The 3rd Army also had some very good luck at Dinant.

West Front
Battle of Longwy

The 5th Army made its move into Luxembourg and turned south as planned. The battle of Longwy was an important success. The breakthrough battle which resulted was, however, a failure. The 2 corps that were still available for that task was not enough to defeat the French in Cote de Meuse.

East Front

There was another battle at Tannenburg-this time with the whole German 8th Army. The result was a defeat for Russia.

The results of that battle was a significant hit on Russian moral. It will take many more battles like this to make Russia surrender.

East Front

There were small battles in Thorn and Posen in which the German reserve corps were driven out. Both cities are under siege-and are in danger of falling.

The Turkish 3rd Army launched a major attack into Kars. It nearly succeeded, but was broken off before suffering major losses. There will be time to try again in September.

There was some action in Serbia which ended with a small A/H victory which left the 5th Army in a better position to advance on Belgrade.

At this time, France has suffered from a rebellion in Algeria. It will have to station some units there for a while to calm things down.

There were multiple smaller battle in the east, west and in the Serbian theater.

The A/H Army did quite well against the Serbs and Russians enabling the A/H forces to continue the offensive.

It is becoming clear the the Russians have opted for a major invasion of Germany. The small Russian forces facing the A/H Army will be pressed hard.

The battle of Zamosce was a cheap victory for A/H.

1 September 1914

Before getting into the next round of operations, perhaps it would be helpful to have this periods beginning front lines followed by the next month front lines.

The planned advance by the German Army did not meet with complete success. Some important battles were won, but a misplaced breakthrough attempt and the loss of Metz has made it clear that Paris will not be reach this campaign.

The advance has fallen far short of its goals. The appearance of the BEF right in front of the 1st Army led to a very brutal battle. Although German forces triumph in the end, it drew off reserves for the breakthrough battle, thus dooming that effort.

Even with the significant setbacks, France is far from having a solid front and the advance will be able to continue into the autumn. Of course, in this view from the C.P. vantage point not all French/T.E. forces are visible-far from it.

Battle of Douai

This was a quite large and unexpected battle. Although it was counted as a belgian Army, there were some British divisions involved.

This is the starting line up for the German 1st Army.

Battle of Metz

The French launched a power attack into Metz. This was expected, but the reserve corp I sent in to reinforce an element of the 5th Army was not enough.

The siege of Maubeuge

The siege began well with the fortress being reduce after the initial bombardment. However, there was a garrison left to deal with.
I chose to send in a veteran corp to attack the fort. This is risky-even with a veteran unit.

Siege of Maubeuge

The results of the assault were favorable, but somewhat costly.
