My troops look to alll reach the x3 terrain blockade point just outside Sian. I hope these troops can hold for a few bloody attacks, but who knows at this stage with Allied firepower as it is. They're digging in now.

This is probably my best IJN fighter group, which has been defending at Hakodate and on Hokkaido throughout. A lot of golden boys here, and the Allies will find it difficult to get a good VP score if I can keep them in N1K5s.

Resources and supplies are dropping quickly now. At this rate I think I'll be out by the end of 45.

Hard lessns to learn when you see 45 every 4-5 years! Makes it tough to learn and get it right. This time I'm suffering for resources, not fuel. Maybe the key is that it'll always be something. There is no perfect Japanese endgame economy. [;)]

He has still not bombed either Tokyo or Osaka. Can't figure that out. A few strikes to each of those and I'd be running on fumes for sure. It's interesting what the Allies can't see and don't know unless they've been on this side.

I'm beginning to withdraw all excess air units and I've turned off replacements for units on the Home Islands long ago. Might even withdraw some engineers and other less needed units now. Anything to save.

The Allies turn their 4Es on the bases I nKorea, including the big one at Fusan. Taking out a level 9 airbase next to the Home Islands should be dangerous, and the Allies do suffer some losses, but their mix of sweeps and B-29s massed in one day is too much for the staunchest of defenses. These were not our top groups. A lot of training groups and obsolete fighters. Fusan is demolished and the Allies burn 350+ planes to about 200+ of their own lost. Yuck.

All troops are moving back in order, and there is no place the Soviets can halt the process to cut them off before they reach Korea. That's good at least.

The FR-1 Fireball makes it appearance. Wow.

These weren't the best groups I have, firstly, but it's also that I've setup for low-layered CAP to focus on frustrating the P-47/P-51 high sweeps. The planes that can fly fast with high maneuver at low altitudes (like the Spit and Corsair) do much better. I think the Fireball is in this category but I'd have to look at the stats.

The Allied sweeps are tough right now with the addition of better Corsairs, Fireballs, Bearcats, plus now the P-51H. Some have trouble one turn or another, but overall he's mixing it up enough to get about 3:1 with 2/3 of the sweeps. I'll not be able to defend the air in Korea except occasionally.

The B-29s try a very high raid on Nagaoka which yields very few hit for the number of bombers involved and also results in the loss of a handful to the Nf, which seem able to get up in time to 25k with their radar.

Bombardments at Keijo have been devastated by the defensive counterfire so far, but the Soviets have more moving in. All retreats are going steadily toward Kanko, but shouldn't all reach there for another 10-12 days. Until then I'll have about 3.5k AV at Keijo in 1-2 days, 3k AV at Genzan with another 1k AV in each of the two x3 terrain hexes between, which are hard to reach from the West side of the peninsula.

I'm flying some troops to Anking as some Allied troops are showing interest in this little yellow road. Other forces are moving up from Chungking. Those near Sian will stay until pushed back.

For what it's worth, the Ki-94-II is now researching. If made, this will be a very limited run of production. It'd be cool to use and see how tit works, but the Allies will have jets by then too, so it'll be a moot point.

They definitely will not stand up to P80As.

In my Ironman game the AI got them early so I had to face them with lesser planes, but the AI also got so many models beyond the KI-94-IIs that they really didn't stand out.

I think it was you who made a statement recently somewhere that the Allies will never get an air frame that can maneuver with the more maneuverable Japanese planes. I immediately thought, "Oh yeah, wait until he gets a look at the FR-1. Then I actually looked up the maneuver rates of some of the Japanese air frames and was immediately sobered. Even the Fireball, which has the highest low level maneuver ratings of any Allied air frame, doesn't come close to matching that of the Japanese air frames.

However, even though it doesn't achieve the maneuver ratings of the Japanese air frames, the FR-1 is a tough customer with excellent speed and climb rate. The build rate is fairly low allowing a small number of squadrons to be converted to it.

The low-layered CAP is kind of like the MiG-17 tactics in the Vietnam war against the USAAF. Low and slow, but with a lot of bait and shoot teams.

Spits are the ultimate tool against this tactic since they can do it all; speed, maneuver and firepower. Just not always the range the Allies need.

Here is a look at the three new USN airframes in relation to the Spit VIII, which is the best for mid-level sweeps against the low-layered CAP. The Fireball certainly has the best manoeuvre to combat this tactic, matched with its good speed and durability. It's guns are suspect, with only the 4 x 50cal MG, wing mounted.

The F4U-4, which being a speed upgrade, has reduced manoeuvre from the F4U-1D, which has been the best sweeper at mid-altitudes.

The Bearcat is very good all around, and has done well so far.

I'm lucky the Fireball comes in low production numbers!

The Allies begin to attempt a cull of Japanese fighters in Central China at Wuchang. This base and Hankow are used together, but it won't be long before the bombers come and I'll need to evacuate. That's really fine though now as I've done what I need to ensure units get into the x3 to try and form blocks in the mountains surrounding the Central Plains.

The Allies begin a slow march across the SRA taking out Soerabaja. This area has only stragglers now from other captured bases, and I'll attempt to make Balikpapan a last stand base since it has plentiful supply and must be invaded amphibiously.

All ships now moving toward Babeldaob and up through to the Home Islands. The vast majority will make it and deliver the goods right up until the beginning of October it looks like. That's icing on the economic cake for sure. [8D]

Troops have now moved into Genzan, and some appear to be moving across country to the hexes between Genzan and Keijo. My forces are there but I need another week to really flecsh those blocking points out. They should get 1k AV each to start, then another 1k AV each once the troops coming from Mukden arrive shortly thereafter. I've got tanks racing from the Rashin area to fill in as well now, and I'll be sending a few free IDs and tank brigades from Honshu to provide emergency reserve in Korea. I'll also begin to send in some small naval guards to hold the unoccupied coastal hexes to dissuade any 'Inchon' style landings.

The Allies close Hankow after numerous effective sweeps and bombing strikes.

Somehow also they try for Keijo fields but sweeps seem not to fly. The B-29s arrive first and it's a massacre! Shot down 30+ today. Nice.

The Allies continue to sweep in Hokkaido and suffer 1:1 altogether against our top IJN groups.

Tension falls but Genzan bombardments yield horrible results so far for the Allies, which is a great sign for the defending possibilities here in spite of the massive firepower advantage the Allies will have.

The Allies had been steadily building up at Keijo, but I hadn't realised how much until this turn. I knew the base would be safe for a while with its heavy urban defensive terrain and level 6 forts, and I've also been getting as much as possible into the hex. The Allies decided to test their luck without any ground, naval or air bombardments. They did reduce forts to 5, but in spite of getting 10k AV+ [X(][X(] of very good late war Soviet troops into the base, they ended up getting a 1:11 with massive casualties.

Almost 800 Allied devices were destroyed outright, with another 2,000+ disabled. This is about the best I could have hoped for here, and even with reduced forts, it will be tough in the next few for the Allies without a lot of prep time and bombardments. That should give time to strengthen nearby positions and dig in.
