Extra! Japs Invade Dutch East Indies!
				Posted: Wed Aug 11, 2010 5:31 pm
				by Connfire
From the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial page, August 8, 1922:

The Japanese appetite for conquest seems to know no bounds. Not content with enslaving our Filipino friends, the yellow menace has now set its site upon the Dutch territories in the East Indies. That's just bully! Just as German aggression led to a Grand Alliance of nations to vanquish it, so it would seem that the Japanese are following suit. We await the Dutch declaration of war, and hope that our other Allies in the last great struggle realize this aggression must be stopped, and join our noble cause.

From the London Daily Telegraph's editorial page, August 8, 1922:

We are still trying to ascertain what is happening in the Far East. Here is what is known. Our former Allies, the Japanese, apparently landed troops in the remote Talaud Island group, only a hundred miles or so from the Philippines where they are so regrettable in a war with another of our valued Allies, the United States of America. Talaud is part of the Dutch East Indies. A state of emergency has been declared in Holland, and their small army and navy are beginning to mobilize. They have requested a Special Session before the League of Nations, which will likely happen tomorrow.

Europe is nervous. Neither France nor Italy seems willing to join this fight. And why should they? Holland sat out the last Great War, and even allowed the Boche Germans to use their ports to circumvent our blockade!

All eyes are on our own Prime Minister, Sir David Lloyd George. With the deep fissures in his own Parliamentary coalition growing weaker by the day, how he handles this crisis may well determine his own future, of his government, and indeed the nation's. While stating he is "gravely concerned at this unsettling escalation of this regrettable war in the Pacific", there has been a flurry of activity between our diplomats and the Japanese embassy, both here and in Geneva. All we can do is hold our breaths and wait, and see what tomorrow's League of Nations session brings.

				 Extra! War Averted!

From the London Daily Telegraph's editorial page, August 9, 1922:

With bated breath, we watched the proceedings at the League of Nations special session in Geneva today. In dramatic fashion, the Dutch demanded an explanation of the Talaud Islands invasion by the Japanese. The red-faced Dutch representative threatened war, and asked other countries to do what his country failed to do in the last Great War, which was to join our cause.

Then something completely unforseen took place. The Japanese representatives admitted that the invasion of the Talaud Islands was an unfortunate mistake. They stated that a navigational failure in one of its invasion fleets lead it to believe it was actually landing troops on a beach in Mindanao, a large island in the Philippines where there is currently fighting. While not apologizing for the act, the Japanese agreed to send ships to the islands, and remove every Japanese soldier there within a week.

We at the Telegraph admit we are not intimately familiar with the ways of the Orient, and are quite befuddled by this turn of events. The reaction of the Dutch representative at the League was quite delicious, and the uproar which followed almost drowned out his yelling something about reparations. The Dutch are free to seek whatever damages they feel they are entitled – since they’re not willing to go to war over this issue, perhaps by 1940 all claims will be settled.

Was the Japanese action some sort of test? Or was it really in fact, a mistake? If the Japanese did intend to invade the Dutch East Indies, one would think Java or Borneo would be much more attractive targets then an isolated island group on the edge of its Empire.

What is known is Prime Minister David Lloyd George, and his government, have won a reprieve from the scandals which threatened to drag him down. Apparently our government, and the Japanese were in deep consultations all last night. When asked why he put in such an effort, the PM simply replied – “If I can prevent another Great War from breaking out, then that is what I shall do”.

From the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial page, August 9, 1922:

The treachery of our so-called friends at the League of Nations was enough to make any patriotic American’s blood boil. It reminds us that George Washington was truly correct in warning us against entangling alliances. Only four short years ago we sent our men to fight and die in Europe, in a war that was supposed to end all wars. Now, even when a fellow European nation is attacked by our enemey, all of them, even the very nation that was attacked, turn their backs on us. The wisdom of our refusal to join the League of Nations was never so apparent. The only people America can count on in this world is fellow Americans. Let’s get the job done. Sign up for the Army, or the Navy. It’s a long road to Tokyo.

This was an obvious USN defeat, with 2 CAs, a CL, and 7 DDs lost. Only consolation is BB Mutsu will probably have to put into the yards for her torpedo damage, and some of the BCs may need repair as well. I had been gradually changing commanders on USN ships - all the BBs, CAs, and CLs had new commanders. The only DDs with new commanders were in the ASW group which tangled with the IJN fleet at the very end. And they were the only ones to score a torpedo hit, and were the only one of the 3 USN TFs not to suffer any losses. Lesson learned. [;)]

Actually the main reason for both is that IJN ships were out of main caliber ammo... that's how dreadnoughts really get taken down - with 4-6 waves of ships hitting them all in the same turn...

The Greeks reply that they misplaced the recipie for Greek fire about 2,000 years ago. If anyone has seen the recipie for Greek fire, kindly return it to Athens, and the Greeks will gladly share the secrets with them.

The Greeks also ask if the USA, Japan, or anyone in the world, will please send as many troops and ships to the Aegean as possible, as their war with Turkey really hasn't been going well lately. The USA says it is too busy right now, Italy and France are considering pulling out of the Dardenelles, and once again UK Prime Minister David Lloyd George's government is on the verge of being dragged down.

PS - the Greek fire kidding aside, this is really happening in this time period, with a huge Greek defeat about to happen in the next game turn on the other side of the world. See
Greco-Turkish War (1919-1922), and the
Chanak Crisis on Wikipedia.

 From the Honolulu Star-Bulletin:
In what is becoming an all too familar site, another ship joined the growing Navy warship cemetery outside the shipping lanes leading to the Pearl Harbor approaches. The destroyer USS Ramsay, DD-124, severely damaged in last week's Battle of Johnson Island, completed her final mission, which was to bring her surviving crew back to a safe port. Unable to control her flooding for much longer, she was towed to the spot where the sunken minesweeper Tanager and destroyer tender Meville already lie, where she quietly foundered. Meanwhile, in Pearl Harbor itself, the gaping holes seen in drydocked destroyer USS Chew makes one wonder how she survived the battle at all. Water was still being pumped out of the hull at press time.

 Japanese ground losses:
 2058 casualties reported

These 11 DDs were among the Mediterranean Fleet transfers that trickled into Colombo over the past month. They were out of fuel and heading for Davao, which is the last port in the Phillipines still in US hands, when they unexpectedly encountered a transport group only 1 hex away from their destination.

With the fog of war, the situation at this point is a bit unclear - I'm witnessing ships sinking and getting reports of others foundering, but they are not yet showing up in the "ships sunk" screen. It is also possible that other ships later sank, or will sink, that I'm not yet aware of. The USN DDs fired about 75% of their torpedoes, scoring at least 5 hits. What is known, however, is some of the bodies washing ashore indicate that at least some of the ships were carrying Southern Area Command and 6th Fleet headquarters staffs.
