One thing I noticed recently in my game is that TFs which include BBs seem to be much more skittish about going in range of enemy air attack. I had several TFs charging to try catch some damaged enemy carriers (one of which could still operate aircraft). All the TFs were set "direct/absolute" and "retirement allowed", all had great, aggressive commanders, and all were running at full speed.

At the end of the turn the BB TF turned out to be the max distance it could be AWAY from the enemy CVs. It still had the target hex I set to go to, and the TF route included a big jog around the new position of the enemy carriers. The routing was reset to normal/absolute. The TF commander? - Chester Nimitz!

Understood, but this attack run is under a permanent cloud of Allied fighters and has been made many times. The fast CL TF only got 3 hexes out of the 5. I think somebody sabotaged the fuel oil. [:'(]

The troops must rest and resupply. AT Kunming itself the troops have sufficient supply and will attack tomorrow, but the odds are worse. Our units on the road to the Chungking plain are fully in contact with the withdrawing enemy but, maddeningly, must wait for more supply.

The sweeps over China found no opposition at all. Enemy death gliders did attack our southern armoured unit and were punished to a degree for their insult. Disruption is 43% and a number of tanks are damaged. They will head NE into the woods for better cover. At least one, but probably both of the enemy units there are withdrawing back into Canton. Our air strikes on defensive positions around Wuchow were very effective, causing many casualties. Imperials at Liuchow and Nanning are still seen withdrawing. Most of our forces to assault Nanning are in place across the river but two Bde are at Lang Son, having just arrived.

The 50th Para destroyed its opposition.

The first attack is tomorrow. The next attack at Naha will wait until the day after so that full naval bombardment support can be provided. Although I am sure that some bombardments will go in tonight, all the old battleships have ops points used and some have high ops points used, so it's unlikely that all ordered bombardments will make it.

Wave after wave of Japanese bombers, all without escort, angled for our troops at Naha. I suspect they were trying to spoil a ground assault. Some ordnance was dropped and in one case found its mark, but the results were lacking. Our troops are in great shape but the same cannot be said for the Empire's bomber fleet. See air losses below. AV at Naha is 2,076.

There is now adequate supply to attack on the road from Tsuyung to the Chungking plain. SE of Kunming we still must wait for supply.

It looks as though Nanning and defensive positions nearby are being totally abandoned! Our forces arraying across the river from Nanning will begin moving at once without waiting for additional units. Nanning shows as 5 units and 10,500 troops and the hex to east (near Liuchow) as 11 units 35,000 troops. Over near Wuchow the armor will reach the hex across the river first and will attack if the IJA unit is still there. The 7 infantry divisions are marching as fast as they can but are lagging behind. Recon shows 8,600 troops in Wuchow, and the B-24 groups are inflicting hundreds of casualties per day.

On the Malay Peninsula, Kota Bharu will be assaulted tomorrow while the main advance races for Kuala Lumpur.

Merak capitulated before sunrise, and both attacks on Java went well.

The troops are in good shape and will continue the assault tomorrow. None of the battleships made their bombardment runs due to ops points expended rearming, but they will hit both Tokunoshima and Naha tomorrow. The cruisers are being diverted to hit Naha as will the Iowas to support tomorrow's attack there. 2,097 AV at Naha with disruption all in the low single digits will make that attack.

The very first units of the Amami Oshima invasion are loading at Hansa Bay. Other units are transferring in the Marianas for combat loading.

A number of CVE began their AA upgrades at Pearl Harbor. CVL Langley just finished repairs there and is heading for Guam with a batch of new Sumner class destroyers.

What is your take on the apparent abandonment of Nanning and the nearby defensive positions? DO you think he's trying to concentrate his defenses so he can keep Canton/Hong Kong/Liuchow for longer?

Tokunoshima seems like a possible early conquest. Not much resistance there. Naha, well, that's another matter. But the frequency of your attacks there is quite good!

Tokunoshima seems like a possible early conquest. Not much resistance there. Naha, well, that's another matter. But the frequency of your attacks there is quite good!

I think with the number of troops heading past the road junction that also forks up to Liuchow, he realized that the Allies had the combat power to run in and grab Liuchow, which would have isolated a bunch more troops at Nanning. Not pocketed them, but caused them to do some off road marching to the interior before they could rejoin any defense nearer the coast. And I had a TD Bn actaully moving to cross the river plus two Australian divisions that were about to follow. I was going to interpose one or both divisions on the road between Nanning and Liuchow and possibly send one across the river into Liuchow. Clear terrain with lots of air strikes, I think they would have crossed OK.

Changsha shows movement SW (rail to Kukong?), Kukong shows movement SE (fastest road to Canton or to set up a fallback defensive line?), plus the withdrawals in the mountains. So, yes I think he's reorganizing the defenses. More than a little this time, because I think it became evident that the Allies were (are) about to punch through at Wuchow with enough power to capture Canton/Hong Kong. With the further ability to contain the whole Nanning area until convenient the Allies could then push further up the valuable coast while the Nanning area troops were not a factor in the defense at all. Unused.

At the moment my plan is to have the armor race around Canton to close all hex sides. The possible exception is the one toward Hong Kong because the river crossing would be deadly. Same with the west hex side, but I will have an armoured unit there.

Tokunoshima I think will be captured with this attack. Naha, I think the second attack. More predictions to get wrong! [:D]

Our armor will attack the lone IJA unit in the forest across the river from Wuchow, provided it does not slip away. 854 casualties were claimed by the B-24 groups at Wuchow today, and tomorrow the British 4EB will stop hitting Canton airfield (100% damage) and join them.

The day after tomorrow our troops will cross the river attacking into Nanning, so tomorrow large numbers of 2EB will begin strikes there.

Continued assault tomorrow at Tokunoshima. The Avengers will aid as they will not be striking at Naha, but only a CL TF will bombard. Tokunoshima really should fall tomorrow!

All of the old battleships rearmed but have high ops points used. The Iowas have not rearmed fully. 7 more AE will arrive at Daito Shoto during the night to help the situation, plus DS just built to a size 2 port.

AV at Naha is 1,908. One division has been split up to hasten recovery of squads and two others have been put in Reserve to recover disruption. The lack of a reduction in fortifications announces that Naha is not going down easy. Even with that, the squads disabled for the Empire was a bright spot. The troops will not be ready for another attack until a few days after Tokunoshima falls, so their opposition will get all the bombardment attention prior to that next assault.
