Once I have enough bombers online in India and USA I'll have my B-17Es transfer to Rangoon, beef up the fighter defence of Rangoon and begin mounting 100+ bomber raids out of Rangoon on Singapore and other nearby areas. This should draw a major IJAF response and give me the opportunity to shoot down lots of IJAF planes.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Roxas [Panay] base !!!
As you can see most of my shipping has managed to escape. It appears that the IJN CVs are short of fuel as they aren't sprinting after my shipping as I would have expected. I guess that taking out the 2 Tanker and Replenishment TFs gathered at Christmas Island has crippled the enemy pursuit ---- great news.

Brilliant, more AOs get hit. In the long-run these AOs are incredibly difficult for him to replace. Fair enough he owns most of the ocean but that won't always be so and then their loss will begin to bite.... Plus AOs can be used to transport oil so their loss hurts his efforts to fuel his economy.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/01/42
Well we've made it into another month. In a few days time my first pre-production P-38 squadron becomes available and in a month's time I begin getting a sizable number of B-24s ( 46 or so per month ) and can begin sustaining sizable four-engined bomber losses over China etc.
I only have about 5 USAAF fighter squadrons in operation over Burma/Java and I want to, at least, triple that over the next couple of months to allow me to provide better rear area CAP.

Its nice to be able to show that shorne of their overwhelming Ki-109 CAP the IJN is still damned vulnerable --- I think this is important because it has to factor into jagdfluger's decision-making in terms of an invasion of India.

I was expecting this sort of raid as I have no CAP over Moulmein. I lose almost 50 Il-2s and R-12s but I have major reserves of both plane types --- one reason I was willing to place them at Moulmein without fighter cover ---- The LaGG-3s which fought the Ki-264s were all "leakers" from Rangoon.

Overall the good news is that while my losses have reached 898 ships so far the IJN's losses have, with the loss of 1 TK, 1 AO, 3 PC and 1 DE today climbed over 300.
Monthly summary:
1. The initial divisional-strength IJA invasion of Australia has been defeated with the loss of most of the IJN transports and significant attritional loss to lack of supply. IJA units are rambling around the Australian interior but I'm concentrating more on ensuring my retreat route to Perth remains open than on hunting them down. When the next major wave of invasions arrives I will have to retreat to Perth ( although I expect that jagdfluger may just go to the core of things and invade at Perth to make this all academic ).
2. The evacuation from Java succeeded beyond all expectations. Almost 20 DDs and a CL were succesfully evacuated in addition to well over 50 APs, AKs, MSWs, DMS and PCs. In short, more than enough escaped for me to ram another 1 to 2 significant invasions down the throats of the Japanese over the next month to six weeks... and I'll need to do this in order to bolster my forces in Java/Sumatra.
3. Java/Sumatra. My supplies in Java/Sumatra are a few thousand below the level I need to have every base in white. In short I have too little supply there and it is time to get serious about creating an aerial bridge. Consequently I've had a look at my plane types and have determined that the PB2Y Coronado flying boat ( a payload of over 10,000 ), the Wellingtons ( 4,500 ), B24D ( 8,800 ) and PB5Y ( 4,000 ) should be my premier transport planes due to the following considerations:
a) Range: The PB2Y and PB5Y can fly from Rangoon direct to Soerabaja ( 27 hexes ). The Wellington and B-24D can fly directly from Bombay to Soerabaja. Why to Soerabaja? Simple, I don't want to lose 50 planes in a single day to enemy LRCAP and with over 200 of my fighters in the air over Soerabaja it has the best chance of being free of enemy LRCAP.
b) Replacement rates. I get 10 PB2Ys, 40 Catalinas, 30 Wellingtons and, from next month, 46 B-24Ds per month. As such I have a sustainability to these operations.
c) Payload. Once things get fully in swing in about a week's time I should have about 32 Wellingtons ( 64 tons per day ), 20 PB5Ys ( Dutch and capable of ferrying 40 tons per day ), 48 Coronados ( 240 tons ), 12 pre-production B-24s ( 48 tons ) for a total of over 100 planes flying close to 400 tons into Soerabaja per day. I doubt I'll manage that due to accidents, rounding down etc etc but even 300 tons per day would double the amount of supply my troops in Java have to subsist on per month.
4. CONUSA - I'm making a move on Coal Harbour. I plan to send in over 200 sacrificial P-35s in order to provide cover for a major bomber strike ( of only expendable bombers, B-18s, B-25s and the like ) with a view to seeing if I can't close Coal Harbour down and create a situation in which I can force an evacuation --- which will allow me to hit and sink a lot of the transports involved. I doubt I actually have the strength to really do this but it IS worth a shot as it would have far-reaching ramifications if I could.
5. Burma etc... 3000 AV of Chinese troops are moving on Rahaeng. With just a little luck they can roll over the Japanese there ( who don't seem to muster more than 300 AV ) and push on through toward Bangkok. I don't really expect to take Bangkok BUT I do expect to be able to create a stable, albeit threatening, front line near Bangkok which will tie down significant IJA forces. Then I'll bring my second Chinese Army Group to bear ( another 3000 AV ) along the Tavoy/Victoria Point axis with a view to spreading the IJA forces in Malaysia/Western China even more widely. At this point in time it'll be time for the 4,000 AV of Chinese forces in Western China ( near Canton ) to get involved and strike south and west in the hope that the previous two attacks will have denuded the IJA forces covering the western Chinese border.
Even if this phased operation achieves very little in terms of captured ground it will tie down IJA forces, buy my troops in Java and Australia more time and prevent the reinforcement of crucial areas of Sumatra that I wish to recapture in order to improve the chances of my troops based out of Soerabaja.
6. Aerial losses:
We are well on the way to passing through the 10,000 Allied aircraft lost barrier by the middle of the month. I expect that to coincide with a loss of some 7,500 IJ(N)AF planes including over 1300 Zeroes. So, with the loss rate for most of last month actually being in the Allies' favour I'm slowly but surely clawing back the overall loss ratio and where it was once solidly 2:1 in favour of Japan we should, by year's end be killing so many more IJ(N)AF planes than we're losing as to have the loss ratio be pretty close to 1:1. Already it is 1.33 : 1 which is significantly better than was being achieved in the mad scramble of the first few months.
7. Aerial upgrades:
The British and Dutch forces have all now upgraded from their obsolete fighters and bombers to more modern fighters and bombers. The next major leap in Allied capability comes in January 1943 but there is a sufficient leap in capability in August/September 1942 that an aerial offensive begun in mid-October 1942 should achieve some truly useful results backed, as it will be, by the first pre-production P-51Bs and the first month of P-38s and B-24s.
I have been hoarding the vast majority of my air force for the past 3 or 4 months and preparing them methodically for this offensive. I have major reserves of MiG-3s, P-40Es ( close to 2 months worth of production ), B-17s ( I can mass over 100 B-17s over Singapore any day I want --- and will begin to slowly ramp this up over the next week or so, I don't want to do anything sudden ), major reserves of RAF Spitfires, Pe-2 reserves, over 100 B-26s, a similar number of B-25s and a large number of B-18s for loss-intensive raiding. In short the fighting over Soerabaja has been conducted with a view to the cost and whenever the cost in terms of new airframes looked to be getting too high I swapped them out, brought in P-36s or P-35s and rested my P-40Es etc until enough of them were in the pool to accept losses again. It has put a massive strain on the fighting over Soerabaja BUT it has also meant that while my 2nd string has fought and died there my first echelon forces have doubled and redoubled their strength completely out of view of jagdfluger.
At one stage since the invasion of Java my on-map airpower dipped below 2,000 planes as I ruthlessly refused to reinforce either Australia or Java or Rangoon beyond that level of committment I had decided wouldn't harm my build-up to October 1942. Even in the past fortnight as I've slowly begun introducing a few units into China and Burma after upgrading and with a view to training my numbers have soared and I've now got over 3,000 planes on-map with every expectation that that number will rise to well over 4,000 by the time October rolls around.
I'm actually quite excited about this as I've been planning with a view to October 1942 since at least February and while my plans have had to undergo a little change in response to the fact that I couldn't take Soerabaja I think I'm still in a pretty good condition to make this happen.

5 days to the pre-production P-38s... They have a top speed of 400 and so should be as far beyond the Ki-109s as the Ki-109s are beyond my P-40Es etc... and the Ki-109s slaughter my P-40Es. I'm actually quite excited about the P-38s, I hope they don't fail utterly and prove a huge let-down.

1942, the war against TKs and AOs continues with the sinking of an AO and a TK which were heavily damaged in previous turns and finally succumbed to their wounds. In other news KB has split into two with one portion making its way back to Singapore via the Malacca straits and the other returning to Java via a more westerly route.

At this rate the reduction of Chungking could cost him 1,000 bombers. It'd be worth it actually at that cost but I doubt jagdfluger will be willing to pay it. These I-16 pilots are the best of all my allied pilots. My leading pilot, a 20 kill ace and 6 other 10+ kill aces are members of this squadron so I'm not surprised to see them doing so brilliantly. In another fortnight or so once I have enough MiG-3s to meet my "Minimum Required Reserve" - aka MRR -, a concept I came up with to ensure I wouldn't let my fighter and bomber numbers fall below the level required for my October offensive... I want a minimum of 64 MiG-3s in reserve for re-equipping purposes come October and so I have withdrawn all MiG-3s from combat until I have a 96 plane reserve. Once that's done I can convert a 32 plane squadron whilst still having 64 in reserve, I will swap these I-16s for MiG-3s and make Chungking relatively impervious to enemy aerial attack as MiG-3s will simply massacre any Zero escort.

Hmm, Bettys tested my defences but found several Dutch pilots waiting. I have been training several of my re-equipped "October" units in Colombo and I think this has drawn jagdfluger's attention. If you look either in the Design section or in 1EyedJacks AAR (or his opponents) the poor performance of P-38s was addressed in between their numerous restarts. Since your game started long before this was changed by Cid, then you can expect your P-38s to be almost worthless. [:(][:@][:(]

A nice little ambush over Palembang claiming 12 enemy planes at a cost of 6 of my own --- most of which are obsolete P-40Bs.
Nice indeed. Given that the Allied planes didn't mount anything bigger than .50 cal, I'm surprised they took such a toll on the Me-264's. (I imagine some of the good work was from AAA.)
You called for ideas about Jagdfluger raids into China. He really dows seem to love destroying resources. Is it possible he knows something about the victory conditions I don't know? Failing that, perhaps he has decided not to push much further into China so the resources will be available for Russia and India, and is therefore reducing the value of China to the Allies as much as he can.

ny59,
Well, this is the risk the guys in the real war faced. It might look good on paper but in real life it might be utter crap. C'est la guerre, I'm not going to get ueber-worked up about it. After all the logistical and strategic realities of the war will determine who wins, not who has the coolest new planes etc.
Harlock,
I think he is trying to create a desert in China - which suits me fine because I can pull more and more troops out of China and stage them through Burma into Malaysia.

Well, he massed 120 Zeroes for a sweep and only half my CAP flew so those Zeroes proved enough to brush my forces aside. Losses are going to be high but, on the positive side, most of my losses are in eminently replaceable forces... except for the B-17Es, Coronados and Zeroes.
Still, lots more Japanese pilots have been killed today and the fact that the ruinous raids on Batavia are no longer routinely happening is proof that Jagdfluger must be feeling the losses.

I would expect him to now turn his attention back on Java after putting a dent in your forces at Ragoon. The good things is your pilot losses are a lot lower than his since the a2a happened over your your base. The bad news is the need to pull some of your planes back to take replacements and recover fatigue and morale from the 3 well timed strike. I would say Kudos to him for getting all of those to hit in one day.

Absolutely.... Jagdfluger is absolutely top-notch. He always has a reason for doing what he does, protects his most important assets, ignores feints and attacks against minor objectives and always keeps his eye on the main chance. He isn't quite as coup de main"ey" as I am but he's almost as aggressive. You can really tell he used to drive F-14s can't you? This is pretty much a fangs bared situation.
Yeah, I expect him to try to hit Java soon BUT I think that my ChiCom forces making for Rahaeng are going to force him to divert significant bomber forces to its defence and a ground bombing offensive. Overall we just need a little more time --- about a month --- to where we can begin getting significant numbers of MiG-3s into action and then we'll be safe over Rangoon. I have about 80 of them on tap at the moment but can't release them without falling below the 64 plane reserve I have set myself for October 1942.
Again I'm going to have to suborn my current needs and current operational necessity to the greater strategic goal of putting something useful and strong together in October 1942. Its frustrating to fight with one hand tied behind your back but even more frustrating when YOU have tied that hand behind your back yourself [8D]
In reality, in real life, all commanders sometimes have to struggle against their personalities - one might be overly cautious, another excessively aggressive - when the situation warrants a response different than the one they would instinctually choose. I would always argue that the great commanders are commanders who can suborn their personality to the situation --- and on this ground alone I would argue against Rommel's inclusion in the pantheon of great commanders ---. This is a theoretical aside and not intended to make any comparison between myself and great commanders throughout history because a) I'm not quite so narcissistic and b) I KNOW I'm going to break and commit fighter forces to the front at some stage before they should be committed according to the plan

I think you would not make it as a commander in the modern world (at least for a western army). However, you would have done well in the ancient world (2000 years ago or longer) when commanders would throw away large numbers of troops to achieve their goals. This is more a reflection of your playing style where I'm more of a cautious player and try to minimize casualties.
RE: Fire in the Skies

Ah well, the true measure of a commander is adaptability. Right now it requires throwing lives away to achieve the necessary goals so that's what I do, when it doesn't I won't. I would also say that I am a adherent to the belief that a high rate of casualties for a short time tends to result in lower overall casualty rates than alternate battleplans ( which usually require a moderate rate of casualties for a much longer time ).
Thankfully though I'm not in a situation where I have to spend lives in combat. I've turned off enough life support and made enough "not for treatment" triage decisions in my day to know that I lost parts of the human side of me to those decisions. There's significantly less empathy etc in this husk now after a while in ER etc making those decisions than there was prior to my qualification. I've only ever directly and solely made that call maybe 50 times ( in concert with others I've made it many more obviously ) but it has taken a toll of me, a toll I embrace when called upon to make a similar call, since what I've lost through making previous decisions allows me to make it through making those decisions now, but a toll I regret when I see how others are moved by suffering in ways that leave me unruffled in the slightest.
Suffice it to say that when I'm in my more contemplative moods ( as I obviously am today ) I'm REALLY glad that I'll never be in a position to have to pay that toll wholesale as paying it retail takes a recognisable toll. So, here's to never having to REALLY find out what era I'd make a good commander in

I'm usually in a local ER at least twice a week in my role as a mobile crisis counselor for children. Most of the ER doctors (and nurses) are glad to see me and let me decide if the child can go home or needs to be placed in a psychiatric hospital (a lot of the time the parent is the one who needs to go, but I'm not there to see them). They seem to have a genuine dislike dealing with people with mental health issues while I would not go to med school even if I was given a full scholarship as I hate biology and such. I have a lot of patience dealing with "relationship" issues, but not other things. Must be my OCD-ness. [:D]
While the USA deals with the issues of universal health care, I would like to see reform in mental health as each state does it so much differently than others. My blood pressure almost always goes up when the "media" talks about mental health without knowing anything about it. [:@]
OK, off my soap box. [:)]

*chuckle* Well as a medic turned psychiatrist ( who has a few years under his belt in each specialty ) believe you me I can see your point. Most doctors, to be honest, look at anything which can't be fixed with a pill or an incision as being "too damned hard" or "too damned grey and indistinct". I've met quite a few who are brilliant and treat anything whether it be medical, surgical or psychiatric with care and sensitivity and a realisation that no matter what the cause it CAN be really distressing to the patient but most doctors ( the same as most people ) do have some things they just don't like dealing with and put in the "Too hard, I hope someone else deals with it" box. You've got to bear in mind that mentally most doctors are trained to have yes/no and either/or and then/do logic gates in their decision-making processes. mental health is any area where "If/maybe/sort of/let's find out more/ let's chat about it and clarify all the grey areas which are a aspect of everyone's life, interpretation and personality" is the more realistic gate to filter decision-making processes. The sort of person who is attracted to "if it's appendicitis then follow the appendix algorith to decide between conservative management vs surgery" is often going to be the sort of person who hates situations which are so grey as to make a mockery of any algorithmic approach --- and since they aren't functionally or temperamentally suited to such situations they are happy to palm the decisions off to those who are.
Psychologists tend to hate the biology etc, medics hate the psychology and I think, in the best Jedi terms, psychiatrists can bring balance to the force [:D] by bridging both the biological and the psychological models and helping everyone realise that absolutely everything is multi-factorial and requires a multi-faceted response. GOOOOOO psychiatry !!!! [:D]
As to the US' mental health system... Well, as someone who works in a country with universal, free at point of access, health and mental health care I can only say that I have been horrified by some of the stories US colleagues have told me of the quotidienne practics in some US hospitals/services. Some are world-leading but some of the stories show care levels so lacking in benefit as to be almost abusive. There's a joke here that if most psychiatrists here in Ireland had a chat with our colleagues in America about feeling tired after a day at work etc we'd end up with a diagnosis, a referral to a psychoanalyst and a bag full of pills instead of just a "Yeah, life can be a bitch sometimes" and a pat on the back. Sometimes when I hear stories from the US I think it is less of a joke and more of an actual retelling of reality.

Well, sheer numbers let a lot of bombers get through and the 96 P-35s lost were worthless in any case BUT the P-38Gs also utterly failed to perform. This is most disappointing.
Hi,
those 96 P-35 losses might be worthless for you, but I bet Jagdfluger likes them a lot. If pilots gets average 1 point of experience for every kill, you just distributed maybe 100 experience points to his pilots with this raid.. Maybe it would be better to just scrap this planes or use them during the transit. But in combat they look like "free xp for enemy" [;)]
