June9, Trinkat and Great Nicobar

For some reason, the enemy TF decided not to strike the beaches; this meant another relatively unimpeded unload day; which is great news

Lots of LBAs, most were destroyed by CAP or missed, the only exception was a returning small xAKL TF that was intercepted and wiped out

also, CM Abdiel hit a reef while laying mines, it will try to limp back to Colombo

June 8th, Rossel island

Can't help to admire the prowess of Japanese surface TFs at night time
Fuso's TF, the one that yesterday sank a few PTs, then spent ammo against dive bombers (while receiving some bomb hits) pulled another great performance today's turn:
- First, it defeated cruiser TF in 2 night time battles
- Second, it defeated 2 more PT boat TFs in Rossel island
- then proceeded to bombard the island, inflicting good damage, still inside the nightime phase
- then withdrew with minimal damage, out of LBA range by the end of the day phase,

And as you can see here, the real purpose of this raid was to clean the way for another (cruiser) TF, to get in bombardment range to hit heavy bombers at Pt Moresby

I will rebase squadrons, but there is a good chance losses will be high, as there are many planes under maintenance

June 10th was a quiet turn, only highlight was air battles over Great Nikobar and Trinkat in which at least 20 Netties went down. and I am still puzzled there was no bombardment of Port Moresby

But then, June 11th, and he finally decided to engage the British fleets at Great Nikobar. 3 battles in total, the 1st was a clean Japanese win against light cruisers, the 2nd one was really beautiful if costly, the 3rd one a big disappointment as the Dutch let them escape
Another disappointment was the CV Illustrious, as the swordfish couldn't find targets due to weather/ range

Time for the invasion fleets to return home; this while Illustrious would try to catch some damaged enemy ships

On June 11th report, I got 2 Petes, 1 Jake as ground losses, that is very consistent with the fact CA Mogami ended up in very poor shape; heavy fires, heavy damage, so that is perfect match

Then on June 12th, I get this new report with 8 Petes + 4 Jakes... [X(]
that is great! but how??

easiest explanation is that for the last 2 turns I have been bombing Milne Bay and looks like I finally sank AV Kiyokawa Maru... but then why he would still have the float planes embarked??? do they fly from a disbanded ship? I don't think so, I normally rebase them as soon as the AV disbands (in the same base)

EDIT: I was trying to convince myself that a damaged BB also sank this turn, but no, it seems that he kept squadrons Kiyokawa Maru-1 and Kiyokawa Maru-2 without change from Dec 7th 41.. End of mystery, no battleship sunk [:(]

I know it is not efficient, but I understand the need of superior numbers/ firepower. Smaller TFs are more optimal but had more chances of crippling damage focused on fewer ships

On June 16.42, he sent his surface fleets to bombard Rossel island,

once again, I defended with PTs and once again they failed to do anything other than die.

Actually this time, they finally achieved what I consider is their main objective; to delay the enemy TF enough so that it ends inside LBA range; that they achieved, but regrettably the damage to the airbase was extensive and my LBAs didn't fly; it will be some more days to have Tagula island at airfield level 2!

Only silver linen is that it looks like somehow some destroyers got dropped from the TF, maybe a collision? in any case CAT put some bombs to a destroyer

I would guess he had it available at Rabaul when he decided to launch the attack; I initially thought it was a faint, a bait invasion to get CV Hornet; and then after a day he was going to withdraw it

Looks like it was not a faint, but in any case he succeeded in sinking Hornet, which is worth more than the LCUs he will lose; I only sank a slow CVE which was a great exchange for Japan

Regarding Nicobar, totally agree, best guess is he thought I had battalion sized LCU. That said, he has LBAs bombing daily, I am too far away to bring support, other than sending the Eastern fleet for specific operations, like the one that is going to start next turn

Japan bombarded Great Nicobar, I was not expecting it to happen this turn; the TF was relatively far away, I guess it ran full speed. End result is that my "deliberate attack" failed, also some damage to the base and troops

Enemy unloaded undisturbed; and on the air phase CV Illustrious focused on the surface TF instead of the transports, the results were good; for the loss of 8 Martlets and 2 Albacores, I put 3 torpedoes on CA Takao [&o]

BB Ise, which was heavily damaged a month ago, is now confirmed as sunk, KAMPAI! [&o]

And finally [8|], it seems that he will commit to fortress Palembang. intel confirms a TF moving on direction to Oosthaven. The unit transported is "48th IJA Division"; which was deployed on Luzon; so probably will come from Manila or Singapore

By now, June22.42, it will be a cake walk to take Oosthaven, no more mines or naval assets to try to stop it, I might try to direct the carriers (Hermes and Illustrious), but 15 Swordfish are too few to seriously damage a TF that is probably defended by battleships and CAP, plus Martlets already depleted last turn and there is no time to go back to Colombo
