we are beginning our air offensive against Akyab. Obviously a very important target as we can knock out Rangoon if we can retake Akyab. Hortlund should know that, so I expect to see fighters over Akyab at some point again. At the moment there are always around 150!! fighters on CAP over Mandalay and 50 over Rangoon.

same here, most of the escorts don´t fly. This is one damned bug I´ve seen since the game came out. If you attack a base that has no aircraft (or very few) and no Cap then most times the escort just don´t take off with the bombers. THEN THE SAME SHIT LIKE IN THIS ATTACK HAPPENS: LEAKY CAP from Mandalay and even though I have set 50+ fighters / fighter bombers on escort only 16 Hurricanes are on escort duty...

a couple of those attacks and the base is closed. Soon we will start a try to wipe out the IJAAF in Burma, then I will switch half of my bombers on ground attack Akyab. With the troop numbers spotted there I expect at least an enemy brigade if not a division at Akyab.

a TF of reported 8 ships one hex North West of Port Moresby and we launch only a very small strike and have to avoid leaky cap from PM. Two B-17s lost to ops (my B-17s suffer more than the Japanese Nells and Betties that are doing daily raids from 9 hexes... [&:]) The positive thing here is that Kuri was hit by a 1000lb bomb and this could be enough to finish the small DD... it looks like this TF is heading towards Thursday Island, probably alos a supply convoy. How it was able to move that far without being spotted is again a mistery to me...

Is it really necessary to see as many rounds as it takes until every damned ship is sunk? [8|] Clearly this round went to the Japanese. It took 8 months of game time until Hortlund realized that it is necessary to escort his TFs when going to a front line base. Still the outcome was as bad as it could be, to top it off RADM Lee was killed with the last Allied DD sunk. [:(] I hate it losing ships, even though I´ve got more than enough DDs.

Hortlund asked if it would be okay if he opens a pilot training programm in China. We have a truce until mid 43 there but it´s okay with me, as it would open the airspace for my airforce also. This would mean that we would strike with our Wellingtons and Marauders deep into Japanese territory to hit HI and ressource sites from time to time. This would force Hortlund to put at least two Sentais of fighters at every base in range with big HI sites. IMO if he really wants to open the airspace in China this would be contraproductiv for him. Supply situation in China is still severe, it won´t ever get better with the supply we get there...

again, only a very small strike from Cooktown, even though we spot a big TF several times today. At least we kill the third class CL Kashii with 8x500lb bombs but I fear the Japanese will be able to unload all their supply. Guess there will be around 10.000 supplies brought in.

We lose 3 DDs (high exp for Allied, 57-60 night exp) but our LBA take revenge and sinks this CL. Still, it would have been better to send my DDs to Thursday island than Port Moresby but as I said, we didn´t spot the CLs at PM.

USS Preston (DD-379), 1936-1942
USS Preston, a 1480-ton Mahan class destroyer built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, was commissioned in October 1936. She operated in the Pacific through her entire service career, as a unit of the United States Fleet during the 1930s and early 1940s and thereafter as part of the Pacific Fleet. Following the outbreak of war with Japan in December 1941, Preston was employed on patrol and escort duties. At the beginning of June 1942 she steamed from the U.S. west coast to Hawaii and operated in that area until October 1942. She was then transferred to the south Pacific to join the Guadalcanal campaign. Late in October, she participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands as an escort for U.S. aircraft carriers.

A few weeks later, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Preston was one of four destroyers attached to a task force built around the battleships Washington (BB-56) and South Dakota (BB-57). Sent into Guadalcanal's Iron Bottom Sound on the night of 14-15 November 1942, the U.S. destroyers engaged a force of Japanese cruisers and destroyers south of Savo Island. In this short and intense action, Preston was fatally damaged by enemy shellfire and quickly sank, with the loss of over one hundred of her crew. However, within a few minutes the U.S. battleships fought other Japanese warships, successfully thwarting a potentially devastating bombardment of U.S. forces on Guadalcanal and thus effectively ending enemy hopes of retaking the island.

the second sweep encounters some IJA fighters though. Unfortunately my more exp. squadrons were put together to fly in the first sweep. Nevertheless we achieve a 20:10 in kills today. We lose 9 British pilots though, this is severe with a replacement rate of 30. But due to lack of US fighter squadrons in India we have to also rely on the British but I fear in the next couple of months we will run out of British pilots (some 220 are still in the pool at the moment). With 25 Spitfire Vb coming online in 8/42 we have at least the possibility to upgrade two or three of my best British fighter sqadrons to Spits. Once again, the Warhawks proved to be extremely deadly. I think the Warhawks alone shot down 8-10 Oscars for no loss of their own. So the kill rate of the Hurricanes was 1:1. The Warhawk pilots are still in the mid 60s while the Hurricanes are nearing 70 on average with my best squadron at 75. As Burma is the only place where I can use my short legged fighters this will be the place to attrit the Japanese and force them to bring in more fighters from other fronts (or they will simply lose Burma). Thank god I finally had 72 Mohawks in the pool and I was able to downgrade a FG of P-40 so this means I have now some 80 P-40s in the pool for the upcoming fight in Burma. In India we have some 190 Warhawks that will see more action soon.

I have no idea how far the Japanese are with building up of forts but I fear they have already reached a high level. But they won´t get any further in the future and as soon as the back of the IJA in Burma is broken we will start daily bombings of Akyab. Hopefully Hortlund will bring more troops, this place will just become a big IJA prison camp. The retreat on the jungle trails to Rangoon takes at least 2 months.

leaky Cap from Gili Gili but this doesn´t stop our bombers, nor does it really disrupt them. I can´t say exactly what happened during the attack (as my combat report seemed to be out of synch [:@] - all was the same but the hits on the ships). Couple of ships are obviously in trouble. Tomorrow we will venture in with our carriers again. There are a lot of Helens on Gili Gili, all set to naval search or ASW patrol as my subs are again hit daily. There´s no place anymore where IJA bombers are used for airfield, port or ground attack so I guess they are all [8|] on anti sub duty now... [8|][8|] Port Moresby has no bombers and there´s a big CAP over Gili Gili. So if there will be a strike from Gili Gili against my carriers then it won´t have many escorts and my Cap should deal with the incoming bombers. Leaves Lae as possible base that could launch a long range strike.

As a side note, 80%+ of the damaged or sunk subs are hit by aircraft...

after our airfield strike we sent a sweep to engage the IJA fighters that were being alerted. Unfortunately, the Hurricane once again proves to be a piece of chunk compared to the Oscar. Even though those are my most experienced pilots (mostly 70+) the Hurricanes are absolutely helpless against the IJA fighters. When the Tojo will show up in late 42, there´s no way to use Hurricanes anymore. As bad as the Hurricane performs, as well is the Warhawk performing (with less exp pilots). I guess the P-40 achieved a kill rate better than 5:1 and this is absolutely amazing. Lots of the damaged aircraft were lost but in the end we achieve a positive kill rate (30:31 in A2A). Looking at the pilots, we lost 5 Warhawk pilots and 17 Hurricane pilots. What is surprising again is the fact that Hortlund moved out all his fighters from Mandalay, pulling them back to Rangoon. So either he´s planning something or 1:1 losses are something he doesn´t like. Mandalay has some 60.000+ reported troops so I guess it´s full of AA regiments and base forces, probably the best defended base on the map. Perhaps I will try a high level attack at some point but I´m not sure it´s worth it.

A 5:1 kill rate with at least 13 IJN pilots that didn´t return, something I can surely live with, especially as the USN pilots are coming in at 60 exp, compared to all other pilots with max 55 exp... 8 out of 9 Betties turned back due to low morale, escaping their death...

this tiny strike is all we get in the afternoon... [8|] In the end, we take down 15 IJN pilots and sink 4 medium sized APs (with another one probably in sinking condition) and a MSW. damn it! We´re begging on the forum to see our bombers not killing theirself against CV or land based Cap when there are other targets in range. So far unheard, but it seems Hortlund is able to do exactly this! [:D] In the morning thoses Betties turn back due to low morale and escape. In the afternoon, instead of again attacking my CVs, they go after the single DD 6 hexes West of Gili Gili... [8|] the DD is dead of course... I have to rethink those surface raids in this area as I´m not really willing to take those losses for nothing... either because my DDs suffer from round after round against CLs or due to super short engagements when I send in a superior ship. Lost 4 DDs in a week for one AK sunk, a DD and a CL damaged. That isn´t acceptable...

at least the sacrifice of our B-25 made this attack possible. Amazing hit rate out of a sudden. Must have been my best pilots today. All AKs are dead, two sunk outright. No supply for Thursday island. Must have been LRCAP from Port Moresby as recon shows no fighters at Thursday island and only a very small Cap was seen at Port Moresby... It´s a shame that exactly today the airfield strike went off, when it´s the first day of Cap over Thursday Island. This strike has been ordered since a week...

31st Heavy AA Battalion is loaded on AP,Meisho Maru moving to Gili Gili.

I think I already got a dozen messages of AA battalions being moved on ships somewhere. If we take all the AA batalions and regiments where I don´t get intel about... [8|] Gili Gili is absolutely a flak base already, nevertheless more and more AA regiments are brought to the front. What Nikmod absolutely needs are stacking limits for units with AA guns! This gets ridicoulos. 90% of my bombers (125 attacking) were damaged with 20 being lost (attack height 11.000) over Thursday Island (I also got intel about an AA regiment being loaded moving to Thursday Island). I know the old story about people filling up bases with a lot of units don´t have units elsewhere but this is just BS as my opponent just doesn´t need AA regiments at Lunga, Rabaul, Truk, Lae or wherever in this region, HE NEEDS THEM AT THREE BASES AND THERE ARE DOZEN OF UNITS WITH AA GUNS... If there are perhaps 80 AA battalions or regiments the Japanese player can place 4 on 20 important bases and there are most certainly never more than 20 bases being front line bases that have to be defended. At the moment there are 3 on Timor, 3 on New Guinea and 3 in Burma. Makes a total of 9 bases that have to be defended by flak guns. Easily enough AA btn around and then there are another 200 base forces...[8|] Before a base will fall it´s easy to take back your AA btn and place them one base further back, so I guess flak will be the main problem for me for the entire campaign. Flak war in the Pacific...[8|]

I would guess it would be better to increase the ability of fighters to take down a bomber while the flak has to be definetely toned down. It´s absolutely "a bit" off the way if flak is 5-7 times more effective than fighters are. I doubt Japanese flak was that strong, nor Japanese fighters that weak. Of course stacking limits could at least somewhat increase the situation. While Hortlund surely enjoys it seeing 2 complete bomber groups being shot up after just one attack, I have already limited myself in my game against Swift to no more than 2 or 3 AA btn at major bases.

Akyab has a daitai of Vals now, probably to attack my subs in this area (very few of them) and to attack my MSW (none are left in the area). What is interesting is the fact that there are several IJN subs spotted in this area now. This smells like a resupply mission going to Akyab, perhaps also some troops being brought in. This could fit to the fact that all the IJA/IJN fighters left Mandalay earlier. They are all sitting at Rangoon now. We will increase our naval search aircraft.

CL Tama isn´t 500lb bomb prove. The Japanese fighters once again fail to take down big numbers of bombers but again I have over 80% damaged. Morale of all involved bombers is near the bottom of course and the repair rate of B-17s is somewhere around 3 a day, means those bombers will be repaired in 2,5 weeks again. Some 40 Mitchells and 30-35 B-17s operational left on the North East coast of Australia. Even though we sunk the CL the attack on Thursday island (4 runway hits, 20 bombers shot down and 80 damaged) and this attack means we have now only around 70 operational bombers left out of 300. [8|] Today 8 bombers were lost, which means this would be somewhere near a disaster in real life (not to talk about nearly all the rest being damaged) but losing the CL surely depressed Hortlund (as I see in his email) but even in stock, this ship would have been sunk by this high number of bombers. Loss rate of bombers would be around 30 though.

IJN CL Tama was sunk off Thursday Island by USAAF bombers! [:)]

Tama was the second of five vessels in the Kuma-class of light cruisers. As with its sister ships, it was intended for use both as a long-range, high speed scout ship, and also as a command vessel for destroyer or submarine flotillas.


Service life
Tama was completed at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki shipyard on 29 January 1921. Immediately after commissioning, Tama was assigned to cover the landings of Japanese troops in Siberia during Japan's Siberian Intervention against the Bolshevik Red Army.

In 1925, Tama was tasked with making a diplomatic voyage to San Pedro in the United States, to return the remains of US Ambassador to Japan, who had died in Tokyo. In 1932, with the Manchurian Incident, Tama was assigned to patrol the northern coasts of China, from its base in Taiwan. However, as the war in China continued to escalate, Tama was involved in operations to cover the landings of Japanese troops in central China.

On 10 January 1935, the German naval attach¨¦ in Tokyo, Captain Paul Wenneker was invited by Admiral Nobumasa Suetsugu to tour Tama, Kongo and submarine I-2 at Yokosuka Navy Base. Wenneker was reportedly unimpressed with Japanese naval artillery, and advocated increase use of submarine warfare. [2]


Northern operations
On 10 September 1941, Tama became flagship of Vice Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya's CruDiv 21 with the light cruiser Kiso, in the Japanese 5th Fleet. Tama and Kiso were sent north to Hokkaid¨­, in Arctic white camouflage, on 2 December 1941, and were patrolling in the Kurile Islands, at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Both cruisers' hulls were damaged by severe weather, and both returned to dry dock at Yokosuka by the end of the year.

On 21 January 1942, CruDiv 21 departed Yokosuka and was again sent north on patrols around Hokkaid¨­, but was recalled after 38 aircraft of US Task Force 16 (USS Enterprise (CV-6)) made a dawn raid on Marcus Island on 5 March 1942. Tama was assigned to the Japanese 1st Fleet with the Hyuga and Ise, and sortied from Hashirajima to search for Admiral William F Halsey, but failed to locate his forces after several weeks of searching.

On 5 April 1942, CruDiv 21 returned to northern waters, but on 18 April 1942 the Doolittle Raid struck targets in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya and Kobe. Tama was again recalled to join in another unsuccessful pursuit of Halsey. For the rest of April and most of May, Tama resumed its northern patrols.

On 28 May 1942, Tama departed Mutsu Bay to participate in the "Operation AL" (the seizure of Attu and Kiska) in the Battle of the Aleutian Islands. After successfully landing forces to seize the islands, CruDiv 21 returned to Mutsu Bay on 23 June 1942. However, Tama was quickly sent back to cover the second reinforcement convoy to Kiska, then patrolled southwest of Kiska in anticipation of an American counter-attack until 2 August 1942. After a brief return to Yokosuka for maintenance, Tama covered the transfer of the Attu garrison to Kiska. On 25 October 1942, CruDiv 21 embarked further reinforcements at Kashiwabara, Paramushiro to Attu. Tama continued to patrol the Aleutians and the Kurile islands and around Hokkaido until 6 January 1943, making another supply run to Kiska in November.

After refit at Yokosuka in early February 1943, Tama again patrolled north from Ominato to Kataoka (Simushir island), to Kashiwabara (Paramushiro) to 7 March 1943. Another major supply run to Attu was made from 7 March to 13 March 1943.

On 23 March 1943, Tama departed Paramushiro towards Attu with Vice Admiral Hosogaya's Fifth Fleet cruisers Nachi and Maya, light cruiser Abukuma and destroyers Ikazuchi, Inazuma, Usugumo, Hatsushimo and Wakaba escorting a three-ship reinforcement carrying troops and supplies for the garrison on Attu. At the Battle of the Komandorski Islands on 26 March 1943, against USN Task Group 16.6 with the USS Richmond (CL-9), USS Salt Lake City (CA-25) and four destroyers, in a four-hour running gun and torpedo battle, the Salt Lake City and the USS Bailey (DD-492) were damaged by gunfire. The other destroyers were not damaged. Tama was undamaged, but Nachi was hit several times; however, the Japanese aborted the resupply mission, and returned to Paramushiro on 28 March 1943. Disgraced by retreating from an inferior force, Hosogaya was relieved of command and forced to retire. Vice Admiral Shiro Kawase assumed command of the Fifth Fleet.

Tama remained on guard duty at Kataoka for over a month and then was sent to Maizuru for a refit on 4 May 1943. It was thus absent during the "American Operation Landcrab" to retake the Aleutian Islands, and during Japanese evacuation of Kiska on 19 May 1943. Returning to Kataoka only on 23 May 1943, the Tama resumed guard duties until 5 July 1943. During ¡°Operation Ke-Go" (the evacuation of Kiska) on 7 July 1943) Tama's engines were considered too unreliable for her to participate directly in the evacuation, and it remained behind at Paramushiro. In any event, the mission was aborted due to weather. Tama remained on guard duty in the Kuriles until 30 August 1943.


Operations in southern waters
After a refit at Yokosuka, Tama was sent south with troops and supplies for Ponape, Caroline Islands on 15 September 1943. After stopping by Truk, and returning to Kure, the Tama was ordered to Shanghai on 11 October 1943, to ferry additional troops to Truk and Rabaul, New Britain. After disembarking the reinforcements at Rabaul, Tama was attacked by RAAF Bristol Beaufort bombers from Guadalcanal on 21 October 1943. The Tama's hull plates were damaged by near-misses and it was forced return to Rabaul for emergency repairs.

On 27 October 1943, Tama returned to Yokosuka for a major refit, Its Nos. 5 and No.7 140-mm guns were removed along with its catapult and derrick. A twin 127-mm HA gun was fitted, as were four triple mount and six single mount Type 96 25-mm AA guns. This brought Tama's total number of 25-mm guns to 22 barrels (4x3, 2x2, 6x1). A type 21 air search radar was also fitted. Repairs and modifications were completed on 9 December 1943.

Tama departed Yokosuka 24 December 1943, again for northern waters and remained on patrol to 19 June 1944. Returning to Yokosuka by 22 June 1944, Tama then starts to ferrying army reinforcements to the Ogasawara islands, making two runs to 12 August 1944.

On 30 August 1944, Tama was transferred from CruDiv 21, Fifth Fleet to become flagship of DesRon 11, Combined Fleet, replacing the lost Nagara.


Battle of Leyte Gulf
During the Battle of Leyte Gulf (20 October 1944), Tama was assigned to Vice Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa Northern Mobile ("Decoy") Force. During the Battle off Cape Engano (25 October 1944), Ozawa's force was attacked by American Task Force 38, with the USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Essex (CV-9), USS Intrepid (CV-11), USS Franklin (CV-13), USS Lexington (CV-16), USS Independence (CVL-22), USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24), USS Langley (CVL-27), USS Cabot (CVL-28) and the USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). Tama was attacked by TBM Avenger torpedo-bombers from VT-21 of the Belleau Wood and VT-51 from the San Jacinto. A Mark 13 torpedo hit the Tama in her No. 2 boiler room. After emergency repairs, the Tama retired from the battle, escorted by the Isuzu, but the Isuzu was ordered to protect the damaged aircraft carrier Chiyoda. The Tama was then escorted by the destroyer Shimotsuki, but later the Shimotsuki too was ordered to assist the damaged carrier Zuiho. Tama proceeded alone at 14 knots towards Okinawa.

Northeast of Luzon, Tama's luck ran out, as the USS Jallao (SS-368), on her first war patrol, picked up the Tama on radar. Its attack of three bow torpedoes from 1,000 yards missed, but its second salvo of four stern torpedoes from 800 yards was more successful. Three torpedoes hit Tama, breaking it in two, and sinking it within minutes, with all hands at 21¡ã23¡äN 127¡ã19¡äE / 21.383, 127.317.

Tama was removed from the Navy List on 20 December 1944.
