Huh - didn't understand your question?

Perhaps I should add that the defender being France in the first example and Austria-Hungary in the second. Obviously 4 of their full strength corps is less than the shown
But does that mean more then 88 (first) or 72 (second) are being used in the firepower calculation? I don't know as I just attack and really don't care about the details but either only 88 of the 132 and 72 of the 96 are being used or all 132/96 are. Is there a way of knowing, ie, are the details of the firepower calculation known? It might conceivably being doing this correctly [:)] with confusing labeling (or it could be using over-stacked troops as you have said [:(]).

Yes. Firepower equals strength points time readiness divided by 7 (more or less). So say 4 French Corps (my first example) with 88 strengthpoints have a firepower of roughly 114 when at full readiness.
Overstack combat is supposed to use only the 4 corps with best firepower. This change was made as overstacking could happen deliberate or as a result of withdrawal from other combats.

With regards to "confusing labeling" there is now way to be sure for certain barring looking into the save file (i.e. by Frank) as combat rolls is being done randomly and extreme results can happen how unlikely they may be.
Firepower is the number of "to hit rolls" you make against a percentage chance of inflicting a hit. The manual is very good in explaining how combat is performed.
So say 114 in French firepower should inflict on average some 25 % but in this example that would equal some 44 % with 50 hits.
Again this is a mathematical possible result with "wrong labelling" but only Frank can tell [8D]

Ah, yes; the gaming it crowd. But even so, it just makes no sense for overstacked units from taking part in the battle - they were likely to have been fighting at the same time as the second combat or, even if prior, would be disorganized (more or less since these are 2 month turns) and basically in the way of those in the fight. I could see it even being some sort of negative modifier. I'm just glad he didn't just eliminate the overstacked units like so many games have done.
Well, one thing you can take to the bank; if it isn't working correctly, Frank will fix it based on his history of superb dedication evident in this forum.

Overstacked units gets excessive losses from barrages which is quite realistic I suppose so in general its only a real advantage in key hexes or bottlenecks in breakthroughs.
