Not quite...when the water freezes up in the Northwest Territories, roads are made on the ice (including sea ice) and long haul truckers haul loads on those.
Well, "NW territories" refers to what part? What are the target locations? The few shows I saw mostly featured trips to a test drilling site, given - often using that iced up river.
In fact, I highly respect people doing that job, it can be quite risky. It was just the lurid presentation that put me over the edge:
The same 3D-animations were interspersed repeatedly to support their take that the ice could break every second .... during the month where the ice's thickness reaches its peak [8|]. I tend to believe that it's relatively safe if you keep a good balance between speed and pressure/weight applied per let's say meter, no?
Yeah, they definitely do get a bit melodramatic with things. The biggest issue up there is actually the storms...they're absolutely vicious and they can blow in FAST.
There are ice roads in Alaska (the Dalton Highway and Prudhoe Bay), but the biggest networks are in NWT. Most of them drive to and from the diamond mines, ice-locked research barges and natural gas fields. Yellowknife is sort of the 'central hub' of the whole network, and Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk further on.

Sadly, that really is about the only show still worth watching on that channel anymore. I used to be a History Channel fanatic, but I haven't really watched it now (save for Lock & Load) in at least 2 years.

There is a famous equation that gives the estimated possibility of life on other planets based upon star type, planets expected, and other variables. Sheldon (Jim Parsons) on Big Bang Theory went through the equation quickly in one episode.
That's all fine and good, but as far as aliens go, one has to ask, "Why?" Even if some alien species was far advanced of humans, and they could somehow manipulate space/time to travel faster than light or close to it, why would they come here?
There are billions of stars like ours in our galaxy. There is nothing peculiar about the Solar system that a space faring race would see from a distance to make them want to explore here.
True, if they could intercept our radio waves, which travel almost as fast as light, they would see a bug fat mess here on Earth, and maybe they would come, but we have only been sending out radio waves for a little less than one hundred years. That means the aliens would have to be within one hundred light years to know we are not just a rock around an average star.
We know that there are no similar radio wave coming from anything that close to us, so the galaxy is basically blind to our civilization. If that is so, why would any alien race farther away have bothered to come here? Note that the radius would only have been about fifty light years back in the 1950's and the Area 51 tale.
While it is likely there is life out there, there is little reason to believe that any of it is any more advanced than us, and that any of it would even bother to check out our star system for intelligent life.

I love Lock n Load with R Lee Ermey.I like it 100 times better than Weaponology, and of course it's very nice have R lee Ermey and his watermelons back.
My heart was crushed when Mail Call went off the air.I'm going to buy all the seasons on DVD.That show was badass.

That's easy because there is a first experience for everything. So, we could easily be some aliens first experience with another life form. Just like for us if/when/ever we get into the stars an ecounter our first species less advanced than us. In essense because we are here and they are there. I just do not nor will ever believe that our planet and its inhabitants are the only lifeform in the entire universe. Nor do I believe we are the most advanced all you have to do is look at our history for basically 9800 years of supposedly the human race. How'd we get so smart in such a short time of the socalled universal time frame without some assistance? Mathematically I'd say we're all still just larvae in the realm of universal life and time.

The reason I believe in Aliens is because of this computer technology world we are living in now. Compared to the centuries just to discover light and engine propulsion and even indoor toilets I just cannot believe that humankind is so intelligent and advanced in just the last 60 years.
