Possibly you are being a bit predictable?

There are a lot of airbases and ports that are suitable in the DEI, and though its nice to grab the best ones, it also shines like a beacon to the Allied player which way you are going.

With your losses so far, especially in the irreplaceable CA, maybe a more methodical, and well protected advance is needed?

Re: the Japanese night fighting capabilities - their long lances dominate when the range is ~ 4000 yards or less. Your engagements were starting at ranges around 9,000 yards which indicates bright moonlight. The British were also well trained at night fighting and their gunnery was very good. At this stage in the war the American gunnery at night only seems to do well when an unlucky ship is set on fire. This is historical - one of the shortcomings of US night fighting was that every ship fired on the easiest target [closest or on fire] leaving others unengaged to launch their torps. He has likely also replaced his TF commanders with highly-skilled ones who manoeuver to avoid torps.

After the bloody turn of yesterday, today was pretty quiet. I had transfered Netties at Kota Bharu, ready to hit his cruisers at Singa while my zeros had swept the skies.... no joy. Q-Ball, smarter than a fox, predicted my move and moved back to Batavia all his SCTFs...
My netties attacked his PT boats near Mersing....[:(] idiots!

The 21st Division, reinforced with elements of the 56th, conquered Kuantan and now we're already marching in the interior roads of mid-Malaya.

Our Pelmbang invasion TFs stayed out of range of his bombers and are regrouping under the compassionate smile of CV Kaga (now a CAP platoform).

kates have been moved at singawang but the AF is still out of order....

Guam is ours and our landing at Rabaul went pretty well. We shot down 3 Catalinas that probably were evacuating the base to PM (we found only 1 enemy LCu there!).... tomorrow Rabaul will be ours and a base force is already unloading.

The 2nd Mindanao invasion is now 2 days far away from Davao...

In Luzon we sunk 4 xAKLs trying to resupply Manila...

In Burma things are more or less statlemated...he penetrated with chindits ante-litteram into my supply lines, slowing me down once again

In China we conquered Kukong and are sieging Chushieng... but for the rest he managed to slow me down enough to more or less stop me everywhere...

CA Ashigara is almost sunk...3 hexes from Saigon her pumps stopped and now the flooding is up to 80...with still 35 fires aboard...she won't make it....[:(][:(]

The other CAs should be safe....but they are going to stay out of the war for a long time... their loss is really an hard hit to take...

Kongos arrived at Camra Bay...only to find out that they cannot reload there.... how can i be so stupid!?!?!?... well, now the AKE is 2 hexes from Camra and another naval HQ should arrive within 2 days...but we keep on losing days on our scheldue...and december is almost over now.... Q-Ball is really showing me how an allied player should play!!

Yes, i'm surely predictable...but i'm trying not to make any major mistake and advance with calm... I'm trying to be methodical mate...but the last naval engagements clearly put me off scheldue... how can i keep on advancing without 5 CAs?... and, above all, the loss of 5 CAs hasn't been countered by the loss of his surface assets...he only lost CA Exeter... the rest is still fighting and, now, in the SRA-DEI he has forces superior than mine....

However we'll soldier on. We have to attrit him to the point where he can no longer fight....and to do that i need to use my netties in a better way....but he's being very smart in avoiding any situation where his fleet could be caught out of air cover...
Untill Singapore is up and fighting my situation won't improve much i guess

Don't know mate. In my last game i took great care in chosing the BEST captains for my british ships and the best admirals for my SCTFs....Rader's CA and CLs simply chased me down and sink every single ship i had...engagement after engagement... even his DDs were able to knock out my capital ships... Now it's exactly the opposite.
However i'm pretty sure it has simply been bad luck in a couple of dice and rolls.... let's don't get scared and wait for the fortune to change side...it will![;)]

I guess this is more of a general question to IJN fanboys. What are the old slow BB's doing this time of the war? Wouldn't the Fuso and Yanashiro make good convoy escorts? Heck, they might be useful in hunting down escaping ships. They are not fast but they do pack a punch.

IMO, you have started playing chess as White (Japan) just after being shown how the pieces move against a well seasoned player who known most of the standard opening moves as White (Japan). Your lack of experience is showing, but I do commend you for trying to play Japan without even a game or two against the AI to get your feet wet. [&o][&o]

I did not do enough in prepping you for some "what if" options if you felt that landing at Mersing was too much a gamble. A quick decision to land at Kuantan could have been done on the 9th or 10th at the latest. As soon as you saw either/or AVG or P-40s on Malaya, I would have shifted Zeros from Takao over to Malaya. Brad was able to use just AVG and P-40s over Singapore and await the chance to sacrifice his Buffalo in an escort mission with his TBs.

A strong counter by the Allies around Malaya would have had me react by diverting the warships and carriers leaving Hiroshima to head over there for a strong counter OR head for Babeldoab with them and a division or two from Japan to make a quick push into the eastern SRA and and try to be off the southern tip of Java by the end of December or early January.

Kuching would have been a good second choice if you felt Singkawang was too risky. The main purpose was to get an Air HQ with Nell/Betties on the northern coast of Borneo to project power.

If you have only had 1 CA sunk, it will hurt now, but you will be able to overcome that.

The problem is that the Air HQ is too late at Singkawang. No good timing. And Q-Ball used it.
Think next time it will arrive earlier [:)]

So, back to Mike, John, and seille points: since the goal of the allies is to throw the IJ timetable off and since the targets are well known, when playing against someone like QBall you have to think through how to accomplish the stated goal above, and then how to counter it.  As Mike suggests, it means you need to have some reaction forces in place and when QBall shows where his forces are you either react directly against those forces or indirectly by striking where he isn't.
 
The strategic depth here is considerable and very daunting to a new player.  If nothing else, you are not intimately familiar with all of your forces.  A player like Mike can rattle off not only all of his starting forces, but also what he can buy out and when.  This enables him to come with effective counters rapidly, and then choose the best of his available options.
 
Really good players like PzB, Nemo and some others set traps to eliminate the few allied assets.  Once you have Boise, Marblehead, Houston, Repulse, and PoW taken care of, the allies don't have too many other potent early weapons.  At least nothing that will be able to stand up to a couple of your CA's.  However, while those forces are in the DEI, all of your landings need to be protected against those devils.  [8D]
 
PS: and QBall is member of the elite players group.  So, not only is he aware of all of this, if you do trap him once, he will adapt quickly.

I´m sure Greyjoy will learn a lot in these turns as he did in the last game. And he´ll give Q-Ball a good fight.

Bombardment missions put large dents in airfields... Sometimes you get lucky and tap into parked enemy AC or supply depots.

If you want to work contested waters with slower SCTFs, I'd move lotsa subs with aircraft and get them in the air for naval search. Use land based search AC also - anything you can to boost up detection levels. Set those Big-Boy TFs to patrol irregularly and give them a decent reaction setting. When planning your patrol route keep a safe distance from large enemy ports with mines... I've had SCTF "follow" enemy TFs right into those mine-infested ports. When my BBs hit mines it really hurts my feelings.

They are useful as Amphib escorts and to use as traps for the Houston/Boise/Marblehead.

CA Ashigara sunk right when she reached saigon port....really a loss that will hurt me.

However we're again on the run. Our amhib TFs are approaching Palembang from Singkawang... on the 24th we repulsed the first air attacks coming from Singapore... 20 enemy torpedo bombers and P-40s are shot down for no loss on our side... i fear, no i know, that his surface forces are lingering in the shadows... as i know that he still has 60 fighters at Singapore and nearly 80 bombers between Palembang and Singa... we're going to risk... The kongos are running at flank speed to reach the Kaga's group and join this decisive battle... subs are dispacthed all over the approcahing routes... 50 Netties and 27 Kates are based at Singkawang, along with 40 fighters...torpedo are loaded...let's hope for the best

60 Sallies will try to shut down Singapore AF, escorted by 20 Oscars and preceeded by 20 zeros on Sweep from Kota Bahru...


My second Mindanao invasion force has landed...we should finish the Mindanao campaign within the next 2 weeks.

More forces are gathered for Menado.

Rabaul fell, and we already estabilished there a decent base force with 21 zeros and 20 Betties with 6 Mavis. Air HQ is on its way...

In China things are getting a little bit better...near Canton we're flanking a strong enemy's army and we're cleaning our interior lines in the northern plains...

In Malaya 2 more divisions have landed at Singora, along with 50k supplies. Now we have 5 divisions there.... but we're still moving slowly...

Man...i'm really tense for the upcoming battle for Palembang....[X(]

Well, guys, i know i should'nt have picked up Q-Ball for my first japanese game.... but challenge is what really makes us better.... so i think i'm gonna lose, but i'm gonna learn a lot! [:D] 
 
However i really like this game. The air war is defenetly more realistic than my other game... smaller groups, smaller fights...more dispersed fight...COOL!
 
It's also true that i don't know my assets...i'm using nearly 20% of my ships...i'm trying to save as much fuel as possible... and also i'm not using well my subs.... they are barely spotting a single ship all around the map! I've always been bad with subs...but i hoped that, using the japanese ones, things could have gone better...but Q-Ball knows the right routes...he knows where i like to place my ships and act accordingly....will learn! I promise, i will learn!
 
Now....let's see if Kaga gets hit by those bloody torpedo bombers or if she manages to survive and help our invasion forces to get to Palembang safely!

In northern Malaya, the capture of this base is key as you can now rail units in and from here south to Singapore, you have roads to move more quickly. Make sure to have most of your troops in "Move" Mode mode unless they are in a hex with enemy troops. They move faster and you have little risk of being bombed from the air. If he does, use your Nates as LRCAP.

Once you capture Georgetown, I expand the Heavy Industry to 25. Singapore goes from 75 to 100 range.

Brad moved to Palembang several cruiser TFs... that engaged my screening DD flottillas.... we lost 4 DDs...but at least the dreaded cruisers didn't manage to get close to our CVs and our transports...

Then, during the day, our bombers were distracted by several storms around the Palembang area...and we didn't manage to catch them as we wished...however we delivered few good hits[;)]

His bombers didn't engage...strange! But at Palembang the a/c number rose incredibly!...88 bombers and 24 bran new fighters....

We bombed Singapore for the first time...no CAP once again...and we achieved a good result...

Davao fell to our 16th Army...very well...

And we also paradropped a regiment at Wenchow...north of Canton...we may be able to take the base tomorrow, closing the escape route for 4 chinese corps chinese Canton!
