*******Mess Hall, No. 37 Sqdrn RAAF, Alice Springs, July 31, 1943*****
<A young, fresh-faced officer runs into the hall excitedly>
Young, fresh-faced officer: The new C-46's are here lads!
<Everyone in the hall rushes outside and gathers round the first train car where a large fuselage in swathed in canvas. Several enlisted men clamber aboard and begin to remove the canvas. The fuselage of a decidedly unsleek aircraft which has been painted the color of a species of South American tree frog is revealed. On the tail there is a decal saying "M&M Enterprises Endangered Species Paint Division">
Men and officers of No. 37 RAAF: GASP!

Its a (very thickly) veiled reference to Daffy, in Sherlock Holmes persona, looking for the Shropeshire Slasher. The Slasher who is the burly guy in the shot (who, oddly enough did not have the rising sun on his chest in the original) repeatedly thrashed Daffy until Porky (as Watson, of course) would come in and sort things out in a gentlemanly fashion. In the present case, however, It appears to be ol' Shropeshire that is getting thrashed. [:D]
Well done lad! Those countless hours of purposeful idleness in childhood have not gone to waste!
I'm not sure whether to be proud or ashamed of myself.....

Nah. Women love Looney Tunes trivia. It is very disarming. Just don't bring it up out of the blue or it will seem geeky.
Try something like this:
Hot Babe: "I just went to see that new Venezuelan conductor at the Bowl. He is so hot."
You: "Haha, the Hollywood Bowl! Remember that time Bugs was conductor there?"

The Jap carriers fell back on Saipan, where, only 50 miles from port, something good happened. US 32nd ID has occupied Laoag but supplies are slim. Aus. 2nd Armoured is driving on Lingayen.

*********Aboard USS Haddo, 50 miles West of Saipan, 05:20, August 2, 1943******
Capt. Yearling: <peering through periscope> It's Akagi, all right! Range 1800 yds. Bearing 280 on my mark...MARK! GET ME THAT DAMN SOLUTION! <It is no secret to all the crew that the Captain is a tortured soul...the short temper..the furrowed brow..the sleepless nights...something happened..something terrible...and dark too, did I say that? Let's look in on the Captain's thoughts>
Haddo? Haddo? What the **** is a haddo? Why not Swordfish or Barracuda or even Anchovy? At least I wouldn't have to explain myself. Telling my Dad had been bad enough but the taunts in the officer's club..."How is Pinkie"? they might ask..the bastards. I was in the top 80% of my class at Annapolis..why this? <the Captain liked to word it this way..it sounded better. Without thinking he speaks aloud> I'LL SHOW THOSE SADISTIC BASTARDS!

If the First Lt is credited with the years "(1926-2004)", how come the article was contributed on 31 December 2005? Per chance by the femme fatale?

Awesome carrier raid on major surface ships---looks kinda like the hammering given to the Repulse and POW, only in reverse.
