Right then - a bit of Russian music is called for.

Does anyone know what instrument would make the desperate, melancholy, sound that kicks in after about 45 seconds. It really is quite beautiful.

Shame about the rubbish video [8|]

Possibly a early Middle Eastern acoustic wind instrument in my humble opinion...and not very specfic! [:(] berto what do think?

I assumed it was some sort of traditional Russian instrument but don't really know about these things. Great sound regardless - evocative of that tortured country..

Sounds like a modern saxophone to me. Nothing "early" here at all, I don't think.

I have been recently infatuated with a band called Sirenia. I've been looking for a good full concert video of them, but so far what I've found has been of poor quality. The live performances have not only been lacking in the video department, but the quality of the singing makes me wonder if Sirenia could actually perform live. This is an awesome "official" video which for some reason I can't seem to download (it appears to download but the file contains zero bytes)

Oh, for those interested in unusual instruments with a "haunting sound" try this one from Nightwish. It's a bagpipe type instrument called a Ulithi (sp?) from Finland.

Ah, Anette-Nightwish... Have to say they lost alot when they fired Tarja [:(]
But when looking at youtube vids of Nightwish, the "best" one is ofc the misheard lyrics [:D][:D][:D]

Yea, I needed to watch this one to get it right

With my High Freq hearing loss virtually every song by anyone is incomprehensible to me unless I look up the lyrics.

The song I linked to "I Want My Tears Back" I really thought was "I want my desert... I want my desert NOW" [:D] Shades of Pink Floyd... "how can you have your pudding if you can't eat your meat"...

For some weird reason, whenever I hear that line, I think about Monty Python. Guess it just sounds like something they would say [:D]

Okay here are two pieces of music that always bring a tear to the eye for three reasons

a) they are astoundingly sad [:(]
b) the films from which they came are ball-breakingly sad [:(]
and c) and most important of all - I CANNOT BUY THEM [:@][&:][:-]

Speaking of ball-bouncingly beautiful music. Here is the Finnish maestro Sibelius and his 5th Symphony.

Listen to the short section from 1:22 until 3:15 - tis astonishingly beautiful - but why so short??

Tarja? Is she the woman that sung on Ever Dream? If so then she has a cracking voice [:)] Why would you lose a voice like that?

The original version, yes. Anette sings it from time to time, but has to change some of the notes to be able to sing it.
From what I've read, the band did not go well together with Tarja's husband, and she also said she wanted to go her own way some place down the line.
A big loss for Nightwish. Anette is not bad, do not get me wrong, but if you listen to say Nemo with Tarja and the same song with Anette, it is clear that Tarja had a far better range in her voice.

Battle Born

Proof that Gene Simmons is wrong though, rock and metal is not dying, and good songs still being produced these days [:D]

I am systematically working my way down this entire list, ripping the "top tracks" off Spotify with SoundForge and adding to my Sansa MP3 player to while away my night time insomnia.

http://metalholic.com/metalholics-top-2 ... etal-2014/

Then I'll be working backwards to the 2013 and 2012 lists to pick up anybody who wasn't on the current list because they hadn't released a new album in 2014 (Nightwish, for example, is missing from this list).

Who would have thought I'd turn into a "Metalhead" at my age [:D]

It'a new frontier musically for me with female lead singers making it a lot more accessible for me.

Edit: As to the ripping with SoundForge, I don't have the battery power or the room with my satellite data cap to just stream the music 24/7... so ripping is my only option. Buying CD's is out of the question on my income (the $10 a month for Spotify taxes me some months). [:(]

OK, this group totally blew my mind... not sure if in a good way or not [:D]

Japanese girl trio group called "Babymetal"

Metaholic's top 25 added them because you either hate them or love them and either way they have had an impact.

Worth a watch... I've never seen or heard anything like this before. Seriously... you can't miss this one [:D]

A while ago there was a series of posts about Sarah Brightman and some of her music. I don't think this one was mentioned - but needs to be.

If you love her beautiful voice, have your heart tugged by the strings, you will go weak at the knees over the brass section at around 3:00 minutes. Simply. Beautiful.

Sarah Brightman - My Hear Will Go On (sung in Italian).

The film was a bigger pile of steaming cack than Pearl Harbor, but this track is just....wow!
