I'm dealing with KB sitting offshore of Marcus and raiding. My Wildcats there are putting up a decent fight, but wearing down badly. Yamato also showed up the previous turn, but did amazingly little damage. I have two convoys a day or two away waiting to sail in and resupply the base.

KB started pushing its luck, however as I've been funneling subs into the area. Finally got lucky.

I think there's a chance Zuikaku may not make it back. We'll see. They're slowly departing the area.

I've got probably 3 fleet carriers and 3 CVLs showing up within the month.

Now that I've offloaded troops from Pearl, supply there is stabilizing and I'm at 900K now. Once my new carriers arrive, I plan to kick off my Marianas invasion. Lots of support forces and planes at Pearl will ship off for this as well. I've also got 6-7 CVEs to accompany the affair. If KB wants to fight, I can bring it. Once the land based air gets established there, it'll be a very tough nut to crack. Lots of Jugs and Corsairs will be established.

Still waiting to re-supply Marcus, as Yamato keeps coming back to bombard. Fortunately, I have oilers with my supply ships to keep them up.

Getting my carriers rounded up. CVLs Princeton and Belleau Wood will be on-map from Panama in 6 days. CV Reprisal will be on in 7. Once I get all my transports rounded up/repaired, I'll kick my invasion off. None of the Iowas are due until 1944.

I've been bombing Ponape daily from the Marshalls with all the 4-engined bombers I have there. This turn, he finally moved some Nicks and Georges to fight back. B-25s took the most hits.

Wow, I thought more than a month and a half of game time went by before my last post.

We were out for some time, as Steve's computer decided to die. I was getting AAR burnout, too. These seem to be more work than the actual game.

After lots of nothing and some fruitless attempts to re-supply Marcus, I kicked off my Marianas invasion. We're about 4 days into this affair.

His carriers and some surface groups must have started reasonably near. I was unseen until I passed Marcus. Some of his subs, I think had spotting planes aboard, which gave the show away. Still, he might have thought I was re-supplying there, before I proceeded on.

My carriers started striking on the 23rd. The sticky point, is that he's kept his carriers next to Saipan, so they got a boost from the heavy fighter presence there. Over the course of a few days, my bombers have taken massive losses. I did get enough hits on his carriers. Much of his carrier force seems to be composed of CVEs and CVL, with a smattering of fleet carriers.

Most of my uncommitted amphib forces are hanging about 5-6 hexes east of the islands, waiting for him to clear out or be countered before they go in. I have two BB SAGs formed from what was accompanying the transports, plus one cruiser force. None of his surface groups have more than two BBs in them.

On the ground, I've taken Guam quickly. Several base units are already ashore and another force with aircraft will land shortly. The fight on Tinian is going well enough and it should be mine within a few days. Another amphib force with assault troops is enroute to there, also. Once Tinian falls, my surface forces will all head to Saipan and cover the amphibs to unload there. Another force is waiting to take Pagan, shortly afterwards.

It's been an exciting few days.

Oddly, his carriers never flew strikes against my ships. Despite the losses, I still probably have enough fighters to counter anything he may throw in. I don't think Saipan has any bombers ashore.

What a mess.

He's had surface groups (2 cruiser, one battleship) roaming the area, and hitting transports. After a few days of this, I think my transport losses are fairly minimal, but I have enough damaged ships.

He has lots of fighters on Saipan, and those have pretty much trashed all the bombers on my carriers. I've set the Hellcats to attack ships, but they've refused to fly, so I'm stuck. My CVEs ran into his cruisers, and got beat up good. All carriers are enroute to Pearl. None of my CVs are so much as scratched, so that's good.

I've detached Washington and South Dakota from the CVs into a surface group to protect the transports at Tinian. Guam fell fairly quickly and I just grabbed Pagan this turn. Saipan will have to wait. I'm wearing him down slowly at Tinian, but it's going slow. I should win in the end. Support forces are enroute to unload there.

I'm overloaded with planes on Guam. He didn't bother to develop that base very much. once I have support at Tinian and Pagan, I can spread them out a bit. I have 3 Jug squadrons at Guam, and once they're up and running, I'll start sweeping Saipan. I've moved a bunch of B-25s in from the Marshalls to deal with his ships. Hopefully, I can drive them all away Lots of Hellcats and Corsairs are also there now, so I'm pretty fighter-heavy. Lots of search planes too.

Not quite the walkover I wanted, but not a complete failure either. With my carriers re-stocked, I should wrap Saipan up in time.

I'm surprised Yamato and Musashi didn't show. He could probably do what he wants with them there right now. Looks like his carriers departed for good. I think I've for sure bagged three fleet carriers in this game. Kaga and Shokaku went down earlier. Several CVEs are toast too. KB isn't very much right now. If he hadn't parked them next to Saipan, they'd all probably be toast now.

The downer is that Washington goes down. Fuso and Yamashiro did the real work on her. Yamato did get punished good. at 3,000 yds, 16" shell cut into her good enough. Maybe an off chance she'll sink on the way back -- especially of the fires keep up. Fuso gets hers later in the day.

My fleet carriers run into a light cruiser force, but both sides were more interested in getting away.

I'm unloading support troops at Pagan next turn. An old BB force, with another destroyer group and a cruiser group are covering. Most of his surface groups are more interested in getting away at this point.

My carriers have pretty much cleared the area and are free to get back. Probably an 8 day trip to Pearl. I'm worried that everyone will have enough supply before my big trip back.

One lingering enemy unit on Pagan. Shock attacking there next turn. I'm also shocking on Tinian to try and end that affair.

Looking back on this, I wasn't expecting a heavy fighter presence on his end. That's pretty much what saved all his carriers. Not sure if he shuttled them in quickly form the Philippines or not. That's pretty much what wrecked my naval air. I'll get everyone re-fitted and out again as soon as possible. I'm overstacked with planes on Guam right now, but if I get units set up on Pagan, I'll transfer a bunch over. I'm counting on my P-47s to clear his fighters out once they're unpacked from the crates.

I think it's some months out before any real carriers arrive, so I got what I got, which is still formidable. They're all alive, anyway. Once I finally clear everyone out and secure the area, I can scour the region with planes, making supply to Truk more difficult. I can probably hit Luzon first quarter of 1944. Securing Luzon will pretty much turn the tap off for him.

08 September 1943

I think I've finally got my forces separated from his. It was a long running fight and he had several surface groups hounding my ships all the way out. Lots of transports took hits, but I think actual losses were minimal.

The butcher's bill is pretty high, however.

So far in the game, I've definitely claimed Kaga, Zuikaku and Hiyo. I know other fleet carriers took some good hits, so I may have to wait for confirmation.

Some CVEs are confirmed dead, namely: Hosho, Taiyo and Unyo, Brazil Maru/Hayato. As above, I'm sure others got hit, too.

In this fight, I've sunk Mutsu and Kirishima, while Fuso succumbed to aerial torpedoes. Yamato left the scene under heavy fires, so there's a chance she'll go down too. A couple turns ago, Avengers hit Musashi with five bombs, but I doubt that will sink her. Like Yamato, she was with a small group of CLs/DDs. She also disappeared after the air strike. Maybe he's worried they come back with torps.

CA Tone fell to gunfire while Myoko fell to surface torpedoes. Another 3 CLs died to gunfire.

I would like to walk away happy from that, but alas, my losses were worse. Lexington and Yorktown both fell to aerial torpedoes. Funny how I don't remember that happening. Must be age...

Battleship losses were heavy. Maryland, Colorado, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Mississippi, North Carolina, Washington, Indiana, Prince of Wales and Revenge all fell. Only 2 CAs and 1 CL were sunk.

Guam is firmly under control. About a third of my Jugs were up and running and I swept Tinian with them and inflicted heavy losses with them for little loss on my end. Once the rest are unboxed, I'll sweep until his fighters are gone there. He can't really handle the 47 at max altitude. I'll keep the Hellcats and Corsairs for CAP. Supply should last until I get a relief force in.

On Tinian, I've only a 50 AV advantage over him, so I'm stalemated for now. The good news is that barring a serious effort on his part, I'm not going anywhere either.

Pagan is secure and safe with fighters guarding overhead. I'm keeping all bombers to a 2 hex range, since I don't want them hitting ships at Saipan, where fighter strength is heavy.

I'm guessing a month before a return visit. Bunker Hill arrives in Panama in 15 days, so she'll probably join the fun. Head to head, without being near a ground base, he can't really match up against me at this point.

Subs claimed two tankers and an xAK this turn. Good to see the fuel ships sink.

I've sortied 8 USN subs from Calcutta. 6 are enroute to block off Rangoon. 2 went down to guard Palembang.

Wear and tear on my carriers is surprisingly light, so they'll get fixed up quickly. I can probably convert more squadrons to SB2Cs. I'll be a bit more circumspect on my return trip and not let his land based air decimate my bombers

09 September 1943

Two days in a row without an encounter, so I think my ships are clear.

Tennessee is only 3 hexes from Pagan, only able to make a knot. Damage is heavy, so her safe return is problematic.

Some of the earlier departing ships are reaching Pearl already, the first being some cruisers. 3 battleships, including the French fossil, Lorraine will arrive in 3 days. A CVE arrived this turn. Most of the rest are about halfway to Midway.

I've moved a bunch of bombers up to Eniwetok and will hit the port at Truk next turn. He only has about 20 fighters there now. I had to make space for them, sending fighters to Roi-Namur and the dive bombers to Marcus. I need more punch at Marcus anyway.

My first landing command and control ship doesn't arrive for a month yet. I would have liked to have here supervise round 2 in the Marianas. She'll work for Luzon, though. With their sufficient prep, my losses landing at Guam and Tian were pretty minimal. I've got plenty of new transports waiting at Pearl to go again. I've had a constant line of assault AKs continuously arriving there from the States. I'll have to decide whether to embed battleships with the landing ships or send them as a close escort.

I should have enough Jugs at Guam to do a sweep of Tinian next turn. I'll grind him down to nothing and then work on Saipan.

Most of my forces are nearing Midway, so they're safe. I've detached my carriers from escort, so they'll be back in Pearl in 5 days.

He's had cruisers bombarding Wake the last few days, which is keeping my Jug count low. Regardless, they're sweeping well.

I'm running low on lightnings. Production seems rather limited with them. I converted one squadron to P-47s, but they won't have the range to get to Rabaul. I do have a bunch of 38Es in the pool, but they're a maintenance nightmare, relatively speaking.

I'm waiting to hear on Shokaku yet. I know she got smoked pretty bad before. I doubt she survived, but I have no confirmation yet. Yamato could be a bonus too.

A pair of IJN AMCs are cruising the waters west of Karachi near the map edge and have hit some of my returning cargo ships.

I've moved a bunch of search planes to the island up there and have dispatched a CA, CL and two DDs to intercept. I may be meeting them next turn, so hopefully I can finish them off. They're comfortable spotted and he has no clue what's on the way.
