Port Moresby in WITP was always a trap for either side; in 1942, even if the Allies held it, it was pretty easy for the Empire to occupy Lae and bomb it round the clock. At least until P-38s, etc. It's a trap for Japan, because getting transports there is very difficult with Allied Medium bombers and P-38s, and impossible if the allies occupy Milne Bay.
In AE, it's probably still a sump for the Empire, given the lack of a trail from Buna. I think you still have to take it though, if for no other reason than to deny it to the Allies. At least if you get kicked out, you can withdraw the survivors to Buna and get them out that way.
