I live in Northern Illinois; we were supposed to get 88% coverage. Weather was mostly cloudy in general, and during the peak time of the eclipse we couldn't see anything. 
But there were some clear moments about a half hour before and after, so I saw about 2/3 of the sun covered going in and about 1/2 going out. Not bad, and in view of the weather anything at all was pretty good. It was very strange to see a crescent sun.

When I was somewhat younger, but still not young, I had a wicked stepmother. When I told her I played wargames she thought that meant I ran around in the woods with a paintball gun. One of her previous husbands, whose portrait in oil was omnipresent, had worked for Admiral Rickover, so therefor she knew everything about everything, naturally.
