I think that he was expecting my CVs to return there and timed the minefield to coincide with when he thought the CVs would be returning. The CVs did not return to Rabaul. However, the amphibious group did and Tatsuta took a mine.

Indeed I've been expecting them returning to Rabaul. The minefield was laid Feb 5th., timing has been just right but supposed KB move was utterly wrong.

In Sumatra, the allies have formed a redoubt at Padang. Lillies and Anns from Palembang and Johore Batu have gone in several times to bomb unescorted. One of the units present is a British Aviation unit, so I suspected that Bob may shift a few fighters up from Java to try to catch the unescorted bombers. The ground strike for the 6th was called off, and recon showed that indeed, Bob did send a flight of fighters up. A sweep by a detachment from Commander Kato's 64th Hayabusa squadron was ordered for the 7th.

Kato was not in command. This is the detachment, which was upgraded to Oscar Ics on Dec. 7th. Kato is still in command of the 64th itself, which is flying the 1bs and has been mostly escorting bomber raids over Singapore. Kato has recorded 2 kills, however. The first was a Buffalo on a Dec. 7th in a fighter sweep over Georgetown, and the second was an allied bomber over central Malaysia.

The action heats up in South China, where a Japanese stack is moving toward Wenchow. A large strike was ordered to support the advance on Wenchow, including 75 Sallies, 27 lillies, and 24 Sonias.

In the Phillipines, several air strikes from Sallies, Anns, and Sonias operating off Clark Field is followed up by an attack against the isolated remnants of the Luzon army east of Manila. The allied unit perform remarkably well. It appears they have reached the 0 supply threshold, but hold out valiantly.

In China, elements of 4 small Chinese corps cut off in the Chinese plain by the pincer movement on Nanyang hold off an SNLF dispatched to mop them up. The SNLF had to cross a river to initiate the attack, but my congregation of forces on Loyang opened up a supply path to these units briefly. I was surprised to see them in supply, and the SNLF paid the price.

I like how the game handles land supply. The only objection that I have is how slowly units disintegrate after reaching 0 supply. They should fall apart within a week or so, rather than hanging on for months, which they often do.

Unlike most people, I do not view the "China" problem as one of the supply available to the Chinese. In point of fact, the Chinese had little supplies and of the estimated 4 million Chinese who died in the war, the majority died for lack of medical supplies and even starvation. The "China" problem is actually a problem with the garrisons. The Japanese can handle their garrison requirements in China with puppet units almost exclusively. This was not the case at all. Large portions of the Japanese army were tied down in maintaining control of the roads and the countryside. The garrison requirements in China for Japan should be much higher. That would solve the "China problem" in my opinion and make it more accurate to the historical challenge that Japan faced in launching offensives in China.

As an aside, the other problem in China is the enormous number of disabled squads that China has. These consume supply but contribute nothing. In fact, per the manual, units with large numbers of disabled squads consume more supply than units without disabled squads. Many of these squads should be considered "destroyed" for the purposes of game engine in the at-start setup.

I much don't like or don't understand why "supply" run through territory aka hex that has been occupied previously by the opposing side, if he's not maintaining an active unit in that hex, as happened to you in the circumstance you described above.

Once conquered, the hex is-should be- mine!

I like that hexsides can be controlled after moving through them in disputed hexes, but hexes cannot, because it forces players to maintain a coherent line. Keep in mind that the amount of supply that a unit receives depends upon the path that the supply must take to get to the unit. So, if you control road hexes and railway hexes, for example, and force supply to flow to units through difficult terrain, supply will be lost in transit and the units will often be under-supplied.

I realize now that, in this instance, he was probably receiving supply from Wenchow, which would be producing an excess sufficient to supply those unit.

Most players believe that there is a "problem" in China, in that, with a focused effort, Japan can conquer most of China, at least as far as Chungking, whereas in the actual war, Japan did not. I don't view this as a serious problem, unlike most players. My position is that Japanese units in China were under-supplied throughout the war, and Japan did not make China a focus. Most Japanese players in this game do, and therefore they use much more supply in China than Japan actually did historically. The use of large amounts of supply in China means that fewer bases that can be expanded, less fortifications can be built, less air missions can be launched, and so forth, in other theaters. It is also, in my opinion, why many Japanese players find that supply, rather than fuel, is the crippling limitation on Japan's economy in the later game.

China is not a "critical" theater in my opinion, because as every allied player can attest, supply flows poorly through central China. Therefore, China is not the best location from which to begin an attack on the Home Islands. The allies are better served moving through the DEI and the Phillipines and SoPac and CentPac. Again, this is my opinion. There are a few instances where the allies had some limited success pressuring Japan from China, but these are exceptions and not the norm.

This is not to say that I am going to ignore China in this game or any game. It is just that I take a different view of China than most JFBs. Just because I can conquer the whole of China does not mean that I must conquer the whole of China. With a highly focused effort from day 1, I could probably conquer all of Australia as well. Does that mean I must conquer all of Australia while the allies reinforce the DEI? No, absolutely not.

Two TFs were struck. The first was a minelaying TF at Tjilatjap and the 2nd was a TF of small cargo ships at Soerabaja. The majority of the high-value ships fled Java long ago. It appears that Bob left a number of small cargo ships at Java to load up whatever supplies were not needed as the Japanese approached to either flee with these supplies or deny me access to the surplus. He tried something similar at Hong Kong. Whatever the case, there was a great deal of sound and fury, but it did not signify much.

Recon of the ports at Soerabaja and Batavia has been recording the presence of 15 or 20 ships at both Soerabaja and Batavia for weeks, but I have not bothered with port strikes. I assumed that it was mostly just small, inconsequential cargo ships. It seems that I was correct. I think Bob may have been trying to use them as bait for CAP traps over Batavia and Soerabaja as well, but I am not certain.

On the Phillipines, the remnants of the PA continue to fight tenaciously east of Manila despite being completely surrounded and without supply.
