Hey, Zulu. What you just typed might as well be Arapaho to my poor backwoods understanding of technology. That's what I mean by ignorance - I don't know what a switch is or a command line or where a switch might be found. Don't try to walk me through it. You'd need a master's degree in teaching Computers as a 19th Language.

By the way, my computer and monitor are actually three years old. Three years ago, my work computer was about to go on the frits. I bought a new one to transfer (back up) all important programs and files. Then, low and behold, my old work computer kept working like a charm. So I finally decided (three years later!) to bring the "new" computer home and use it here. Pretty whacky, eh?

It's just a store-bought mass-produced Hewlett Packard. The monitor is a HP 2311x. I think res is something like 1920 / 1080.

The tech subforum has several threads on slow scrolling/map not fitting screen, etc.
For the slow scrolling problem the - deepColor switch (make sure to capitalize the C) seems to be the cure. One of the other keys steps is to set the resolution to one that the monitor and video card both support as a native resolution - i.e. the computing required for that resolution is built into the chips inside so it can handle the display very quickly.

See my post on 11/30/15 on this issue. Even though the thread is for Win10, it covers the things you need.

Right click on the WITPAE shortcut icon on your desktop. Select properties at the bottom. It should open a page of information.

Under 'TARGET' there will be the path to run your game and immediately after that will be the switches that are being discussed.

You can add and remove these 'Switches' as necessary to make the game run more optimally.

Battle of Sumatra: Massed IJAF sweeps return to Sabang, this time with Zeroes supplmenting the Tojos. The Allies get the best of things, but it's one of those pyrric victories - 80 enemy planes downed to 60 for the Allies; 48 Tojos downed and about 20 Zeroes; but 24 F4Fs downed and some very valuable P-40Ks.

John sent a four-DD TF raiding the port. In combat with the defending CL Achilles-flagged TF, neither side scores major damage. But it's telling that John came this far forward. CL Helena will arrive tomorrow.

Yesterday, a sub near Sinabang put a TT in CA Takao. That was nice. Even better, today KXIX put another torp in her side and sinking sounds immediately registered. I'm not absolutely certain she went under (it's one of those too-good-to-be-true events), but if so, a major Allied victory.

The Allies will have 1250 AV in the junble south of Langsa facing off against at least five IJA divisions. The key wll be whether Japanese air can cause disruption to troops in the jungle (and, by the same token, whether combat ships can do so on bombardment runs).

Battle of Burma: For some reason my B-25Cs refuse to fly again, leaving the ground troops to attack without elevated disruption levels vs. the enemy. The attack fails pretty badly.

Battle of India: I"m picking up various SigInt reports that John is prepping for an attack against Ceylon and/or eastern India. This is probably a ruse, though it can't be entirely discounted. One IJA division is preparing for Viz. I have an Indian division in reserve there. An Aussie division will arrive at Aden soon. Troop transports will arrive at the same time. This unit will be theater reserve briefly, though I'll commit her to Burma fairly quickly if possible.

On His Toes: I have a few "is John alert" type missions in the offing. One will be probing deep starting tomorrow. I'm interested in seeing what happens.

After Sumatra: While the Allies remain intent on defending Sumatra successfully if possible within reason, I am also thinking about "what ifs" should it fall. John will then be feeling frisky and would have five to ten divisions available to play with. I'm not positive he'd get aggressive deep this late, but if he does then Ceylon and India would be the most likely choices. I've been attending to defense in depth/fort building with this in mind, actually going back to before my two-year sabbatical. That's why an Indian division is sitting at Viz. I think he'd be most exited about the prospect of trapping the Allied army in Burma forward. So Ramree, Akyab, Cox's Bazaar, Chittagong, Imphal, Calcutta and Viz are each garrisoned fairly strongly. Smaller bases will get some of the smaller "destroyed" units I purchased a few days. They'll begin arriving at Karachi in 25 days or so. They'll be weak, but they'll be useful in garrisoning against para-drops and in adding units to key bases so that those bases appear stronger.

Monitor: I ran the turn at work on my very old, fat, ugly monitor. It sure works 1000 times better. I tried to follow some of the suggestions posted above by thoughtful people, but it's truly like reading Arapaho. For the life of me I don't find anything labeled "switches" on my computer, whether I right click on the AE shortcut, the screen itself, or anything else in sight.

I would station her next door at Cocanada due to terrain. With Viz being clear terrain any decent naval bombardment will leave it highly disrupted and easily pushed out of hex, if it was to happen.

Right click the witp-ae icon on the desktop that is linked to the game you are currently playing.
Click properties.
Under properties screen is a line called "Target:" That line is where you add switches

That doesn't work on my computer. I've tried it several times (three or four forumites have given that menu). When I right click the witp-ae icon on my desktop (the only one that's on my desktop because it's the only game I have loaded on this computer) and click properties, there is no "Target" option. Instead, I get a menu with a number of options: General, Shortcut, Compatibility, Security and Details. I've looked through each of those with not sign of "Target" or "Switches" or anything remotely like anything I've read here or in the tech threads you guys have linked me to.

That's the trouble with being illiterate. Or obtuse. Or both.

It should show up prominently on the "shortcut" tab.

Dan may be starting from the game menu icon instead of creating a shortcut directly to the game witp-ae.exe file

Can you do that and still play one of the betas? I haven't looked at the game menu in years.

AFAIK you can have as many shortcuts pointing to as many separate mod installations as you wish. You just have to manually adjust the path to each executable file for the mod.

Oh, that "Target."

Obtuse ignorance.

Sometime tomorrow or Monday I'll start tinkering with these Switchy things and see what happens. There is a small but measurable chance I will crash the Internet worldwide.

You would then get a medal for defeating ISIS/ISIL/whatever single-handedly.

Battle of Sumatra: Japanese take Sinabang, the island just southwest of Sabang. It's a level zero airfield. Dauntlesses will target the base tomorrow to try to suppress airfield building. More Tojo sweeps today, though less in number. The Allies get the best of things again. The Allies have three combat TFs on patrol now, including one flagged by CA New Orleans, a battle scarred veteran of combat near Oz and Assam.

Battle of Burma: Finally Allied bombers take off to hit the Japanese stack south of Magwe, running into a large concentration of Tojos. I lose a bunch of SBDs and some B-25Cs. More than 40 B-25Cs hit Royal Thai Division 1/A north of Magwe. This is where I'm hoping to interdict the road between Magwe and Myitkyina. If that works, the Allies can begin to apply a bit of pressure.

Ramilles This time the BB accepted orders to retire to Capetown. This ship has been hung up in no-man's-land for more than a month, so getting her off the map will be a relief.

Toe Checker: Is John on his toes? A four-DD Allied TF just sailed between the islands off of Soerabaja undetected. Tomorrow they'll take patrol station two hexes from both Balikpapan and Samarinda. The hope is that it will stumble across a tanker or supply convoy.

If the airfield is size 0, your bombers will not fly, IIRC.
