(Is this possible in real life ?)

ANOTHER THOUGHT: This ammo was not fired, but destroyed by the KAMI explosion ? But than the damage would be even greater I guess.

Happy new year!

1st a question: Were kamikazes worked on in newer versions ? Because they very rarely seem to miss. The historical hit rate was somthing about 15%. In game it seems more to be 60-80% depending on ship type....[X(] Well my version is old, so guess this was toned down already.


Well the Allies advance on all fronts.....

...the Jap navy decided to make a stand around Kushiro were the Yanks landed. They send night raider after night raider, but mostly penny packets. Luckily both Yamato (was hit by 4-5 bombs and 2 torps from air around Hollandia some months ago) and Musashi (was hit by 2 sub torps near Jap homelands) still seem to be out of action or the Jap wants to reserve them for the real "last stand" of the IJN. I just copied some of the fleet action combat reports below. In the North pacific the USN had all left over old BBs and only 3 older cruisers, therefore masses of DDs, CVEs and CVLs . Only 1 fleet carrier was assigned cause we figured we had at Etorufu and Parashumiro already quite good "unsinkable CVs". Now we have almost taken Hokaido completly.

The biggest landbattle there was vs. 1 Jap Div + 1 tank reg + quite a lot of arty and support at Sapporo, but the also had to bow down finally to our troops. The rest of the cities was more or less weakly defended. Maybe the Jap is now missing al the troops he send in useless invasions (ex. Canton, Hankow and 1 more city in China). We have a really HUGE and also experienced Chinese army now, which has taken with US + RAF help in the air and Indian armor help on the ground, every important place in China and the Jap sends 4 or 5 times 1 regiment to recapture named cities with some small amphib fleets. They could land every time but were of course thrown out also every time (which means the landed troops were destroyed, or in 1-2 cases just re-embarked and dissapeared). Not more than annoyance for our command.

Also the Jap made 2 more "bold" moves to re occupy Tillitjap at Java (the British/Indians + 1 US tank brigade took Java meanwhile) and supposedly Saumlaki or Dili/Lautem....I was wondering were these ships were heading and so gave order to all bombers not to attack anymore just to see what they will do. Well in the first case they landed at Java. And even threw out the 1 baseforce at the place, but worse he destroyed all planes there also [:(] Well my own fult of course, these were 3 Dutch units reactivated after we captured Tillitjap. I was able to for these 3 untis from about 10 Dutch fragments which arrive at these place. Well they are gone now (2 x B25, 1 x Hurricane). So in this case the JAP achived something. But the one regiment he sent has of course no chance to hold the place for more than a week (untill the Brits have gathered for counter attack). The ships from which the Jap landed dissapeared somehow. Maybe we find them and then of course we try to sink em. But maybe they were dissbanded in port and "teleported" to some other place ?? Let´s see.

The 2nd JAP landing attempt in 44 seemed to be directed at Timor or Saumlaki, but in this case all ships were sunk or damaged... so the convoi retired without landing his human freight.

Major annoyance still Kamikazes which claimed some more ships mostly transports but also some DEs ! They are quite acurate if they get through the CAP, so we will exchange some SBD or TB with fighters on carriers and use all the escort carriers we have. The Jap even uses quite new "FRANK" model fighters as Kamis. Also transport planes ! Well the Franks should serve him better as CAP I think. Still Betties that get through are dangerous also vs. warships.

See the Java/Borneo and Timor area here, our next target would be Makkasar I guess, we vould even chosse between the Aussies or British/Indians which can take the place as we have more than enough troops meanwhile from these nations - quite some regiments and divs are just resting in the rear (a bit unfair to the troops in combat, meh but the losses of both armies - we have to say - were not really heavy as their EXP is also quite good meanwhile add to this much support from the air and arty/HQs at the ground to make a big difference)...

We decide later if we take Balikpapan and Samrinda, both are only defended by weak garrisons says recon. The airfield was already targeted and our planes report only 30 planes left no fighters however,. We also tried some strat bombing out which was quite effective but the B29s were send from Malaya and to fly quite a long way. Together with the resistance of Jap fighters at Miri, the B29s are out of action due to damage and fatigue they received from these 2 flights. Well they have service rating 5 so no wonder they will fly not *that* much [8|]

We assemble forces on Hokaido right now of course.... so in this part is not much ground action, except that the IJN still does the one or other raid. As well they send Kamis to sink what appear to be smallies PT boats and mine craft from the USN. But I need to defend even the small craft cause when Yamato appears I hope to whittle her down with severall dozen of PT attacks before it reaches the real surface fleet or even the masses of landing craft and freighters unloading at Kushiro (we have now 600 naval support there, so it goes quite fast even if the harbour iat the maximum with only 5!).

Also landings at Manado (New Zealanders), Makassar (Aussies) and Den Passar (Brits) took place. The Amerikkans took some smallish islands also.

Well well, this "game" get´s a little boring now I have to admit. The AI has gone to sleep it seems, but this is still better than his suicide fleets he sends out from time to time.

I guess this might be still ok and explainable, as the JAP in reality used such "tactics". See Kamis, suicide boats as well the suicide sortie of the Yamato plus their companions. Just to name some examples....Even the Germans used in the final last months suicidal "tactics" of some sorts (like planes that ram heavy bombers or hit very important bridges). I am sure the Germans used this stuff only on a veryyy small scale. Their main hinderance were orders from Hitler, Göring, Himmler etc. anyway and they were doomed.

I can tell that the JAP sortied a "carrier fleet" with his (maybe last) new fleet carrier. How this raid went, I´ll post later together with the combat reports...also the JAP sortied YAMATO severall times.......

In CHINA: Well the advance was ordered to continue and we are now at CHINCHOW which should be in Manchuria I guess (?). There we encountered a kind of a hornets nest (severall divs, strong arty and even an armor division are among the garrison of this town!!). We suffer quite high bombardement losses there, the Chinese have the problem of not having much (if at all) heavy or even medium arty. Well they have some 105mm howitzers otherwise only mortars and 75mm guns. So they cannot respond to the fire from longer range and heavier guns on the other side. But still some Chinese troops have now reached an exp of 80 (!) which means they do not longer get a combat malus [;)] The Chinese als recaptured some city lying on a big river were the JAP landed with ca. 3/4 division strength (3 units). But this was of course hopeless to hold.- The USAAF in China has no also some B29s but they can rarely fly. So still the B24s and B25s are the best bombers in the arsenal. We also send there masses of P40s for ground attacks. The P47s and P38 are mostly not in the air also, as the Jap does not restist with fighters at all.
Well maybe I can send some fighters to Hokaido from China.

THE BRITISH recaptured TILLITJAP at Java. We also found the ship that landed the troops there, these were in the port. Most or all of them sunk by port bombing of all kinds of aircraft mostly Wellingtons.

The US took another more unimportant island called Eniwetok, as there are not really any targets in the area which are worth to capture, they prepare for a landing on Ponape (even we do not need it), just to give the troops over there something to do. These are not needed at other places anyway and our INTEL figured that the Marianas (means GUAM, TINIAN etc...) are quite heavily garrisoned by the enemy also possess large plane numbers. As we do not need these places (we have Hokaido!) we probably won´t go there like the Allies did in real live. Just mabye shortly before the end of the game to have some last big clashes and "fun" [:'(]

Theoreticaly we could have already invaded the JAP mainland (means HONSHU), but why hurry ? There are also some dangers: Kamis + the YAMATO. She made severall night sorties with 1 CA + DDs, but this TF managed only to sink some PT`s (ca. 12-13 or so altogether - our USN PTs did not hit anyhing btw.). Well they do not interfere with the major unloading ops at KUSHIRO. The shortest way to HONSHU main island would be from Hakodate to Ominato I guess. Ominato has not that strong troop numbers, the airfield is already bombed to ashes btw. The same will be the fields at Akita in 2-3 days.

We just started the air offensive cause ca. half of the heavies (which are only B24 and B17s - no B29 these are sitting in other places because they use up so much supplies and their pilots are not the best when they arrive) still need some training! I might post the units taking part there later...... There are only US troops btw. I found it a bit strange to have Indians etc. there. The Brits / Indians are just patiently waiting untill they get something to do. There is not enough transport and time to get them over to the north pacific anyway (would be a bit strange also in reality I think, cause the goverments of these nations would not allow this).....

Btw: If you wonder about the huge losses of the Jap bomber force.....these were not all shot down... they apear as destroyed in the combat report if flying as Kami and die (if hit something or not), but show up as OP losses in the air losses report. - just a reminder.

Meanwhile we got bored and also had build up enough force to make the jump to the JAP mainland we just used the shortest way means Ominato. Quite some big air battles occured also some mine and masses of coast arty hits (but mostly LCI/LSTs and the like). We also lost 5 CVEs in this operation and some smaller ships. Luckily BB North Carolina "absorbed" some KAMI hits it seems. These seem the only ships that really are survivable to Kamis. Or very small, fast and manouverable ships of course.´1 Div, 1 HQ, 1 Arty was the first wave - quite weak - but the garrison at Ominato was much weaker and was bombed for some days before.... I´ll post the reports and pic when back at home [:)]

Most action around Ominato and Balikpapan, we lost severall ships to Kamikaze as you can see below. The Kamis at Balikpapan came throgh cause 1 CVE with Hellcats was out of action by shell+torp hits by 1 Jap DD in a night action. So the CAP was halved. And the LR CAP did not show up (some P38s flying from Makassar)..

Ominato had only 1 base unit + fortress. So the natural target, we used fast action with a lot of small LCI+LST. So the unloading went fast. Of course all airfields and some troops in the nearby cities were hit in preperation also. Not much JAP CAP left there now. Mostly the enemy KAMIS + escorts fly from the TOKIO area now. The JAP was quite fast however in the reaction to our capture of Ominato, he railed in ca. 20000 men / 210 guns. Guess not enough to throw us out, but also we are now confined to Ominato by now. Until we bring enough stuff in to strike these forces back. Some pics to come later.-
