Also, when the films **** with my mind I get annoyed when they do it the cheating, lazy, way. That is, of course, in my own humble opinion. [:D]

Just got The Pacific in the mail from my dad.

So the plan is to binge watch it starting tonight.

Just finished watching Your Honor (Sky Atlantic). A very watchable story in 10 parts about an honourable judge (nicely played by Bryan Cranston) who turns to crime to save his 17-year old son after the latter accidentally kills the son (also 17) of a local crime boss.

I didn't see the ending coming, which was quite clever. Recommended

Chanced across this engrossing video.
It is a short (12 minutes) animated
film which details the genesis of Cargo Cults
in WWII's Southwest Pacific.



Nice animation, good sound track and
quirky off-beat subject matter makes
this one a pleasure.

There is something about this region
that grabs my attention. Several times
whilst reading memoirs, the authors
mention jungle "Spirits".

First, in a contemptuous, "Those silly
superstitious natives" kind of manner.

Which later, as the soldiers move deeper
into the jungle's infinite gloom, morphs
into a palpable psychic dread.

I just had to watch "2001 A Space Odessey"
first saw it in 1968

I remember when it was re-released in 2001 for a limited run. I took a train and went to see it in Rome, on one of the biggest screens in all Italy. It was stunning.

My favorite 2001 trivia is the tablet.
An astronaut had tossed a tablet casually
across a flat surface and it was just
laying there, playing back some video.

But, of course nothing back then could
play video from such a slim package.

They had cut a hole into the surface and installed
a small TV underneath to make the tablet seem like it was
a functional device.

Just got round to watching this. Not bad, but perhaps 8 episodes was stretching it a little?

The series is based on a real life killer - Charles Sobhraj - in Southeast Asia (mainly Thailand) in the 1970's. His victims were mostly backpackers, who he robbed and murdered.

He had a French Canadian female accomplice, and it was disconcerting to see Jenna Coleman play a villain. No, no, no BBC!

The Thai authorities were seemingly not interested in the murders of western travellers, but Sobhraj was finally caught thanks, in no small part, to a Dutch diplomat who, angered by the death of two Dutch travellers who were burnt alive, decided to take matters into his own hands.

Recommended.

Just finished re watching a horror series, The Strain.

I watched Zack Snyder's Justice League. I didn't watch the original cut so I started with a clean slate. My honest opinion: it is terrible.

First and foremost: nothing happens. Four hours in a world of superheroes, ancient civilizations and evil demons give us only two decent battles (the final one is really cool but you need three hours and half to get there).

I was told that D.C. movies were supposed to be "edgier". If "edgier" means "take a Marvel movie and discard the fun parts (and half of the colors)", then JL is edgier.

What surprised me the most is how "empty" this movie is on a multitude of levels. It is empty of contents. Empty of plot twists (there are no plot twists at all actually). Empty of characterization. Even the World itself is eerily empty.

Cyborg causes city block-wide blackouts and no one cares. A superpowered battle with death rays and explosions happens right in the middle of Metropolis and the maximum that the US government can deploy are two soldiers and a policemen. The heroes initiate an all-out war against the baddies in Russia and no one shows up there either... The litany of idiotic or patently absurd plot points could fill pages (Superman just can't see from orbit that there is an all-out superpowered war going on in Russia: he must land and ask Alfred what's going on).

I know that this is a superhero movie. I actually like them when they are well done. The first Iron Man and the Avengers were fun. The Winter Soldier reached an unexpected level of quality. My favourite superhero is Doctor Strange and I was very happy with his movie. For some reasons I didn't connect with Guardians of the Galaxy but I recognise that it is a question of taste.

ZS's JL is a stupid scene, followed by nothing, followed by a stupid scene, followed by nothing, followed by a battle scene caused by a stupid reason, followed by nothing... At the end, it is a demo-reel of the best that Zack Snyder can technically do. If this is what you are looking for then you will be happy. Still, IMHO, Snyder was even better than here in Sucker Punch. That movie had more flair, spirit and even a sense of sheer, anarchic fun amid the drama totally missing here.

I liked Sucker Punch and I sighed here. Maybe I'm becoming a grumpy old man.

The Terror (BBC)

Just finished watching this series. It is based on a book that tells a story of the loss of HMS Terror and HMS Erebus along with all 129 men, while trying to find the Northwest Passage, in the 1840's. I say a story because no one knows exactly what happened to the men.

What is known (from a scribbled note) is that the leader of the expedition, Sir John Franklin, had already died when the remaining crew abandoned the ice bound ships and headed south.

Few remains and evidence has been found that actually tell us much (the ships themselves have been found in the last few years).

One theory - seemingly backed up by looking at some human remains, is that there was a problem with the solder on the tinned food and this led to lead poisoning.

There is a good cast; Ciaran Hinds, Tobias Menzies (always good at playing the oaf), Greta Sacchi and the always excellent Jared Harris.

Recommended.

You've only just got The Terror over there? Slack.

Great production but they botched the horror elements. The book had combined the known events and the horror superbly.

Good apocalyptic entertainment for an evening.

This is such a good book. The author is worth keeping up with.
