least be in the ballpark:
Except you reported the word racist was used. Now racist is a pretty charged word and you reported that it was used.....See the difference?

The same can be said about some in here reporting about the Georgia governor. It's easy to fact check that too. Wait, it actually isn't. It takes a lot of time. That's why nobody else in here checked. Don't believe everything you hear on CNN, etc.

Personally, I have no difficulty passing on church services.[:)]
I suspect that you are like me - you feel closer to God when you get out in the great outdoors and feel the beauty of creation. I think it's why so many people get a cottage at the lake - it reduces the stress magically and the world seems less crazy when you can play in the water or the woods.

There was a minister who admonished a man for going fishing on Sunday instead of going to church.
The man replied "Do you want me to go to church and think about fishing or to go fishing and think about God?"

Don't get much news from TV in general. Just local stuff. 30 minutes a day or I couldn't function. The print journalists are doing the best job of this. Rough rule of thumb is the source of the print journalism has won lots of Pulitzer prizes year after year they are probably a good source.....but as the Russians say (Not Regan actually, he cribbed the quote) "Trust, but verify". Most of these scoundrels leave a clear trail of tweets or video so it's not so hard to check

This has been a great thread, doing exactly what I had hoped. We've gotten a lot of great information from a lot of people everywhere. We've had people with particular expertise weigh in with their own thoughts. There are differences of opinion but mostly folks get along and self-regulate. I've taken thoughts posted in here by John Dillworth, Obvert, RFalvo, Chickenboy, Cap Mandrake and shared them with my family, both in writing and in conversation. This is an excellent community. In person, I believe everyone here would be most gracious to everybody else. Without exception.
I've known many of the people in here for years. Over that time, most of them have built up tremendous deposits of good will. If they've said the wrong thing in here, from time, to time, those can be overlooked (mostly, usually) because they have such established records. That's happened a few times.
There is one person in here who overdrew his account of good will seriously. He's made the atmosphere poisonous. He's provoked other members to various expressions of outrage or leaving. I've seen people who have never had a discouraging word become uncharacteristically miffed at him, but it's not them. It's him. He's the poison.
And he has his enablers. While most people in here say what they think, there is one who tells others what to think. He cloaks his words in "I want to build bridges" while doing his work and tearing them down. When he gets things absolutely, demonstratively wrong, he slips away in the dark. Always, 100% of the time, refuses to acknowledge a mistake.
There is one other that internalizes things and sees boogeymen where there aren't any. A few days ago, he posted that it was an age thing for me; that I was picking on him and others because of generational matters, which isn't true. Until that moment, I had no idea how old he was. From the context of his comment, I now suppose he's in his 30s or 40s but for all I knew, until then, he was my age or 20 or 80. Another fellow I know pretty well is, I think, in his late 40s, but's that's my age (or so I think). The poisoner is comparatively younger based on a comment he made a year ago in another thread, but I'm not sure. It doesn't matter.
Or is there some component to generational things that explains the behavior of these three? Is that why the poisoner and his enablers insist on keeping everything public? Is that why they refused every request to keep this private or take matters private? Is this a Facebook way of doing things? (Probably not - there are undoubtedly a bunch of folks in here, younger and older, who use Facebook but don't act this way.)
I have the poisoner on Ignore and it's worked pretty well - not perfectly, but well. I'm adding his two enablers. They've seriously drawn on their stock of goodwill. Not overdrawn though. I'll be glad to discuss things privately with them at length, in depth. Always have been.
Every person in here is a good man in person, I believe. Even the one who poisoned this thread.
I think a few others on here are beginning to see who you really are Dan. It's sad since you obviously put a lot of pride in your standing in this community. When it comes to having ideals of yours challenged at all, you attack the person, not the idea.
What Cap Mandrake said is beyond anything I've seen on the Forum directed at another long term forumite in the nine years I've been here. You can green button anyone you like, but that won't take away the problem. If you want a community you have to accept that involves people that are different than yourself. You also have to use the same principles to regulate behaviour for all if that is something you feel is your prerogative.
All I can say is that I'm incredibly disappointed someone I spent years interacting with, playing against and sharing personal anecdotes and good wishes with would throw me under the bus instead of engaging in discussion.

Here's the situation with respect to leading countries.
The USA currently has 28 deaths per million.
We are BENEATH the curve on the model posted by Erik Rutens a few days back that shows a total of 93k mortalities over five months.
That will be about the same as the 2018-19 five-month flu season (80k, per Chickenboy's posts some days back).
That's more than 10x less than early estimates. Others (I think JohnD) have noted that's because of the countermeasures in place. IE, in our federal system, the steps taken have had a dramatic impact.
There is a bit of difference in situation that makes comparison between US and other countries premature. The US is early in the onset and it is clear it will manifest as a series of peaks all over the country. It is just getting started. Spain, Italy, the UK are much smaller, more densely populated countries so their peaks will be closer together and their first peaks have already happened. They are at or near the backslope so their future new cases will gradually decline while the US is still ramping up. A month from now, when the US is well into it everywhere, may be the time to do comparisons like this chart.

Erik that's what you say, not what you do. You have demeaned me personally in here, by name. Rather than saying what you think, you have specifically told me what I should think. You have said that my feelings about the press are "dangerous." When I pointed out the mistakes you made with respect to Georgia you didn't acknowledge them. Over and over again you have talked peace but too often acted differently. I've been just as disappointed in your behavior as you have been in mine.
As for CapMandrake, I've never before seen him (and other forumites) so upset in here. On the other hand, the instigator has repeatedly acted reprehensibly. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt given their years of good conduct.

BBFanboy, yes. The projection for mortality in the USA comes out to about 280/M. We'll see how that compares when all is said and done. But it'll probably be okay. New York and some others will be very high, Oklahoma will be very low. Let's let Oklahoma choose its course. It has earned the right to.

Daily totals for Italy just posted. Significant drop in mortality!
Hey, Italy, everyone's pulling for you!**
**As repeatedly said in here, "As Italy goes, so goes the world." First Italy flattened yet the numbers held stubbornly high. Finally, finally, a marked trend of decline. [:)]
That stubbornly high period I ascribe to the mass exodus of people from the hotspots when it became known the government was going to order a lockdown, and to some people not taking the lockdown seriously in the first week or so. The curve can only decline (after about 20days) when the lockdown becomes truly effective.

What I also like about this link
https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections is that it shows what the states are implementing and when they implemented it. There will be an opportunity later to do a good after-action report on what worked best and perhaps identify a best strategy for our states in the case of future pandemics.
Hey, we already know that you need a good Detection Level before beginning your attack on the enemy! This forum should write the AARs! I nominate Lowpe because he is already an AAR award winner! [:)]

That's good information, BBFanboy. Italy had so many handicaps that it really was behind the 8-ball. Many or most other countries will likely do better, given that they were able to learn from Italy's misfortune, imposition of countermeasures, and finally gaining traction.

Hey, Durned Wolf, Georgia is the state I'm most familiar with, so I post with what's going on here and reply with what's going on here, but I've made it clear (yesterday) that most or all states are doing the same and that all are in good faith doing what they think is best in a novel situation.
Exactly. And what he responded with is that again you gave no evidence for that claim. You just keep saying things like that makes them true.

Was that Donald Regan? US Secretary of the Treasury? Then Chief of Staff to the President of the United States? Just curious. It does not matter where or whom the quote is from.

I agree, no need to insult peacocks.
As Tommy Chong once said "Take a 'lude, man!"
