Has anbody ever taken Moscow by Winter 41?
Is it possible?
I'm so new to AT, that by winter 4

I've been in games where I would have taken Moscow by Winter but my opponent conceded. I think it's possible but only if the Germans are winning by a blowout.

Somehow my favourite strategy as germans in this scenario is to put my secret main schwerpunkt on the flanks and only pretend that i want to take moscow immediately. Moscow is imho too tough, the distance to moscow is very far, they get the 4 sibirian units and around moscow the russian player will usually decide to defend imho. So i find Moscow too risky. The chance is just too high that you are at the gates of moscow when the soviets get their winter offensive. If you want Moscow in 41 this probably means that you do not so well in the south and north. The south is economically very tempting, the north is important to keep the finns alive and in case you are successful there it opens up the possibility to capture murmansk. Do you have an AAR of one of those games where you captured moscow in 41? Or maybe we should try a game. I am curious to see from the russian side how such a german strat works since i somehow never try to capture moscow in 41 but rather focus on the flanks in 41. In this scenario and also in the GPW scenario.

I had a small airforce and no artillery ?
I had about 40 fighters which has been no match (9 of them overrunned at Leningrad). That´s why i did not use them
in the early game. Would have been stupid to engage the german fighter fleet.
Artillery...would love to have a lot in every game, but i had to set priorities and as you know i lost in most turns my complete production
or more so there was no ressources left for such production !
 
I needed lot´s of rifle as backbone, several flak to make air attacks harder for you and some AT guns to stop your tanks.
Most losses i took due to bad terrain, lack of experience (the most important) and sometimes artillery fire. Not to forget
the concentric bonus you had mostly. My mistake was not to add some horse or trucks for better mobility in the units which had
guns inside.
 
The engineers (mobile) had their reason. I was very flexible with and destroyed many bridges. Unfortunately
this didn´t slow down you as much as expected.
 
However, i´ll not give up yet. Even the situation is really bad for me i´ll continue the fight.

If you guys are using 1.11 you would note a HUGE difference with blown bridges slowing down the Germans. No more cheesy tactics of painting the opposite bank with a recon unit, moving a truck bound engineer from 8 hexes away, paving roads if necessary as you go, and then building a bridge over a river for 20 AP. That one simple change of movement costs being assessed at the rate prior to the road/bridge being built helps restore some reality to the game.

We continue to attack on all fronts. Since next turn Seille gets his winter bonus i don't want to reveal screenshots. The russians suffered acceptable losses this turn too. ~60k russian vs. 10k german losses.

We captured maikop. Before army group don and antonescu there seem to be no enemy troops anymore, before AG south is only a russian hq, and before AG north are a few infantry units guarding the road to murmansk.
Only in front of ag center is still a russian front with some intact units. And somewhere must be Seilles Siberians.

I second that. seille has to have the same advantages as you or the results will be tainted.

Some counterattacks in the center with good results. Some german high XP tanks down
and a engineer unit crippled.

But the situation in the north and south remains VERY critical.
In the center i expect a deep defense.

Bad news for you guy´s. I already upgraded my game to 1.11.
I found a bug in a Check last weekend and Vic sent me a fixed .exe.
Had to use it to test if the bug was fixed. And it was. But now i run 1.11.
Could make thing sa bit harder for me, but not too much.

That just means that your victory will be all the sweeter...[;)]

Well you can simply install a 2nd copy of AT and only patch it up to v 1.10 .

Decide to try to push forward despite the winter. To my surprise it seems to even work. This turn also this nice subs attack murmansk convoys event occured and the russians lose 50% of the murmansk bonus.

Only really well prepared attacks are successful though. An attack from 3 sides in a forest north of Leningrad failed for example.

Overall a bad turn for the germans though. Higher losses than the russians. Ag center voluntarily retreats.

In my turn i finally had the winter arrived.
Using my bonus i attacked a heavy forrest hex between Leningrad and Murmansk with good success
Another attack on the germans between Maikop and Baku (picture). This was hard enough
to do serious damage to the defenders.
In the center Boron evaded my attacks again. This way he can definitely reduce his losses a lot.
And i´m sure he can easily recapture the lost terrain when the summer comes.

totals for my turn. Unfortunately i was not able to set more than these two attacks.

Only limited fighting this turn. AG Center and AG Antonescu make tactical withdrawals, AG Don conquers lots of empty snow wastes and AG North and South did the limited fighting.

Only some smaller counterattacks in the north and south.
The retreat of Borons forces makes it difficult to attack.
They run faster away than my forces can follow [:D]......little provocation

I hate the winter ^^. But Seille did spread his forces too much. In the south that leads to several medium catastrophes for the soviets. For example we overrun a soviet artillery stack without losses.

Damn, i hoped my defenders would stop you before reaching the bridge and the artillery.
Next time i´ll destroy it

And i had to spread my forces for multiple reasons.

1. protecting north south connection
2. Baku
3. Murmansk

Especially Murmansk and Baku i should not lose to keep the production balance.
