Jojo Rabbit

A very, very nice film imo, at times funny, sad, unexpected and sweet. I see the film had its critics - but these seem to be people too full of their own self importance to even understand that there are many ways to tell a tale. No, this was no heavy weight, but it still had oodles of charm that still conveyed the key message:

- Hitler was a twat (and so were his cronies)
- Nazi ideology was pathetic and absurd
- (shock horror) yes, there were some 'good' Germans

I would recommend this if you have a sense of humour.

I really appreciated Steve Buscemi’s role as Nikita Khrushchev.

Yes. Back in the day I only saw the first season. Thought it was time to watch the second one, but decided to begin with season one. I often find that the shows I like are terminated way to early.

wow, I can't believe I missed this one, a hardcore horror movies fan. IMDB: 7.3, has to be good.

I will share the last one I enjoyed:

Jallikattu. Indian movie, amazing cinematography, really good portrait of an Indian village. No bollywood garbage (songs, dance etc.) but good cinema.

I finally watched "Hereditary"

wow, I can't believe I missed this one, a hardcore horror movies fan. IMDB: 7.3, has to be good.

It deserves much more than that. My mark would be around 8.5. The "problem" with the movie is that the director shows a lot and tells little - so, in a way, we are not used anymore to this way of telling stories.

The actors, BTW, are astounding. Pay attention and you will see the real emotions shimmering behind the facade. Gabriel Byrne, for example (one of my favourite actors) hasn't a lot of screen time here, but he is wonderful at... not really "appearing". In a way, no one is really surprised by Tony Collette screaming madly... Byrne instead tries to be the "normality" and the "rationality" balancing the spiral of insanity his family is descending in. When he finally breaks down he is painful to watch.

Recently Martin Scorsese put "Hereditary" among his favourite movies. He is fully right when he says that this is "Ordinary People" with a streak of horror. Some of the best horror movies are those who would work as dramas even if you pull the horror element out of them - and this is one of the best examples in this genre.

The Great

Two episodes in and I'm really enjoying this. Its very, very loosely based on Catherine the Great and the her marriage to the Tsar Peter.

Ellie Fanning is very good as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult marvellously hams it up as the total moron of a Tsar.

If one doesn't have expectations of historical accuracy, but just wants a rollicking and entertaining story, then this appears perfect to fit the bill so far.

The Truth About Franco, Spain's Forgotten Dictatorship PBS America

Watched this four part documentary. Very watchable, relatively high level program on General Franco, his life and crimes - er I mean times. Worth watching I feel, although perhaps I expected more about the Civil War/World War II than there was.

He certainly fitted the mould of all dictators; he was something of an inadequate murderous twat.

And continuing watching old films. Just watched The Golden Child, and Gotcha!.

Hitler's Children BBC4

Another superb BBC4 offering. This documentary focused on the children, grandchildren, and one-great niece, of Himmler, Frank, Goethe, Hoess and Goering.

The moving piece centred on the feelings of guilt, shame, horror and whole manner of other negative emotions that have tortured those relatives of some of the most hideous 'humans' ever to have stained planet earth.

The grandson of Hoess - commandant of Auschwitz - was one of the saddest stories. There were pictures of his dad - a pre-teenager during the war - spending idyllic family time at their villa. A villa whose garden wall was the perimeter of Auschwitz... His dad (the happy smiling child in the pictures) grew up a cold, austere, denier of Nazi guilt who showed no love nor affection to his children... In some ways even sadder was the grand niece of Goering, who loved her grandmother as a little girl - only to find later that she was another that denied the Holocaust and denounced the tales from the camps as 'lies'.

What a legacy.

Mmmmm. I watched this not knowing anything about it - other than the blurb that said it was about a fading film star (DiCaprio) in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

So I saw it had a good cast and gave it a go. I must admit I was pretty disappointed and don't really know what to think of it - particularly the ending and the whole Sharon Tate thing.

So I saw it had a good cast and gave it a go. I must admit I was pretty disappointed and don't really know what to think of it - particularly the ending and the whole Sharon Tate thing.

V. Strange.....

It was Tarantino's latest installment of melding Spaghetti Western revenge themes with alternate history (previous being Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds). He did better when he stuck to pure Spaghetti Western - Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill.

Watched Shooting Fish yesterday with my parents. We all liked it and I think it had aged fairly well. Especially considering it had some central computer elements in the story.

I watched the four Shrek films with the little warspites over the last few Sundays.

Shrek 1 and Shrek 2 are as brilliantly funny and endearing as they ever were, Shrek 4 is not quite up to the same high standard but is still a very good film.... and then there is Shrek 3. I mean what the hell? So many good ideas throughout the film.... but the dialogue, the jokes, the whole thing just fell flat...How was it possible to make every scene so desperately unfunny?

Continuing to watch old films with my parents. We just watched The Untouchables, and Léon: The Professional.
