Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #12. Assault on Athens.

Though it may sound odd but storms actually helped the odds of the axis assault to take Athens. Still, only a 60/40 chance with the axis made good on.

just a note - the USSR can break the Pact as one decision. Declaring War on Germany is a second decision, not required by the first decision.

The Axis would be crushed in this game, with the USSR breaking the Pact, just about forcing a German DOW, and the USA likely entering in the summer of 1941.

Yes, the right thing to do with the USSR would be to break the pact and start retreating from the border back to better defensive positions. It's 1941 and it could save important units now sitting at the border. Germany is not in position to attack the USSR too. So why not harm the economy of the Reich by cutting off the oil they are getting from Uncle Joe.

Hi rkr1958

If you can break the pact with the USSR then, from an historical perspective, I hope you decide not to. Every single action taken by Stalin in the run up to Barbarossa and every initial action for sometime afterwards seems to confirm one thing. Uncle Joe had NO intention - certainly in 1941 - of declaring war on Germany.

I definitely didn't. I finished reading "Nohman" this past Friday and I have to say it left me with a perspective on the Soviet and Japanese military and command that I never had before. I found the political maneuvering by Stalin very intriguing. And, the fact that the Japanese high command let mid level officers (majors and colonels) have the power that they had and get away with what they did amazed me. In my game the Soviets have no intention of doing anything to antagonize the Germans; especially breaking the pact.
