Gentlemen, you need to start looking at subtitled films otherwise you are missing out on some good recent WWII movies.

For a realistic depiction of the historical situation, you can't go past "Downfall", arguably the most realistic presentation of Hitler.  There was also last year a good Dutch movie (name escapes me, something like Black book) about the Dutch resistance.  Also the movie "The Counterfeiters" dealt with a rarely covered WWII subject.

This is the movie you were referring to?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055502/

I've heard of it - but have never seen it...

ORIGINAL: rtrapasso

i saw a movie years ago about the Battle of Midway made from the Japanese point of view which i THINK might have been "Storm Over the Pacific" (also known by various other names including "I Bombed Pearl Harbor", Taiheiyo no arashi (Japan), and "The Storm of the Pacific"... unfortunately, i can't find it on Netflix... has anyone seen this?

It was made in 1960, but some of the footage was incorporated in the 1976 film "Midway".

Yes, that's the one, i think (i don't recall the actual title i saw, but it's the only movie i can find that fits what i remember.)

i saw it years ago on TV, watching it with my Dad (a WW2 veteran)... i still remember a couple of scenes rather vividly, including the B-26
TORPEDO attack on the IJN (my Dad was rather astonished at this, not knowing such a event took place)... a couple of other gripping scenes as well, iirc... i'd really like to see it again as it's been over 40 years.

How about the movie Blue Max, WWI flying.

I met the author of that book a few years ago. He ran a small collectables shop in St. Augustine. I was buying some antique maps, and he had a couple of WW1 air-to-air prints, and stack of "The Blue Max" books. I picked on up and remarked to my wife, "This was a pretty good movie..." and this old guy pipes up, "Yeah, but the book is better." I said, "Yeah, it usually is." To which he replied, "I should know, I wrote it..." I bought a copy of the book, which he signed. I also got map Quebec from 1780 (I've enjoyed collecting a few antique maps).

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I still think The Cruel Sea was one of the best.

 I agree[:)]

633 Squadron was a very good movie from the point of view of great footage of Mosquitos. The plot was so so, the flight scenes are great. That is why I bought it.

I also liked Sailor of the King based on the C S Forester novel Brown on Resolution. It was not a great film but it was well done I thought.

Non-WWII naval film - Captain Horatio Hornblower starring Gregory Peck. (of course the 3 books whose plots were condensed to make the film are better)

A&E did a fairly recent re-do of Horatio Hornblower.  Three movies as I recall, about 5 of the books a bit condensed.  But pretty good.  I don't think I ever saw Peck's version of Hornblower.

It is worth seeing. I thought it was well done. I don't use Netflix, but I bet it could be found there

Hornblower, by either A&E or the original movie by Gregory Peck - is
wonderful.
The books are C.S.Forrester - enough said. I'm sure you guys also liked Patrick O'Brien? I know I loved 'Master & Commander/Far Side of the World' too.

When you have time, read C.S.Forrester's 'Age of Fighting Sail' too - it's his scholarly work on the Naval War of 1812.

I recommand also Cross of Iron with James Coburn and Maximilian Schell. (War on the East Front in 1943) The number II was not as good.

"Cross of Iron" is absolutely superb. The sequel ("Breakthrough") tops my list of worst sequels ever made. It's an anti-Vietnam war movie set in 1944 France. Just like Kelly's Heroes, lacking only the humor, realism(!), good script, and acting.

For non-WWII how about "All's Quiet on the Western Front"? I think both the original black-and-white and colored remake are excellent.

Ace's High with Malcolm McDowell is almost as good as The Blue Max for a WWI air movie.

"Cross of Iron" is a great movie, but the barn scene should send shivers up any man's spine.[X(]

I always liked The Dawn Patrol for WWI flying, although the Blue Max is very good as well.
