Early 1943. A massive assault will soon be underway. The knockout blow will come from the left. Here I have Able Company, with Charlie Company echeloned behind it. The plan is simple : we will smash through the enemy's right and roll them up from the south. No subtlety whatsoever. The attached Army company will roll straight up the jungle trail and pin the enemy center (hopefully). On the right, Bravo Company has the furthest to travel. They simply have to keep contact with the Army on their left and maintain forward progress.

Here's a view of our left wing poised on their start lines. We will be preceded by a bombardment from three artillery battalions (one 155mm and two 105mm). No air support is available due to weather conditions.

We're advancing through a damned monsoon at 6 in the morning. Visibility is limited to 250 yards, and progress is very slow. Everyone's nerves are on edge. The jungle is thick , so we will come within point-blank range of enemy positions without warning.

In other words, the entire battalion is walking straight into an ambush.

Turn 6. Contact made. Some enemy units expose themselves by opening fire prematurely. Apparently the Japanese are as edgy as we are.
