They were fortified, isn't the defence multiplier 4 times for fortified? That may explain your disastruous results.

I think i must have clicked on a unit that was in poor condition and added it to the battle by mistake even maybe an air unit,after sending the turn to my opponent i reopened the turn and played it again twice and both times the result was a resounding success for the Reds which has made me belive i did something i didnt intend in the original turn such is war[:@]
