Is it possible to save a PBEM game in midturn and come back to it at a later time, or do you have to finish the move in one sitting?

The `secure' folder does add an element of confusion, since even if you are playing a secure game, the turns are still saved in the kharkov/save email/play or send, folders.

BTW JudgeDredd, did you have a chance to check out my AAR where I played as Soviets against Axis normal AI? Decisive victory for Soviets!
No...but I'll be reading it before I take on the nasty fascists! [:D]

As some one mentioned above, since the Russians got their asses handed to them in this battle historically, they should be the more difficult side to win with.

After seeing how thoroughly the AI has trounced some who have taken a shot at the Russians I may have to give it whirl myself soon.

After reading about the historical battle, it sounds like it was a lot harder for the Germans. The Russian assault was brutal and rolled the Germans back far enough to get the Soviets overextended. I am amazed the Germans pulled off a victory in the real battle. Sheer tactics.

sabre1, I don't remember the exact place names of where the Germans were pushed back to. I'll have to give Glantz's Kharkov book another read to relearn it all. I do remember that the Germans contested the Russians all the way and didn't actually run backwards, though they probably felt like running.

I'm reading Glantz's book now. The Germans held the north pincer, it never broke out or threatened Kharkov. THe south pincer ran a little wild.

In my first game as Axis I, unknowingly did exactly what the Germans did historically. I used the two reserve panzer divisions to hold the line in the north, letting the south blow out while refusing the southern flank of Kharkov. The Russians drove almost to Dneprepetrosvk before the First Panzer Army ate their lunch.

I'm taking a stab at the Russians now. Here is a screenshot of my progress with them on turn 6. I'm in Kharkov fighting heavily over it with the German garrison. I took both Krasnodar and the town west of it, releaseing the three alert division reinforcements and the Germans who were pocketed there just retook Krasnodar last turn while a tank bn that died at Kharkov reentered rebuilt at Krasnodar and just reopened the pocket.
I have surrounded most of the German 51st corps, but most of my 38th Army is pinned down surrounded it. I also pushed too much of teh 38th Army north into teh Kharkov salient so I am way too thin down south where they will be needed to keep the Ist Panzer Army from cutting off my southern pincer.

My game has been far , far more bloody that the Judge's game he is doing the AAR on. I think both players have ben a bit too timid in that game. I'll post the "losses" scren shot in the next frame. Here is the "progress" screenshot:

Here is a look at the losses on both sides by the end of 5 turns, very, very bloody. The hard thing for the Russians is that most German dead get "ressurected" while the Russian dead are gone for good. Have a look:

Definitely a significant reduction of red in those screenies. Any updates on your battle Hans? I suppose you've mopped up and moved on to other bloody challenges by now.

Yea, the AI counterattacks very aggressively in this game engine. I am pleased to see it come up, attack all out and then fall back to try and build a decent line with what is left of it's ops points. In older games it would just go all out to attack with no regard for the viability of it's own defensive line once the ttack was done.

A few times it was so aggressive it had to leave tank battalions as sacrificial lambs as all other units had the remaining operational points to fall back, but the tanks did not. I duely slaughtered them only to have them get ressurected and ruin my day at Krasnodar.

I haven't been back to this one since thhturn I posted screenshots of. Been busy with UV PBEM games and Beta testing Battles from the Bulge. While I took the central hex of Kharkov and Krasnodar, I have already lost Krasnodar and I am not too sure I can hold Kharkov. The 1st Panzer Army is already tearing holes in my line to the south so I am not too optomistic about surviving this battle with a victory in tact. Good fight tho!

Hans, what game is UV?

Is Battles of the Bulge another Decisive Battles game?

UV = Uncommon Valour - a fantastic game!

Battles from the Bulge = a game in development: The next game in the Airborne Assault series.

I just checked it out. Sounds like my type of game. I will have to include Uncommon Valor in a future order.

I will buy uncommon valor again (actually it may be in the loft)...I find WitP just too big. I want to love it, but I barely get into a turn before I think "wth am I doing!"
