A photo of me taken during Summer 2008 in Bora Bora (french Polynesia). The gun, build in 1917 (170mm), with 3 others, has been installated in February 1942 by the GI's during operation "Bobcat". Bora Bora was part of the Pacific defensive perimeter at the beginning of the war.
The same place in February 1942

You know, when I give my troops orders to start building fortifications at Bora Bora, I sure don't want so many of them just sitting around!
BTW: nice job finding a WW2 photo of the same place your photo is from...

There were more than 3000 GI's who have spent all the war in this isolated island, doing nothing after the completion of the fortifications and a big airstripe still in use nowadays.
The photo comes from a small book "GIs in paradise" which explains all the story about operation "Bobcat" which was a logistic nightmare. By reading this book you see that in WIP the transport capacity of the American at the beginning of 1942 is far overevaluated.

I guess this equals more than out by the total overevaluated transport capacity of the Japanese for the whole war... [;)]
