JohnIII...what's your take on the movie GATTACA from about 20 years ago? If you thought the Light episode of ST:TNG was good, this movie touched on similar themes. I can't watch the damn thing anymore, as I wind up crying through the ending.

Haven't thought about Gattaca in forever. Good film. Darned near have to see it to fully remember it.

April 14-18, 1944

The Japanese launch two separate major operations at secondary targets: Sorong and Ramree/Akyab. Let me review the ships used:

Here is the Sorong Force:

Carrier TF Vc-Adm Yamaguchi
5 CV, 1 CVL, 4 CA, 1 CL, 7 DD---447 Planes

Carrier TF Rr-Adm Senda
5 CV, 4 CA, 1 CL, 7 DD---379 Planes

Surface TF Rr-Adm Tanaka
3 BC (2 Kongo/1 Kawachi), 1 CL, and 5 DD

The group moves south from Saipan (Combined Fleet HQ) to the area southeast of Yap. The movement is not spotted until 16th. The TFs move south towards an area west of Hollandia. Tanaka shifts over to a bombardment and gets orders to Bombard Sorong. Four CVs shift their ZEROS to LRCAP.

Should note that 4 Daitai of Jills fly off to Guam to make space for an additional 100 ZEROS.

Those added Fighters get the chance to mix it up against a small formation of B-24s. Four of the beasts challenge 275 ZEROS. To say the least, none return to Sorong.

The bombardment unit arrives off the coast of Sorong and find nothing to oppose them. The unit delivers its ordinance and smacks the AF pretty well. They inflict 583 Cas, Airbase 33, Runway 107, and 19 planes are destroyed on the ground. The Battlecruisers retire towards Hollandia where ships exchange places with 6 CAs moving into Tanaka's command. They are ordered to hit the AF again...

From a 'beer and pretzels' perspective, Starship Troopers was a fun shoot-'em-up in its own right. Got to see some magnificent ti...title sequences. Yes. Title sequences.

The Ramree/Akyab Force is composed of:

Carrier TF Vc-Adm Nagumo
3 CV, 4 CVL, CL, and 5 DD---315 Planes

Surface TF
2 BB (Musashi/Nagato), 1 BC (Haruna), 2 CL, and 5 DD

The carriers perform double duty. About 40% of the ZEROS are assigned LRCAP over southern Burma. Another 30% is assigned to LRCAP over the Bombardment TF. The remainder fly CAP over the CVs. Yep. That is correct. The ZEROS fly 100% for 3 Days.

Over Burma the Zeros smack a number of Allied aircraft. The best total is 35 B-25 over Prome on the 15th. The Fighters account for nearly 100 Allied aircraft in exchange for losing 16 planes and only 5 pilots. Pretty good work here.

The Bombardment TF peels off and heads into Ramree. In a STUPID move, the TF sits in the hex and does NOTHING. Thankfully, nothing attacks because the entire Japanese set of TFs because they are NEVER, ever spotted by Allied aircraft. I really prayed for no attacks and, for once, Japan catches a break.

Decide that he'll move planes out so take a bigger risk and order the Bombardment TF to nail Akyab. THIS portion of the plans goes great! A TF of 2 AM and 4 AK is spanked by the BB Haruna and three of the DDs. The TF then delivers what can only be described as a fantastic bombardment. The bombardment inflicts 243 Cas, Fires are huge at 2495, Airbase 36, and Runway 72. Aircraft destroyed is over 60 planes with nearly 150 damaged (55 Liberators). NICE!

No attacks come from the air and so I decide to expend all remaining ordinance on Ramree on the 18th. This occurs without a hitch and Ramree gets some big shells and BUNCH of small shells: Cas 187, 21 Airbase, 42 Runway, and 9 planes. Not much but something.

The 18th sees all ships head for the barn in Singapore. Currently there are 1 CA, 2 CL, and 5 DDs sitting in Singers.

I love the scene where Anton (the older brother) and Vincent are doing their final swim (they play chicken while swimming further out from shore until one of them gives up and turns back). Anton asks, "How are you doing this, Vincent," who responds "I never saved anything for the swim back." Of course you need to see the film to understand that, but it's a great scene.

One of the better scenes in the movie. I usually wind up crying with the locket of hair in the card when Vincent is leaving on the rocket to the colony ship. I'm getting choked up now just thinking about it.

HR prevents it. Something to be re-examined in my next match.

Just watched John Williams get a lifetime achievement award. Steven Spielberg stated something that staggered me. He and Williams have done 27 films spanning 43 years. Damn. I do so love his music. Really hope that he can make through scoring Episode 9.

I think the thing that's most enduring about Star Wars, and really what makes it a timeless classic - is the music score.

Imagine if Star Wars was done with disco style music. It'd be laughable.

Want to imagine it? Terminator was a great movie - but the music makes it seem pretty dated.
