I was 10 or 11 years old and we were visiting Fort Ticonderoga in New York State. At the time (late 60's) they had 2 functioning Revolultionary War era mortars. They had a red crew and a blue crew. The gentleman explaining the operation of the mortars said,
"See that barrel way out there?"
We all nodded yes. He then said,
"Whenever either one of the crews hits the barrel we get a keg of beer. It's been a long dry summer."[:D]
I will remember my visit to Fort Ticonderoga for the rest of my life.[:)]

Over in the AE Museum there are many questions asked, but there are two responses that are routinely given by a couple of the front personnel for that project. Those answers are "What's AE?" and "There's no AE", and when some poor sap takes then up on that response they are highly insulted that someone may just have believed them. I do think this qualifies for inclusion in this thread.

i was also under the impression that is was a diversion for the midway op.
That is what I remember thinking but I wasn't sure if that was the real reason or not. I suppose it could have been a combination of the two. On the one hand the Aleutian campaign could have been to extend the scouting perimeter but perhaps it would also make a good reason for the US carriers to come out of harbor for the KB to intercept them. the carriers used in the alutian op were junyo and hiyo. kb was at midway.
Duh! I know that but I was thinking the point of the Aleutians was to lure the US carriers north so that KB could intercept them at Midway. However, I think Spence's explanation above sounds about right.
