Why should we have to create artifical rules when we can clearly see what needs to be fixed?
Exactly! [:)]
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what I did in Mandalay. It is a completely valid play. The problem comes from the AI mishandling it's aircraft resulting in my units being *in supply* and able to recover roughly 1500 assault points worth of strength that would not have happened had all those bombers actually not been stopped.
Mandalay must draw it's supply over a very long path. Bombing it would result in supply losses that would have prevented my troops from getting enough rest to be able to fight. This is *exactly* what I did to the AI. Continuous bombing to sap their supply which makes them perform poorly. If it worked for me, it is obvious that it should have worked for the AI having more aircraft and a shorter supply line.
The problem came from the aircraft not doing their jobs, killing off my supply. You always need to remember that AAR's only tell part of the story. If you looked through the screens I posted, you will notice that my supply state was pink, indicating that not enough supply was getting through. This is *without* a single bomb hitting Mandalay. Had they hit with all those aircraft, I would have 200,000 starving troops unable to do much but run (and funny enough that sounds just like history to me!).

Come on guys, Frag is playing on historical difficulty, using ALOT of hindsight 20/20, every trick he knows. AtoA losses are high for the AI, but since he did not leave his air groups in the PI to wither and die on a vine, in SRA. He concentrated his airpower, saved the groups worth saving, upgraded, rested them. He is not shocked liked the REAL allied command structure, he is not concerned with historical bickering between commands which diluted the combat power etc.
When I get and play the game, after 2,000 restarts because I discovered something new or how something works, and I hand the AI its head on a platter, I will start shouting. It may be me, but I still have trouble with UV's AI, if I do not use "gamey" tactics.
Other than that, keep a going Frag. Sorry to highjack your thread.
I agree in part.
However, we can thank Mr. Frag for playing as well as he has, and in using "every trick in the book" to beat the AI.
When I play I want to use every trick too.
However, the purpose of playtesting, and this AAR, is to find weaknesses in the AI and fix them. As Mr. Frag has indicated, this is being done.
Imagine playing a WWII game in Europe as the French, and because you found a gamey tactic, were able to prevent the Axis AI from NEVER being able to defeat you in 1940? As a wargamer how would you feel about that? HoI anyone?[:-]

OK.
So I am assuming that the Japanese AI problem of "not doing its job" has been fixed? Will it now affect a player's supply situation?
Clearly, in this theatre the Mandalay fortification levels are too high, there are too many engineers here, and the Japanese pilots need more experience to overcome the Allied aircraft defense so they can indeed bomb Mandalay. [:D]

Again. Understand the root of the problem:
Had the bombers made it, they would have hit the target.
Hitting the target causes losses to engineers/support staff and makes those left alive start doing repairs.
While they are doing repairs, they can not build up the base. End result fortification level lower.
At the same time, the constant bombardment also affects troops, causing them to remain fatigued so the do not recover and grow stronger. They also have less support because support troops are being killed in the bombing.
At the same time, supplies are not available for replacement of troops.
It is one big house of cards, all caused by the bombers not reaching the target.

Very clear.
Thanks for your efforts and replies [:)]
So the "root" problem then is the Japanese planes are not getting through to bomb Mandalay.
This in turn was caused by the problem of the Japanese pilots not having enough experience.
So, in fixing the problem then, I am assuming that the Japanese pilots have been given more experience?

So much for *that* plan.
I forgot to not dock my DD's at PH when running back to get more troops! Poof! The stupid guys swarmed all over them and upgraded the AA. Now I need to wait to get the damage levels down a bit before running more troops back to Noumea.
Question:
Are ship upgrades automatic?

Dear Vonny,
The problem is NOT that the Brits stopped the IJA at Mandalay. The AI does not need FURTHER stacking in favor of Japan. Not only did Frag use extreme concentration of force (textbook tactic) but he had good air, and an entire extra good division (the 18th) that was not lost at Singapore.
There is a problem though. A BIG problem. And that is the AI's reaction to adversity. There should be an entire nest of loss-minimization rules added to the AI.
Example: when your bombers get wiped out raid after raid the AI should double fighters. If it does not have the fighters it should send the bombers on to other targets. (To make this rule more leader-oriented, the air group leaders quality should lead to a quicker reaction to losses.)
Example: If the IJA is getting wiped out in daily bombardments (Mandalay) the probability of choosing another (or secondary) objective should increase. In the case of Mandalay a flanking manoeuver by some forces to take out some supply lines. This would also be a simple rule to program. (Although the results could be wild.)
Example: Frag's exmplary record of ship sinkings. If ship losses to air reach a certain level, AI should either provide more LRCAP or increase the value of the air bases from which the raids are launched in objective-selection algorithm (or ideally, both).
Example: Operational losses. Follow pad152 and have a rule that lowers the number of planes on long missions as fatigue reaches certain levels. Again this could be made probabalistic and tied to the air commanders rating.
Example: There are probably about ten other simple rules that could *greatly* improve the AI's results once it is knocked off its historical time-table or objective mapping.
In short I do not want the deck stacked in favor of the AI. Watching Frag's AARs tells me that at the easiest setting its already stacked. What I want is a smarter AI that will react better when it's in a pickle - like Frag's Mandalay. Thus I do not see a "loophole" but the need for a trickier AI. BTW the Daca air combat seems to illustrate well the need for a set of loss-avoidance rules.
Yours,
Tondern

No, the actual fix tracks back even further.
Prevent the AI from wasting skilled pilots on silly missions where they are not needed.
There are more then enough skilled pilots when the game starts. The problem is that with all the upgrades and ops losses, the ai is burning through them too fast, resulting in too many *newly upgraded* sub-standard units that now suddenly have the range to commit mass suicide.

Are ship upgrades automatic?
Yes and no.
They happen if you disband the ship in a port that has a repair yard after the date the upgrade becomes available.
Should you choose to not disband them, it will not happen. Previously, it was happening at any port and caused some headaches so the restriction was added that it only happens at a port that has a repair yard.

Dear Tonny (I think it rhymes with Vonny): [:D]
I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment. It all sounds very good.
However, I fear that some of these things may not be able to be programmed in (especially at this late date).
Also, I think when faced with opposition, the Japanese AI needs to send its airforce en mass, to overcome Allied air resistance.
Cheers!

Prevent the AI from wasting skilled pilots on silly missions where they are not needed.
Mr. Frag: Ah, I see. I'm glad to hear the devs have done this.
Tondern: I agree that smarter AI is of course better, but I do see some evidence that the AI knows when to fold 'em. Didn't Mr. Frag report that the AI withdrew from Mandalay after a couple of days?
Devs: Shouldn't there be a political-point cost to removing massive numbers of troops from India, the "Jewel in the Crown" of the British Empire?

Frag,
What happened here?

G4M1 Betty x 15
Allied aircraft

Am I reading this correctly that no Allied planes engaged in CAP, but the damage to the base was still minor?
(I couldn't stand in moot witness to this AAR any longer...)

By May 5, 1942, the Japanese AI planes in Burma are being shredded into oblivion against those Uber P40s. At this rate there won't be much air opposition left. [:D]
It's getting painful to see 3-6 Zeros escorting bombers against 50+ Uber Warhawks:
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30

A6M2 Zero x 3
C5M Babs x 4

A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 2 destroyed

If you look closely, right *above* that set is the exact same set for the Hurricanes. Because I work for a living, I end up having to do a fair bit of alt-tabbing right in the middle of a turn run and it sometimes zaps the buffer resulting it the "aircraft attacking:" stuff getting glitched. The actual results are real, just the messages of the aircraft attacking goes out to lunch. The price tag of trying to get this many turns done in such a short time.
