I was right, its Midway

multiple transports and escorts heading 090. battleforce offshore, carriers northwest. its now apparent that bruno is going for midway.

So B-man is gonna hit Midway. Recon says theres at least 3 invasion forces, with multiple AKs and escorts. theyre all headed for this tiny lil atoll. the presence of Imperial flatttops and battlebarges is confirmed. but how many carriers? and how many planes?

i believe Bruno may be trying to pull a Midway trap on me, as yamamoto historically attempted. Fortunately the performance of the 3 Marine Def Bns was above expectations, and hes probably going to lose at least 3 DDs. and DD losses are losses he cant afford, it will of course deprive him of ASW escorts, a type the IJN is more or less defficient in, fast ASW escort destroyers.

Why you may ask am i throwing these pilots into the fray? using them as cannon fodder? several reasons...

1. they will wear out his fighters
2. they will force him to hit the airstrip on Midway
3. they will build up exp quickly
4. some of them may get lucky and plant a 500 pounder on a carrier, or even multiple 500 pounders
5. i can afford the losses, he cant
6. attrit his Zeroes, even with the bonus
7. the transports will also be hit and they dont react well to 500 pounders

Now, again, i believe hes trying to lure me into a major naval engagement, in order to lure my carriers and sink them. he appears to have a decent number of zeroes present so i believe:

1. he has bulked up his airgroups with additional zeroes
2. he has at least 2 or 3, possibly 4 carriers

there havent been that many bombers flown off, so i believe:

1. hes holding back some airgroups on stand down
2. he may have some AC on ASW, for fear of my boats due to being so close to Pearl

thus i also believe that hes holding back some planes in the hope of making me believe that theres only 2 maybe 3 carriers there instead of perhaps 5 or 6 or more, and that hes trying to lure me into a false sense of security, to bring out my carriers, so he can sink them.

i believe hes baiting me with midway as yamamoto did historically. albeit a bit transparent, but there it is. hes trying to lure me into a battle on his terms. im not taking that bait. he also may be trying to lure forces to Pearl, in hopes of weakening the west coast. thus based on wat it appears is happening, and yes i know the trap inherent in that, my reaction will consist of the following, tempered by the possibilities...

Hawaii:

1. Hawaii will be reinforced and resupplied heavily, convoys are already arriving
2. mines will be laid heavily
3. all operational aircraft will be on 100 % naval search to maximum range
4. all fighters on full alert, 100% CAP
5. all submarines sortie
6. carriers remain in harbor
7. in the event of an apparent invasion of midway, carrier fighters will be transferred to Pearl on 100% CAP
8. some 60 additional fighters will be brought in from the west coast
9. Fortifications will be expanded


Midway Area:

1. All available submarines are being concentrated in the waters around Midway to scout and attack carrier and other naval forces
2. additional bombers have been flown in
3. fortifiations are being expanded to at least lvl 4
4. non aggressive commanders have been replaced with skilled, aggressive commanders, including the airgroups
5. supplies and troops are being flown in Via Pearl-Johnston Island-Midway route
6. all AC that can, at 100% search
7. B17s at 10% naval search


Johnston Island:

1. catalinas have been transferred in to relay supplies and troops from Pearl
2. fortifications are being strengthened


Overall Plan:

Being that i believe bruno is trying to lure me into an engagement on his terms, which i am certain to lose at this point in time, i intend to turn it around on him. i will keep the carriers at Pearl, training, training, and training. i will dangle them there, and strengthen Pearl, and use it as my own lure to try and provoke another Pearl raid, or invasion, by his no doubt strengthened KB, a fight he will take heavy losses in, especially AC. i will have at LEAST 200 fighters at Pearl, ready to fight, and additional troops behind lvl 7 forts at least, with a pile of supplies, defended by hundreds of mines, covered by dozens of bombers...


Operation Fortitude is now in effect...

Also, in the event he may try for the west coast:

1. All forts being expanded to maximum
2. AC being shifted around, trained and on max searches and max range

hindsights always 20/20

if he has only a few carriers and he only wants midway, so be it, but if hes trying to lure me and i take the bait, i could lose all 3 PacFlt carriers and escorts. so, i will err on the side of caution and not commit the fleet to the defense of Midway

Also, the Yorktown arrives in less than 5 days with at least 4 destroyers. they will be sent out to Pearl as soon as they arrive.

Update:

Hiryu has been spotted. The unknown contact SE of Midway is DD Tanikaze.

Also, ive lost 13 ships(about half at Midway) to his 42, and hes also lost 3 tankers, about a dozen or more APs and AKs, about half a dozen DDs, and his most severe losses:

multiple things happening now. brunos target is confirmed as Midway, as he brought a transport group inshore, which ran into my sole remaining PT, sinking her. and again, strangley, they did not hit a single one of the 300+ mines. strange.

as we know, 1 of the forces near Midway is deffinitely a carrier force, and includes Hiryu. Today recon reported 3 carriers in this force, 2 fleet carriers and a light carrier.

1 ship in the "Unknown" group is reported as DD Wakatake:

a few bombs have been dropped here and there, scoring a few hits

also, SigInt reveals that the 31st AA Bn and the 107th base force, are loaded, and getting underway for Attu. this makes the situation a bit more interesting

but what makes it even more interesting, is that a carrier was reported, near Amboina

now we know thatair spotting is notoriously off. hell DD Tanikaze is being reported as a heavy cruiser!! those jap pilots must be getting too much sake!!! [:D]

now, if the force near amboina includes a carrier, what does this mean?

obviously it could mean that bruno has split up KB. but what IJN player would do that? unless he expects me to think thats the last thing hed do of course

hed expect me to expect him to keep KB intact, and even strengthen it, so as not to repeat the historical mistakes the Imperial Navy made at Coral Sea and Midway

so perhaps this is what hes done. but without further intel, theres just no way to know. Until the Midway operation there had been no sign or word of the KB, so what has it been up to all that time? where has it been? has it indeed been split? or strengthened? again, no way to know.

Hindsight is always 20/20...

The carrier groups have been reorganized

3 Tfs, Enterprise under Halsey, Lexington under Sherman, and Saratoga under Spruance. They have a mix of cruisers and modern destroyers along with the old destroyers, nearly 20 ships in each force. ill include an ASW force as well, and a surface force if i can.

im contemplating going up against what *APPEARS* VERY slightly, to be a somehwat reduced KB. though he still has the Zero bonus, and i dont have the flak upgrades. if i can get fighters into midway, and have them help cover the carriers, i might have a chance, albeit a slight chance. though im far from decided on taking him on, i am indeed contemplating it...

after weighing in all the factors; the lack of good intel, lack of spotting, lack of flak upgrades, the fact i could be wrong, the zero bonus, etc, i have decided not to engage KB, as the odds would be maybe 30-40% at BEST in my favor. for right now its too big a risk.

However, if he goes for Hawaii next, i will commit the carriers and anything else that floats...

With KB far away from a save port and your carriers close within limping reach to Pearl Harbor with superior damage controll, I would definitively engage KB near the Hawaii islands. The odds in this case are not too bad and having KB out of action early in the war makes things a hell of a lot easier. On the other hand, you saw what happened in our game............

indeed, i would not engage KB without at least Yorktown ideally, it always helps to have an extra TF, AND an extra flight deck to absorb hits. plus id have a bunch more fighters from Pearl giving CAP support, along with every available bomber group.

Bruno has begun landing at Midway, hes taking losses, and the first wave of 900 men was wiped out.

but theres more troop ships coming in. theres not that many supplies on Midway. ive transferred in 7 P40Bs to help since theres a bit of support for them

If it looks as though Midway will fall, ill get as many planes and troops out as i can and fly em to johnston

3 days till Yorktown arrives in Frisco

oh, ive also transferred fighters and bombers to menado and kendari to attack the IJN landing ops at Amboina, and ive transferred mroe fighters into Cebu, and amboina itself

Watch out! Midway is an atoll. The Japanese troops will do a shock attack as soon as they land. There may not be an opportunity to get your planes out if he takes the base in the first round. I had that at Wake once, when I did not see the invasion fleet coming. Lost quite some planes and good men there......

also, Bruno has shown his hand, and it appears that he has at LEAST 4 big carriers with him, judging from the amount of planes he used to hit Midway with. had a feeling this might happen. So now i deffinitely wont be engaging KB at Midway. i shall wait for him to come fight me on my terms, at Hawaii, if that indeed is his intention, and it appears that bruino is going for the central pacific thrust. or he may just be trying to wipe out PacFlt's carriers.
