But no, there is no point to have more than one sub in a hex, the reason it looks like that is because they are still moving to their respective patrol areas...

what size has Thursday Island and the base to the NW? Can he put Army bombers there? A sweep with a couple of Val equipped CVEs or even KB could also kill two dozen subs in a week! [:D]

He could come around with the KB I suppose, but that seems like somewhat of an overkill when it comes to ASW... and besides, the entire reason Im putting the subs there is to prevent him from sending the KB in the first place. Would you want to send your carriers into sub-infested waters like that?

it depends... would I need KB to take on one of your invasions or CV TFs it would be a mess to send them through such sub infested waters (if I would even know that there are so many subs). If I would know that there are so many subs and I would have no other purpose for KB at the moment I would send it out with 300 Vals and Kates on ASW. With exp 80 there would be no subs left after a couple of days. But on the other hand using so many aircraft on ASW smells too gamey anyway for me so perhaps I would just send couple of CVEs with a good escort and two ASW TFs following it. Would be a Japanese hunter killer group then.

Well, if the KB comes knocking with all its aircraft on ASW, then I'll know where they are at least, and I will put all my naval bombers on nav search, hoping for a couple of lucky hits.

Well, I think Ive located the KB... Im not sure whether this is good or bad though. On the plus side, I know where he is, and Ive got lots of subs in the area. On the minus side, he is right where I dont want him to be.

Well PH...good luck on this game. Do you have any insight into HOW these insane gains were completed? I didn't know the Japanese had the man power to project itself all over the map like this. I want to know so I can try to do this to my opponent! He has been a real pain in the backside in China! lol

Well, from our conversation so far Ive gathered that he conquered all of China and all of India by 1942. There was some huge battle off Diamond Harbor where all the ships of the Royal Navy perished when they tried to counterattack the invasion there (BBs against CVs...well, you do the math). They battled back and forth over Karachi, but the brits managed to hold there. In early 1943, the jap player "got bored" and attacked the USSR. Presumably with overwhelming odds, all the Chinese army units and all the Kwangtung army units I suppose. The US player tried some sort of counterattack in the Pacific and lost all his carriers save one.

You'll find a pretty good description in Jumper's AAR "Rising Sun or Sunset". Primary lesson: good planning is no substitute for raw luck.[;)]

Lots of action today.

I noticed yesterday that he had flown in bombers to Port Moresby and Gilli Gilli, so I targeted these bases to persuade him to stop doing things like that. I suspected he might try to ambush me at Port Moresby so I sent all my P38s along as escorts. Turns out it was a good thing I did that because he had indeed set a trap there. My losses were staggering, where I lost 3-1 P38s to Nicks and Tojos. But my fighters managed to protect my bombers, making the losses neglectable to the heavies. I believe he learnt his lesson because today those fields are empty again.

The fighter losses are quite absurd. Im outnumbering him 2-1 in fighters and I lose 3-1.

Over at Rossel Island I sent in a fast transport to dump a seebee unit on the dot-base. Unfortunately my TF commander seems to have decided to remain in the target hex for now. That cost me a BB and a CL. One thing worth noting is just how devastating my flak is. Today he lost something like 20 Betties. To a TF consisting of only a handful of ships. Also note the worthless hit-rate he achieved. Probably some very low experienced pilots in those bombers.

Im not really sure what to do here. I dont want to commit too heavily here when the KB is hovering right off Thursday Island. at the same time, I cant just do nothing. Ive got a carrier TF with 4 CVLs a dozen hexes south of Russell, and a transport ship with supplies that I thought Id take to the base. Im going to see how many troops my fast transport TF manages to unload tomorrow and then decide what to do here.

As for the sub-war... Lets just say I think Castor would have had a stroke if hed been the allied commander here. The entire KB is sitting in one hex with ALL its Vals and Kates on ASW duty. At least that is what it looks like when you check the operations report. I lost three subs today, all to bomb-hits. And Im not talking about three hits, Im talking about three sunk subs.

He also lucked out completely, my subs took torpedo shots on a BB and a CVL, and in both cases the torps failed to detonate. At the end of the day, I get two DDs for three subs lost. Not a great trade-off, but we will remain here a few days to see what the KB does. As soon as it vacates these waters I will invade Thursday Island.

Today the KB moved one hex, and he seems intent on continuing to use the KB as some sort of magic asw weapon.

Anyway, we have moved past the ASW-debacle.

Right now I am in the opening stages of NATALIE.

I have taken Thursday Island with a combination of paratroopers and marines. Now I am in the process of building the base up. It is a slow and tedious work since I can only fly personell and supplies in. Any convoy is out of the question since the KB is still loitering in the area.

Meanwhile, the diversion at Russel Island is working. He is focusing lots of naval and army assets there. In the meantime I am building up Thursday Island to make it impossible for him to launch a counterinvasion there. Right now I have approx 250 AVs at Thursday, and I am flying in more every day. Ive also got 50 corsairs based there to give the base at least a rudimentary defence against air attack.

As soon as the KB diverts from the area, I will launch phase two of NATALIE. In about 3 weeks I should be ready for phase 3. That one should come as a nasty surprise for him.

The operation is moving on. Im sending small detachments of paratroopers to undefended bases to keep him guessing on my intentions. He is still loitering with the KB off Port Moresby, and that will soon start to become dangerous for him. A near miss from a torpedo today, and lots of bombers in Australia. Tomorrow I will send out all my level bombers on naval attack, and all my P38s on escort to see if I can hit him.
