR.

An interesting couple of days. Not a lot happening on the 29th, but more of the same bombing runs without a lot of sweeps coming in before. He also seems to have settled for mostly sweeps at 20k with Corsairs, and even some of the good high altitude P-47N and P-51D are flying there too. It can work better against the low CAP, but, if I change it up and go high the Allies will get jumped.

The allies send in MTBs, DEs and some xAKs to Singers. I'm thinking they were designed to clear mines the hard way, and test the defenses. Most were sunk. Maybe they were sent to Johore, since they very persistently entered the minefield and were engaged heavily by the CD guns. Either way, this shows the defences are not bad, and that are happy to sacrifice material for recon. Fine by me!! [:)]

A few APDs have been infiltrating the lower areas of the Eastern DEI. My bombers flew this turn and hit two, which is good, but the graces somehow flew 10 hexes to Darwin rather than hitting the nearby ships in several TFs. Grrr. My bad for not restricting them.

At Hangchow the 20cm guns start to show their worth, hitting the Iowas bombarding with a few good salvos. That could reduce frequency and even eventually put the BBs at risk of needing repairs. If only I could get the Wake CD unit to Shanghai!
