Sangeli, he'll have a lot of battleships in the yards for a while... It is almost april 1945.. It is an OK result, not to mention that I have traded the troops at Truk for around 300 vehicles and 1.5 of divisions worth of troops (intel indicates around 1800 squads and vehicles destroyed)... And he hasn't dropped the forts yet (and is massively overstacked) so it might get a bit worse before it gets better for him....

This might concern him a bit... Mundy has the two carrier groups covering the operation but his cover is not perfect and I managed to sneak in a fast battleship detachment... (bit risky but with a bit of luck I managed to avoid being detected entirely....)

This turn they catch up with the retreating allies lacking any kind of decent surface support (expending all ammo on the island). Over 200 fighters are on CAP duty from the operational airfield...

He pulled his support TFs out of dodge too quickly and now he is losing troop ships he can't afford to lose. His odds went from 1-2 to 1-4 this turn and since he has been unable to lower the forts, still 8 he will have to wait until supplies are exhausted for the Japanese and rest his disrupted troops.

I've been able to reinforce with most of a brigade by air (taking pretty heavy losses in transports...). My AV is back up to 300... If he stays sloppy I might be able to move in a FT taskforce carrying more fresh infantry....

He is also heavily overstacked so burning through supply fast.. That might force him to run the CD gauntlett

The 49th Brigade is now defending Truk in strength... The original garrison is pretty beat up and trying to recover some losses. AV is around 330 (original 500) against 1900 allied (original 3100)... The allied losses are severe and they are still overstacked in a big way.

Both large carrier TFs are now circling Truk with at least one strike on the ground troops in the AM phase..

The allies effectively bombard Truk using CAs, CBs and BBs... The airfield (I just flew in around 150 fighters, bad timing) takes a pounding and 50+ aircraft are destroyed and another 50 left behind in the retreat...

For some reason Mundy lands two baseforce groups (mistake?) and that only adds to the stacking limit... Another allied assault is beaten back. Around 2500 allied squads and vehicles are now destroyed.... Perfect defensive circumstances for the ground troops...

It's almost certainly the infantry regiments and battalions that are the cause of many destroyed squads. They get chewed up in heavy battles even worse than marine defense battalions. I have since stopped bringing units smaller than a brigade to such battles unless it doesn't put me over the stacking limit.

And I think everyone is really curious what KS can do late war. But slowing down the Soviets enough may be too much even for him...

It is not just the small units although those are the most vulnerable (so high casualties from those units in the first two attacks).. Mundy kept attacking trying to defeat my tiring troops.. He probably did so with divisions with a high ratio of disabled squads.. That in combination with high fort levels translates into extra ordinary attacker casualties

I am sure of this since fresh brigades I moved in took disablements but almost no destroyed squads.. The units I had at Truk took heavy casualties in destroyed squads since they already had high disablement..

If you simplify it, it might work like this: Unit selection -> Fire on devices (prioritise healthy squads).

Japanese surface ships manage to intercept one of the large carrier taskforces that is stationed near Truk... The results are not good, radar ensures early detection and a range of 4000 yards (torpedo's all miss) but I'm hoping it scares him a bit.. The tasforce escapes but is detected just outside range of Mundy.. Mundy might try to intercept but I'll be able to move A: out of range or B: Under an air umbrella that should put a very big dent in anything that is sent in to strike back...

I would characterize it differently. What I've seen is that attacking units get thrown into the fray and enemy units fire at it and do damage regardless of the size of the unit. Disabled squads act as a buffer of some sort. A unit with lots of squads can take a lot of damage and only generate disablement. But a small unit will quickly burn through disablements and then disabled squads start being turned into destroyed. Though I think overstacking also changes this as well. I have seen units that are not fully disabled take significant destroyed squads with overstacking.

Can't say I'm a big fan of your TF composition here. I think if you removed the BB Kirishima it would make it easier for those Long Lances from CAs to find their mark. Also, I think sending BBs in like this is just too risky...these sorts of dangerous jobs are best down by cruisers or even just destroyers.

As far as I know the presence of a battleship among those cruisers does not affect the long lance operation. I checked and around 60% of the torpedoes in the taskforce got fired (range 4k).. Hitting a warship from 4k requires a lot of luck.. Hits start to become more common from around 2k...

With regards to risk, that is fair enough however I watched the movement patterns used by Mundy over a turn or 7 and I've never been more certain about getting away with something ...

Mundy has pulled back all his shipping from Truk to Ponape and beyond.. Let's see what comes next. Navy bombers will pay the Truk besiegers a visit next turn...

I confess not to be an expert on such matters but people on the forums have often said to keep BBs separate from cruisers. Maybe that isn't the case....I don't know.

I confess... He kept his TF in the same place for 4 days straight and I had a destroyer TF at 8 hexes to test out of he spotted me.... It is not rocket science.

He is getting a bit desperate (?) at Truk... Another assault and he manages to drop fort level by 1 but the odds are terrible and the losses even more so.... He also is now showing a - on supply... He'll have to act or his stack is in trouble....

Maybe he's just trying to reduce his stacking penalty by sending his soldiers to the grave? In any case, he reduced the fort level and took fewer disabled squads than you. It's actually pretty good progress if you look at it in the right light. Though the supply malus is definitely very concerning...those guns will take a heavy toll on any resupply mission.

That is a very positive attitude but this is the battle for Truk... Dropping the fort level with one at a cost of around 2800 squads and vehicles is not good progress.. The disablements for now are not a problem, I've moved in two reserve brigades and AV is back up.... He needs escort carriers or I'll be able to reinforce again... Supply at Truk is at 130k

Here a picture from my point of view... His best division now shows less then 200 AV. All of his supporting units are at 0 due to fatigue, disruption and losses... He can't hope to recover this mess while being so massively overstacked..

He probably expected to take the base quickly so he brought base troops... At the least he should extract those and some of the most heavily damaged units...

Due to the rest we are having at Truk I've recovered nicely on spend units... AV is up to 500... Mundy stands at 1200 (coming from over 3k)..

I am playing the allies myself in another game and if I would try to take Truk I think I would go in not higher then double the stacking limit and prepare to extract and replace tired units.... But that Fortress is a major pain in the ass....
