Great find! Definately not a AAA title, but pretty impressive. Lost my first battle.
I think I may have played an older version of this but it kept crashing so I lost interest.
Thanks Wodin!

I named all my ships - and cared about what happened to them.
ROFL! I semi-recently picked up a space-miniatures ruleset wherein they recommended naming each ship as they tended to last longer.

I'm just curious, how many people here have played Star Fleet Battles?
Oh man, I sound like a bot! [X(][:D]
I played SFB a lot in the 80s and even played two moderated campaign games - with about 8 players total. Since we had a moderator, we could tweak the production rules - and IIRC we could remove about 10% of the "cost" of the ships and add back in 20% ... in other words you could make changes to the ship designs but you had to stay within +/- 10% of a given published SSD which you used as a base line. Allowed lots of customization. I named all my ships - and cared about what happened to them. I think I was the Klingons in the first campaign and the Hydrans in the second. Both were enjoyable - but people tended to drop out when they lost their first big battle. I used a retrograd tactic for fleet engagements that no one managed to counter.
You mean the Kauffman Retrograde? It was hard to beat.

I recall playing Star Fleet:The War Begins on the C64 back in the day. The one you had to enter a bearing for firing torpedoes, so it certainly tested your bearing guesstimates. Fun stuff. [8D]

You're thinking of the ST Tactical Combat Simulator game from FASA. Which was very similar. In my opinion the rules to this one was better than SFC - more streamlined, including the damage system which was much more interesting. For being a faster playing game, it seemed to have more detail in the basics.
Heretical I know, but I'd probably agree. Very elegant system that reflected the TV/movie combat pretty well. That said, I played a lot more of this one than SFB as I was also playing the Star Trek RPG at the time, to which the combat game was a sort of stand-alone add on.

Yep..My kids and I started on Star Fleet Battles back when it all began. I still have all the original stuff around here somewhere. Along with Federation and Empire which we still play. A buddy of mine and I played F&E for 2 months this last summer having had it set up in my living room. He wants to do it again this winter. I also played Cosmic Balance..I probably have it around here somewhere too.
