Operations in the So. Pacific will be down to G'canal and then maybe over to Luganville. Right now, taking the bases of northern Australia are priority #1. Since he sent QE to Port Moresby and sent CAs to the area, I think he is trying to rush in reinforcements. If so, I'll land at Milne Bay and base Ms. Nell/Betty there. Right now I have the Gds Mixed Bde prepped and in route to Truk and will use the 144 Rgt after Rabaul. If need be, either the 4th or 21st Division would be used after Darwin. I have all the Tank Rgt from Manchuria going to Darwin. There are not many places that you can do some open field running with them, but this is one.

Juan - I took a quick look at Allied CV reinforcements for '42. YIKES!! He can have 10 CVs by the end of the year with 4 Essex Class amongst them. If this is the Enhanced BB mod, I don't know what the CV Enhanced will look like. With this knowledge, I will have to remain aggressive and will use KB to seek and destroy now as I cannot wait too long.

Unfortunately, the 2 x Haguna Class BC SC TF was suppose to stay in the middle of both CVE and CVL TF had headed back to Babeldoab, but were ordered back and should be there by morning.

Note - An Air HQ that was prepping for Koepang are aboard transports 6 hexes north of Babeldoab. This turn, I ordered it to unload as I have 36 Nells resting. I wonder if they can can get enough of it ashore to allow torpedo use??

Dec 23 & 24: - The first action of the war involving major warships.

ASW/Subs:
23rd - A Dutch sub is not successful at hitting the SC TF watching over the invasion of Kuching.
24th - Dutch sub KXV misses the SC TF at Manado. S-40 and Sealion miss the SC TF around Manado. Permit gets one direct DC hit at Kuching.

Carriers:
2 CVLs & 2 CVEs are operating off Manado.
KB still patrolling south of Rabaul.

Malaya:
23rd - 19 Sonia followed by 15 Lily hit a retreating Indian Bde south of Taiping. Alor Star is finally captured. So is Victoria Point.
24th - Sonia and Lily continue to beat up on the retreating Indian Bde.

Borneo:
23rd - 26 B-17Ds from Singapore come in at 9k over Kuching and get a single hit on an xAP. In the afternoon, 21 B-17Ds return and don't hit anything. [:)] Kuching is captured with 4:1 odds. [:)]
24th - 20(1) B-17s come over Kuching again, but don't hit anything.

China:
23rd - Hong Kong is hit by 50 bombers. They target the Fortress unit and leave the infantry units alone. [:(] Thankfully, 24 Nell/Betty hit the infantry in the next wave. Finally, the rest of the LBA come in and hit the LCUs. A deliberate attack on Hong Kong comes off at 1:2.

Philippines:
23rd - 8(1) Zeros sweep Manila vs. 24(1) P-40E Warhawks. The second sweep of 8(1)Zeros come in against 1(1) P-26 & 13(1) P-40E Warhawks. I don't like 1:1 losses, thought. [8|]

Notes:
Minus the successful attack by S-40 on CVL Zuiho, this first battle of major warship would have been a draw. However, she will need yard time for repairs. So, I give the Allies a tactical win.

Lesson learned was to give SC TF and CV TF a very small patrol zone rather than keep them stationary for multiple turns. Need to minimize subs getting too many shots. I need to add ASW TF to the mix (I have SubChasers at Babeldoab).

Transports are pulled back from Manado until captured. TB & DBs will hits ground units at Manado while a small bombardment TF will lend support. The two low disrupted LCUs will Shock Attack.

Searaven is at Ternate, but fails to hit the SC TF (CL, 6DD) covering the invasion.
Sealion misses CS Chiyoda as she heads east from Manado area to replenish at Babeldoab.
Sturgeon is missed at Sangi (3 hexes NNE of Manado) by 4 DDs that are part of a SC TF protecting the transports pulled back from Manado.
O16 finds an xAK that is part of the Sangkawang invasion force 6 hexes due south of Saigon. One torpedo is enough to sink her.
S-41 gets a torpedo hit on CLAA Oi at Kuching. Minor damage and she will remain with her SC TF covering the Sangkawang invasion.
26th -
Swordfish sinks an xAK off Camrahn Bay (she was part of a re-supply Cargo TF from Saigon to Samah).
Perch get three direct hits on her by DDs at Kuching! [&o] While Shark gets only near misses by the same TF of DDs.

Carriers:
Mini-KB (2 CVEs & CVL) operate off Manado. New orders will be to head back to Babeldoab to replenish and take on new pilots and planes.
KB is still south of Rabaul. Using one of my new favorite features of AE, the Kates & Vals will have secondary mission of ground support on Rabaul the next turn cycle.
CVL Zuiho's 18 Zero and 12 B5N2 Kates will unload at Babeldoab while she heads back to Japan for complete repairs. Some upgrade/downgrade of TBs will take place to use up Jean TBs and then place B5N1 Kates within Mini-KB to free up the B5N2s for KB.

26th - The same group of LBA hit Hong Kong. The second consecutive Shock Attack on Hong Kong yields only 1:1 odds. Troops are ordered to rest for next turn cycle.

Philippines:
25th - Landings happen at Sairgoa (off the NE corner of Mindanao). This is to provide a way point for short legged LBA between Babeldoab and Naga (Luzon). Plus, it will be used when the eventual invasion of Mindanao takes place. Lingayen is captured (no enemy troops present).
Zeros will escort LBs over Clark next cycle while a full Daitai will sweep Manila. Some construction LCUs and small BF will finish unloading at Naga (part of my link to the SRA and beyond).

Celebes/SRA (east):
25th - 2 CA do a bombardment run on Manado. Shock Attack at Manado yields 17:1 odds and enemy forces surrendering, thankfully. [;)]
26th - 5 PBY-4 Catalina from Kendari buzz the transports off of Ternate, twice.
Manado will be a busy base in the days/weeks ahead. 36 Nell and 27 Zero have moved in. Their range is 14 hexes (max for Zeros with drop tanks). The supplies from the invasion transports will move back in and finish unloading. TKs and SubChasers are leaving Babeldoab along with a Transport TF with a Naval HQ and Shipping Engineer. The Namlea invasion TF is loaded, but needs to await the replenishment of Mini-KB (should arrive by end of next cycle)

New Guinea/Solomons Area:
25th - 17 CD guns at Rabaul open up on my transports and support ships. 3 PBs and 2 xAKLs are sunk by the end of the 26th. Shortland captured.
26th - Landings at Finschhafen
Rabaul will be deliberately attack after both KBs DB/TBs hit the troops and a BB TF hits them. Lae invasion TF should arrive also during next cycle.

Current I have exactly ZERO TF running between Hakodate and Ominato. What are other using for transports (numbers and class type)??

I have 1 x TF (capacity of 47k) running to and from Sakhalin.

I have multiple TF with over 270,000 capacity running to and from Port Arthur. Is there a magic number or combination of transports to make this efficient??

I have 300 Engineers and 12 Engineer Vehicles at Fusan expanding the port. Most of the Engineer units from Manchuria that eventually will be bought out are down there. I plan to move Korea HQ here next turn. Any ideas on how to get the AI to move more Resources here?? It is a short trip across this part of Sea of Japan (less possibility of subs, too.

Any other Japanese Economic Ministers have this mastered and can send me the info, link the exact post in a thread that has this, or get to me by carrier pigeon, it would be appreciated. [&o]

Dec 29 & 30: I had a good two day cycle.

SS KXIV sinks a xAK at Manado, but is sunk in the process as two direct DC bring her to the surface where a Torpedo Boat takes target practice on her.
30th -
SS KXVI is hit twice in succeeding attacks by the DDs within my Amphib TF. Instead of keeping a separate TF, I added the DDs and CL to the Amphib TF.

I finally had decent ASW forces in base hex which turns into a sub killing ground.

Carriers:
KB - Provided cover for Lae and Rabaul invasions and will retreat to just north of Rabaul while supplies finish unloading and to ensure the 2nd Air HQ that is now leaving Truk arrives safely.
Mini-KB has replenished at Babeldoab, but even with 45k in supplies, the Claudes do not upgrade to Zeros. Thus, she will head to within 9 hexes of Takao and she if that helps, or worse case situation they will fly in and convert. She is needed back to cover the other planned invasions in SRA.

Malaya:
29th - Taiping falls under 60:1 odds.

Most of the troops at Alor Star and Singora are placed in Strategic Mode while LRCAP of Zeros and Oscars fly over Taiping. In the New Year, the Japanese army should be able to quickly move south to Singapore.

I had sent this TF from Formosa to try to get rid of these pest. Despite the rain, 18(2) Zero fly over Manila and see 19(4) Warhawks. Then, 10(0) Zero fly over Clark and take out half the 4(2) Warhawks. 3:1 losses start to make me happy. [8D] Finally, Lily and Sally hit the AF at Clark with no opposition.
30th - Manila sees another 15(0) Zeros in the morning and 2(1) Warhawks rise up. Meanwhile, at Clark 6(0) Zeros face 1(1) Warhawk. We are now up to 4:1 losses in fighters over two days. [:)] The Lily and Sally do their thing.

Troops are at San Fernando and will march to Clark.

Borneo:
29th - Singkawang falls with 168:1 odds.

Since I landed here with an Air HQ, the Daitai of Nell and Betty will be well armed with a Chutai of Oscars and Zeros as escorts.

29th - 92 Kates from KB hit the troops at Rabaul. Rabaul is captured with 4:1 odds. Lae is captured with 39:1 odds.

Notes:
Troops are loaded in Formosa that are part of the the Lautem invasion TF, while 90th Inf Rgt is loading in Fusan, Korea for Koepang (Another Air HQ is headed here). The plan is to land at Namlea, Kendari, Lautem, Koepang, and Makassar. This should close off the southern tip of Java to shipping.

Mini-KB has moved close enough to Takao for Claudes with drop tanks to land. They are upgraded to Zeros. 1 Chutai of B5N2 Kates downgrade to B5N1s.
KB is now north of Rabaul. I spent time adjusting training for Val and Kate pilots. Before I learned to place highly experienced pilots from LBA in the Home Island to Reserve, I had filled out the pilots. KB is still short 16 Kates (with 16 in pool)and 39 Val (only 2 in pool).

Malaya:

8(0) Zeros escort in 20(1) Nell to Singapore from Sangkawang and after getting through the 10(0) Buffalo, miss hitting the CM and 2 AM at the base.
This is followed up by 19(0) Betty that sink 2 AMC.

Multiple LCUs arrived at taiping via rail and after changing back to combat mode will head south. Due to the situation in Sangkawang, transport planes have moved to Saigon from Formosa. One was moved to Kota Bharu and will fly in 3rd Air Division HQ to Kuching (command radius 4) as 22 Air Flotilla HQ is at Sangkawang (command radius 1). This was a mistake, but not a fatal one.

In the Afternoon, 14 B-17Ds brush past 3 Oscar and destroy 3 Nell/Betty on the AF at Sangkawang.

I only have 100 engineers at Sangkawang. Two more construction engineers are loading at Formosa for here. Kuching is being reinforced with another BF. I need to secure this flank as troops start to load for Billiton at Saham. They will join others at Camrahn bay and Saigon. The AF at Sangkawang is slightly damaged (runway -7 & service - 21). With a possible nighttime bombardment by Force Z, planes were sent over to Kuching and Miri. I still have 27 damaged Nell/Betty left. Zeros will fly LRCAP over Sangkawang and Oscar the same, but only at night since they cannot do anything to slow down those B-17s.

Celebes/SRA (east):

The Namlea invasion TF should arrive by end of next turn cycle.

New Guinea/ Solomons Area:

2nd Air HQ should arrive at Rabaul.

Notes:
With Force Z over near Sangkawang, I should be able to capture Namlea without interference (but a SC TF is shadowing the transports, just in case.

In the AM air phase, 18(0) B-17s hit the AF at Singkawang with only 5(0) Zero on CAP. 8 B-17s are damaged with AF damage at 2 airbase and 5 runway. At Balikpapan, 20(0) Zero escort in 16 Nell from Manado and brush aside 2(1) B-339D to sink xAP Van Diemen & CM Krakatau while CL Caledon, Torpedo hits 1.
3rd -
9 Blenhein, Hudsons, and 139WH-3 face 4 Oscar over Singkawang. While there are no losses, the Nates do enough to allow only a singel runway hit. 5(0) Zeros are no match for 15(0) B-17s over Sangkawang. They damage 12 of them. I come back for more targets at Balikpapan. The 20(0)Zeros escort in 18(0) Nell and sink 2 more xAPs and put another torpedo in CL Caledon.

I had KB still at Truk while some system damage was being taken care of pierside. Mini-KB was still in Takao. Looking back, I would have still had Mini-KB operating in this area and may have not done well against both the British and 2 American CVs. My BBs took little major damage, but enough to have them head back for short repair yard time in Japan.
While Japan has the initiative, I fell I'm reacting more to him than him to me. KB was ordered to head east to come support further invasions while Mini-KB will support the Billiton invasion.

I have to take stronger steps to deal with these annoyances.

I couldn't cover both escape routes from Soerabaja. He will make good his escape to India. Billiton is AF 1(5) now and in 4 more days will become a 2. Meanwhile, the Air HQ at Kuching is loaded up with unloaded supplies from Billiton invasion and will head to Billiton along with a strong SC TF (2BB, 2CA, 2CL, 6DD) that will be stationed there. Since his Buffalos seem to have moved here from Singapore, the extra Zeros from Mini-KB will join other plus some Oscar Ic to sweep Batavia.
On Malaya, troops have arrived and moved out from Kuala Lumpur. Oscras are on CAP. The AF will be built up and as soon as a level 3, Lily/Sally will move in and start to hammer Singapore.
