After looking at the bigger pictures, I changed my point of view. They are way better than I though first.
The game seems to have the "right" look. Waiting for release...

Not bad.  I'm not going to worry so much if something looks cartoony, what I want is decent game-play though.  Unfortunately I'll have to wait until I read the rule-set first to make up my mind on that :P

The hex borders look like they could be a little more anti-aliased, but it's not the end of the world for me.

I like the art, it was one of the first things I noticed.  To please those with different tastes in art, perhaps the ability to allow people to mod the art files, like HPS.  But WtP has that old board game look to it, which is one of the reasons I took a look at it more closely.  But, it is the game play that will matter the most, and if it feels right from an operation stand point, that is what is important.

I am always on the look out for the "perfect" operational game, and right now (for me), War in the Pacific:AE is the best I have seen, but is not really geared toward land combat, but rather sea and air, but the land model works well enough for what the game is trying to do, a simulation of a single largest theater of WW II, and it does it very well.  I love the game, and I have always been an East Front war gamer, not the Pacific, but WitP:AE is really a great game.

I am with you there. I look foreward to whatever else Victor makes in the future.

Congrats, finally a turn-based strat. game that actually looks good!

Most other games of this kind makes your eyes bleed, and looks like they were made 20 years ago . I hope this is a new trend, so developers in the future will prioritize graphics higher. Think of all the hours the gamer will spend in front of the screen with a good game,- looks does matter!

Don't listen to all the old farts that says otherwise and almost seems proud of playing a really ugly wargame,- like it makes THEM being more hardcore

Anyway, can't wait to go deep into "Fall Gelb".

Cheers,

Well, the art is so close in map to Jison superb job for HPS Pzc/MC and unit art or IronX in SB series.

Both parts do a great art section in the game [&o]

I agree that the artwork for the game is outstanding. The map, counters and unit information panels are first-class, making it one of the most visually appealing PC wargames I have seen in ages.

I've been following this site for years now and this is my first post. I felt compelled to write just how amazing I think the game is. Fanatstic graphics and gameplay. I'm in wargaming heaven!

Although its way to ealry to say this, and I want to give this plenty of game time, all I can think of now is the next game in the series - a Russian Front game! I would love to see a Barbarossa scenario.

Guys, these are not cartoons. Art is certainly subjective, but these were hand drawn by Nicolas Eskubi, one of the best wargame/boardgame artists around who we commissioned for this task. Here are some of his credits:

MMP Staff Artist.
Winner CSR Awards for Best Wargame Graphics:
Fire in the Sky (2005)
A Victory Lost (2006)
Battle Above the Clouds (2009)

I'll say it again, the art looks fantastic...gives the game a great look. Thanks for the close up screenshot!

I like it too. Esp since some games who do use photos don't seem to grasp the concept of the correct image to the unit it's representing in game.

what do the numbers under the divisional markings represent? Never played Advanced Tactics and cant seem to find a cut and dry explanation in the manual. Thanks!

Most modern board wargames have art like the ones you see in this game.

I think the graphics look fine. I concur w/ jomni, very modern board game look. These are quite an improvement over Advanced Tactics, a game that I found EXTREMELY addictive in spite of it's rudimentary appearance.
The gaming world is littered with games possessing flashy graphics and crappy playability. Kudos to Matrix and Vic for staying on strategy and focusing on great strategy games.

Vic already answered the question in the other thread.

These are meant to be basically like the kind of art you see on a great board wargame - ASL or something similar.

Yes, a beautiful job!

I'm a boardgamer and I'm not a pcgame fun but this game seems a very good one.
At the moment I'm reading the manual...

I love the artwork except for the faces of the soldiers staring out right at me - they seem kind of blank somehow and a bit off-putting.  Otherwise I'm hooked.  Great game and very immersive.

Well, with the full game only can say that the units artwork is superb, i like the vehicles images and even the soldiers faces are now less [:@] hehehe.

A little point about art, in map i think that hexes with defensive works are to light, need be more eeee visible and same for heavy forest [;)]

LOL! I agree, I remember as a kid and a SPI subcriber looking at some of the paper maps and marveling about the details. The counters bring back alot of memories.

The artwork is good, but I can't stop looking at those counters. Sexy them!
