Kirsty MacColl's outstanding version of the Kinks'
Days
The reason why this is a good thread. Someone will introduce you to an artist that you might not be familiar with.
I don't have all the details on her death. She was in a boat accident. Anyone have complete details of the accident?
She was on a holiday in Mexico, and took her son out diving in a "no boating zone" (as that area was designated for diving). When she and her son were done diving and headed up to the surface, she spotted a yacht coming directly at her son in high speed. She managed to throw her son away but was herself struck by the yacht, and died later on in the hospital.
Then to add insult to the entire deal, the guy driving the boat (in a no go zone for boats), was one of the wealthier guys in MExico, and got away with a minor fine (think the charge was use of motor vehicle in a nature reserve).
Her family started "Justice for Kirsty", and tried to get the case reopened, but they called it in in 2012 or 2013 when the Mexicans said nothing more would be done about her death.

Don't You Want Me Baby was a great song from not a favorite era in rock music for me.
The Kinks best album imo was Lola Versus Powerman and The Moneygoround. Quite a scathing concept album on the greediness of the music industry.
But alas, it seems that almost no one cares for classic rock in this thread.
2 songs from that album if anyone is interested;
The Kinks - Strangers
The Kinks - The Contenders
I like classic Rock. Its been a while since I listened to the Kinks. The2 you showcased are nice. Spent alittle time on the you tube page. Good memories. Another good one of theirs Apeman and Victoria.

I love the Kinks - the most British of the British Invasion bands.

What makes them the most British Zorch? Bit before my time so don't know much about that era (aside from some of the good toons of course).

Before my time also but I'll take a stab at the obvious.
Possibly the hat. Probably the sideburns. Definitely the jackets. [:D]

Their songs - Waterloo Sunset, Victoria, Lola, Dedicated Follower of Fashion (Carnaby Street) have lyrics about things and places unknown to most Yanks. By contrast Beatles and Stones songs seem much more familiar. If only Ray Davies hadn't punched that guy out...

Waterloo Sunset is a nice song. It was covered really well by a female - who's name escapes me (but she wrote "Can't get you out of my head" for Kylie a few years back).

Good one. Just heard this Thursday at work.
From The Kinks to The Kings. Canada has given us some great music and this song was no exception. Got some play around here back in the day but was more popular on the coasts.
The Kings - This Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide

Now I feel old Kinks were my contemporaries! Remember buying a 45 record with the songs. Now that is old. The amazing thing about them is they hate each other. At least they stated this on Dave Letterman. They then sang the song of theirs "Hate".

Just got back from seeing 'The Cure' live at the Hammersmith Apollo. They did a 3-hour long set (40+ songs). Pure genius. [&o][&o][&o]

Since I lost my holiday spirit after too many hours in the truck, I needed bells without any jingle...
